There is an explosion of scientific ad-

vancement in our country, not only

with new science centres like this

one, but alsowith SouthAfrica being

the host of the Square Kilometre Ar-

ray (SKA) which is the worlds largest and

most sensitive radio telescope ever built.

These are the words of the Minister of Sci-

ence and Technology, Derek Hanekom, who

officially opened theNelsonMandelaBaySci-

ence & Technology Centre in Uitenhage last

Friday.

We live in a time where technology is tak-

ing the country to greater heights as we see

more of these explosions where South Afri-

cans will put South Africa and the African

continent on the map. Not for the wrong rea-

sons, but for the right things, for our achieve-

ments.

Weve got the talent and the ability. Sci-

ence centres like this one help us unlock tal-

ent and abilities. Science centres are all

about stimulating an interest and a fascina-

tion for science and technology.

This science centre in Uitenhage is one of

the best examples of partnerships of all the

science centres that we have in our country.

There is no science centre that I know of that

has received somuch support from amunici-

pality.

It is also driven by a real vision through

the wonderful partnership from Volkswagen

South Africa.

Science centres are about thinking be-

yond. Imagine where we could be and then

work towards achieving our imagination.

Our wildest imagination could come true if

we channel our energy and work towards

achieving it.

Talking about wildest imagination, the

Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will allow sci-

entists to peer deeper into the universe than

ever before, shedding light on some of the uni-

verses greatest mysteries. The majority of

the SKAwill be built in Africa, with the high-

est concentration of receivers in theNorthern

Cape, about 80 km from Carnarvon.

Weve begun with the construction of

these dishes and already have 7 completed

and have started with the next phase of 64

dishes.

Whenwe look at the far away stars and gal-

axies we are looking backwards in time as it

is the result of what happened a billion years

ago. This SKAwill allow scientists to get very

close to the beginning of time, to what hap-

pened 14 billion years ago.

) The 3 800m NelsonMandela Bay Science

&TechnologyCentre is housed in the restored

Old Railway Sheds in Upper Drostdy Street,

which is a heritage site in Uitenhage.

Fihla said that business as usual is over as

delivery is drastically improved to the resi-

dents of Nelson Mandela Bay.

the organisational structure of the Nelson

Mandela BayMunicipality and appoint Exec-

an institution that used to be known for in-

stilling business confidence, exceptional eco-

nomic growth, as well as international and

Effective public participation remains

key to ensure that participatory democracy

is realised and, as a case in point,wewill soon

interact with key stakeholders regarding the

outreach plan for the integrated development

plan, budget process and some of the institu-

tions by-laws.

as it is important to provide a platform for the

Die Primre Skool Vrit het die afgelope

paar maande meer as een keer onder vandal-

isme deurgeloop, volgens Ben Sfers, die

skool se adjunkhoof.

Sfers het Sondag op die toneel ges die

brand,wat in die skool se oukunslokaal begin

het, is omstreeks 10:00 by die brandweer

aangemeld.

Die lokaal word nie meer as n klaskamer

aangewend nie, maar wel as n pakkamer,

het Sfers verduidelik.

Nuuskierige kinderswat die skade aandie

klaskamers kom bekyk het, is deur van die

personeel by die afgebrande kunslokaal

weggewys. Dit is nog onduidelik wie vir die

skade gaan betaal. Kupido Baron, munisi-

pale woordvoerder, het ges die brandweer-

dienste is kort n 11:00 ontbied en die brand

is teen 12:10 geblus.

Geen versoek om verdere ondersoek na

die oorsaak van die brand in te stel is aan

die brandweer gerig nie, het Baron ges.

Ren het verlede naweek verligting gebring

nadat die brandweer en veral lede van die

Rocklands Buurtwag verwoed die afgelope

paar weke gespook het om veldbrande in die

St. Albans en Rocklands areas te stuit.

n Inwoner van die Elandsriviervallei, Beb

Young, het ges sy en haar manManie, is die

brandweer en buurtwag ewig dankbaar vir

hulle hardewerk ombrande in die omgewing

te blus.

Dit is verskriklik omplase te sien afbrand

en ek raak skoon op my senuwees as ek rook

ruik. Ons waardeer wat die buurtwagmanne

doen want dit is op hulle eie onkoste wat hul

ander se eiendom probeer red teen die ver-

woestende brande.

Volgens Gary Fletcher van die Rocklands

Buurtwag het hulle reeds duisende rande se

brandstof uitgery n waag die manne hulle

lewens om die brande te blus.

Van die ouens het beserings opgedoen.

Hier is ook baie pofadders wat vir die vuur

vlug, so jy moet mooi kyk waar jy hardloop,

het Fletcher ges.

Die brandweer help, maar hulle voertuie

gee baie probleme met waterpompe wat

breek of voertuie is nie geskik om in die veld

te ry nie.

Volgens Fletcher het hy twee weke gelede

ses minderjarige seuns op heterdaad betrap

waar hulle met takke die vuur probeer ver-

sprei.

Ek het die seuns na die polisie geneem,

maar hulle is weer vrygelaat.

Die buurtwag doen n beroep op eienaars

en inwoners wat op plase of kleinhoewe bly

om die areas om hulle eiendomme skoon te

hou. Dit verhoed dat huise en store nie deur

veldbrande vernietig word nie.

Hoewel die DA die aankondiging ver-

welkom het dat die Nelson Mandelabaai-

metropool se beplande metropolisie weer op

die kaarte is, het die party voorbehoude.

Gustav Rautenbach, DA-hoofsweep in die

metro, het ges die party was nog altyd ten

gunstevan nmetropolisiediens.Maarhyhet

ges dit blyk nie dat diemetropolisie volhou-

baar is nie, omdat die metro nie eens geld

vir gewone dienslewering het nie en dus nie

n metropolisiediens kan bekostig nie. Dit

kan tot R700miljoen beloop, het Rautenbach

ges.

Destydse planne om n metropolisie in die

Nelson Mandelabaai tot stand te bring, is in

2010 opsy gestoot.
