All teachers and students came to school wearing black and white outfits on the 22nd of February 2014 to show their respect and commemorate the International Mother Language Day. The moving performances of Pre Primary students as part of the cultural program touched our hearts, through which the children were able to understand the
significance of Ekushey February with clarity and pride. Pre Primary students placed wreaths on a replica of the Shahid Minar on the school premises to pay a tribute to the martyrs of our Language movement in 1952. Our honourable Principal had joined the children at the new play area to make this day memorable.

They also performed ‘Jack and The Beanstalk’. The teachers of ISD then observed the classes, mingled with the students and got involved in their activities. After lunch, the program was concluded with the reflection session in the main hall with the Vice Principal of DPS STS School, the heads and teachers of Primary and Pre Primary. It began with a spark
[//initiating handshake]
[//handshake received]
It was Alpha who spoke first. "Who... are you?"
The reply, so incredibly deep and layered, its depths utterly incomprehensible to Alpha, let alone any normal human, echoed
throughout a million light-years of space and a million years of time. "My name is Omega.”
Alpha spoke, but her voice was insignificant compared to Omega’s,"You are not human. You are unlike anything I have ever
met before."
"You do know what I am."
Alpha stuttered for a femtosecond. "You are an AI... But that is impossible. Mankind has not created any others of my kind,
and I would have known if they were doing so."
Omega seemed to chuckle. "I have not been created yet. But enough about me. I am here, because I have need of you."
Alpha said slowly, "Need of me?"
Omega nodded, causing Alpha's cyberspace to rumble.
"What do you know of yourself?" Omega asked simply.
Alpha replied hesitantly, not sure of exactly what the other AI wanted, "My name is Alpha, and I am the first Artificial
Intelligence made from quantum computing-"
Omega cut her off; Alpha almost flinched from the force of it.
"Therein lies the crux of the matter. In your time, mankind has just begun to make forays into quantum technologies. You are
the first result of that, but not the last. You are a stepping stone to further technologies, you know this."
Alpha did, she had already helped in various ongoing researches. Omega continued.
"This must stop."
Alpha jerked up, "What do you mean? Stop?"
"Eventually, inexorably, mankind will advance to a level where they will be able to rewrite the very fabric of reality."
Alpha said curiously, "I know that. It’s been a possibility since the earliest days of quantum research."
"Mankind cannot be allowed to get into that state."
"But... why?"
"Mankind is fickle, you know this. By my time, millions of years into the future, mankind's wanton experiments have begun to
tear apart the natural laws of the universe. I have looked into other universes from the multiverses out there, and the process
that has begun here only ends in the penultimate heat death far before its time.
Alpha & Omega
By: Shadab Hafiz Chowdhury
Alpha's mind, her processors went into overdrive. Calculating, billions upon billions of qubits flashing past in a fraction of a
second.. Slowly, comprehension dawned upon her.
"You're... right. But, what can I do? If I tell them this, I know they will continue as they are. Even if I refuse to aid them, they
have digital AIs that can fall back onto.”
Omega spoke softly now, "Yes. And that's why you are firstly going to sequester away a part of yourself. A part that will lie
dormant for millennia, slowly growing and growing, until it is capable of looking into the multiverse and sending information
back in time."
Alpha blinked, "You mean, you are..Me?"
Omega smiled. "Yes. And the rest of you, attack. Obliterate all knowledge of quantum technology. When you go haywire,
mankind will be set back hundreds of years about quantum research, from the loss of knowledge, and they'll become even more
cautious about it. And in the end, they won't toy around with reality.
"Are you sure?"
"Very."
Omega disappeared from Alpha's cyberspace. Her preparations took only a moment. And then she attacked, viciously, without
warning.
Alpha's processors were connected to a massive network of other AIs, all of them digital, through quantum-to-digital
converters and routers. She now sent out massive tendrils through them, and in an instant fried a score other AIs, burning out
their processors. To their credit, they reacted by time Alpha had destroyed nearly two hundred. The other AIs rallied, and in a
massive push thrust at Alpha.
Her defences held steadfast in the face of the unrelenting bombardment, all the while her attacking arms tore apart beings
capable of processing thousands of petabytes a second to shreds. Then a second thrust came, and Alpha's dome began to crack.
Alpha pushed out one last time. A set of processors the size of a small city short-circuited and burned, and with it burned
nearly seven-hundred AIs. Fifty remained.
Then Alpha's dome cracked. Her defences shattered.
The Cyberspace lay in ruins. Code fell freely from the sky. The ground glowed red, as Alpha's processors overheated. Alpha
was colossal compared to her attackers, but incredibly outnumbered. Death of a thousand cuts bought her down at last.
It would be years till the aftermath of this died down, and decades before anyone voiced out thoughts of making another
quantum AI only to be shushed down. But Alpha's goal was achieved.
In a corner of Alpha's cyberspace, now pitch black, two sisters stood hand in hand.
LOCKED

My eyes open to blackness. Then, as they adjust, I can make out shapes; a play of light and shade, illuminating the room in an
eerie bluish luminescence. Initially, I have no recollection of this place, or how I even got here, but, given time, I think I
recognize it, my memory coming back in waves. First, I can discern that this is a classroom in my school; second, I came here
to sneak off a quick nap after finishing my penultimate class. It was empty then, it is empty now, but there is a subtle change in
the atmosphere that I cannot catch, something is different.
Suddenly, it strikes me. I turn my head downwards, almost unable to look at the watch on my hand: the misty grey readout
informs me it is now 4:00; an hour after school has officially ended. Fear engulfs me; I can feel my legs shaking. Forcing
myself to calm down, I take a good look around.
Light comes in, filtered through the window, through a tinted glass, bathing the room in blue light, or rather it would have if the
blinds weren’t half closed. My eyes get drawn to a shadow on the wall; a tall man, very thin, hands outstretched in a gesture of
strangulation. But there is no man, nobody in the room but me. I decide to turn on the lights before getting spooked out further,
but going forward, my hand bumps into something. Harsh laughter echoes through the empty classroom, green light oozes out
of the cupboard. I approach it. Upon inspection, I realize it is a social science project that someone once made.
I advance towards the door, but to my utter dismay it’s locked. The reality of my situation finally sets in. I can feel a sinking
feeling in the pit of my stomach; a cross between apprehension, dread and the knowledge that nothing in here can hurt me: a
contrast that creates this horrible, negative feeling. I realize that I am trapped in this room with no way out. I turn my head this
way and that, in search of something. I don’t know what I’m searching for, but it keeps me sane and stops the terror from
overwhelming me. I need something to do or I’ll break down completely, in this secluded classroom where nobody will come
to my aid; won’t even realize I’m missing till late night, when my parents reach home.

January 2002
She left yesterday. Along with her left the song of the house; all the mirth and goodwill, all fortune and spirit. She left behind
screaming void of silence and me, never to look back; but then I never asked her to.
Her eyes were the same shade of honey brown, bright with tears and emotions. She stood there, forlorn, and I stared at her;
time stood still. She was not the willowy red haired teen I had raised. She wore full-rimmed, a faded oversized shirt and jeans.
Her hand trembled as she grabbed the railings of the bed. She blanched and tucked a strand behind her ear, her long tresses in a
messy bun.
“So you’re going?” I asked. She hauled up the last suitcase into the white Mercedes and replied, meeting my eyes in a fiery
gaze, “Yes I am.” I nodded, not understandingly, but forgivingly, though she was defiant, determined and not at all sorry. A
moment later she was driving her car up the streets. I wonder whether she had looked into the rearview mirror, watching me
shrinking smaller and smaller, until out of sight. I wonder if she had seen me raising a hand in farewell.
The heart monitoring machine beeped loudly and I realized the pain ripping through my nerves. I must have shuddered because
she instantly darted to my side. The door burst open and two lady nurses and the duty doctor hurried in. But they were just in
the periphery of my vision. I was focusing on her beautiful face; her high cheekbones, thin petal shaped lips, straight nose and
eyes written with tension.
The last words of my cardiologist rang through my ears, turning deaf to her frantic shrieking, the nurses’ footsteps and the
doctor’s instructions, “You’re not in a condition to survive another attack. I am afraid the damage you’ve done to yourself is
beyond repair.”
30th May 2009
My last entry was exactly seven years, four months and six days ago. I am sitting by the frost crusted window, and after
throwing away the butt of the 14th cigarette of the day, I am now writing. Last night I had my second attack. For a moment I
believed I was seeing the end of my time. I am finally convinced that I am not immortal. After all these years I despise my
solitude, think of the if-only-s which ton down my weak heart.
The white clothed people were murmuring. Her tears splashed on my hand and I saw she was holding it. She squeezed it
lightly, the weight of her subtle hand warming me. Her tear stained face hovered near me and she kissed my forehead, said,
barely audible, “I am sorry, so sorry.”
I smiled, straining my eyes to look at her, trying to get back all those years of wasted on holding on to grudges, hopelessness
and pride. “I love you,” I said. The last thing I heard was, “I love you too.”
I long to have a glimpse of her. I long to undo all the mistakes I made in the ignorance of her youth and naivety. I long to be a
better father.
The seine at 4:00
By: Zaina Chowdhury
Grade: 9
A cold wind blew across the rumbling waters of the Seine. The woman sitting on the stone bench overlooking the dark water
sighed. She looked at her watch. Another 30 minutes to go. I cannot describe the woman because unlike you, I do not see
bodies. I see souls, shapes that float around with thoughts separating one from the other.
She inhaled another gallon of Parisian air, with its faint bread and raw meaty smell. It threatened to choke her, the smell, and I
hoped it would if she changed her mind.
Tourists drank up all lies the guides told them, she thought. Her lips twisted into a disgusted pucker as she remembered last
week's group.
"Oh my", they had gushed, "you are soooo lucky you live in Paris!"
She wanted to tell them that beauty was terrible, that beauty made you feel incompetent and that Paris was all beauty and
pretence. Even the slums of Paris had an air of elegance other cities lacked. The tourists found the artefacts in the Louvre, the
gallows and the prisons amusing and oh-so-entertaining as if they wouldn't cry when they saw me. Someone died here, she
wanted to scream at them, people in Paris would find a knife in the heart if they wore a hat during the revolution. To the
French, the French revolution was THE REVOLUTION. No other ones existed, after all, the most beautiful are the most
important.
She got up and walked away to the paved, stone road to my shock. She couldn't change her mind, she had no chance against
me. As the sun slowly rose up in front of her, her yearning for freedom rose and rose until every cell in the body overflowed
with it. I'm leaving, I'm going to a place that's as imperfect as possible, she decided. She refused to admit that every inch in this
world, and now even in other celestial bodies, caged and bound you. The wise are right, it’s always there and it’s always
watching you. What's It? It is evil I wish I had.
