Match backgroundBeşiktaş JK return to the UEFA Champions League after a six-season absence with a trip to Portugal to take on SLBenfica.

• It is the first time the sides have faced each other on the European stage.

Match background Benfica• They also met Turkish opposition in last season's group stage, losing 2-1 at Galatasaray AŞ and winning by thesame score at home.

• The Portugese side won three of their five home games in last season's competition, losing 2-1 against Club Atléticode Madrid on matchday six. They were knocked out by FC Bayern München in the quarter-finals ( 0-1 away, 2-2home).

• Benfica were 3-1 aggregate winners (2-0 home, 1-1 away) against a Trabzonspor AŞ side coached by Şenol Güneş,now in charge of Beşiktaş, in the 2011/12 third qualifying round.

• Galatasaray's 2-0 win in Lisbon in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage was Benfica's only blemish in an otherwisefaultless home record against Turkish opponents. They have won all other such fixtures, including a 3-1 victoryagainst Fenerbahçe SK in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League semi-finals to progress to the final where they lost 2-1 toChelsea FC.

• The Portuguese side's overall record against Turkish clubs is W5 D2 L4; at home it is W5 D0 L1.

Beşiktaş• Back in the UEFA Champons League for the first time since 2009/10, the Turkish Super Lig champions are hoping tonegotiate the group stage hurdle for the first time at the sixth attempt.

• They have lost all their previous matchday one fixtures in the UEFA Champions League. Seven years ago they werebeaten 1-0 by Manchester United FC at home in their first game but won by the same scoreline at Old Trafford. TheTurkish team nevertheless finished bottom of Group B with four points, losing all their home games.

• Beşiktaş met Portuguese opponents last season in the UEFA Europa League group stage. They drew 1-1 withSporting Clube de Portugal at home on matchday two before losing 3-1 in Lisbon.

• They have won twice in Portugal: 2-0 at SC Braga in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League round of 32 and 3-1 againstVitória SC in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage. Their record in nine games against Portuguese clubs is W2 D2 L5(W2 D1 L2 away).

Coach and player links• Ricardo Quaresma started his career with Sporting, scoring eight goals in 59 Portuguese Liga appearances beforeleaving for FC Barcelona in 2003. He was at FC Porto from 2004 to 2008 and again from 2013 to 2015, when hesigned for Beşiktaş.

• While at Club Atlético de Madrid, Eduardo Salvio scored three goals over two legs against Beşiktaş in the 2011/12UEFA Europa League round of 16.

• Born in Alverca do Ribatejo, in the Lisbon district, Rui Vitória spent the majority of his playing career as a midfielderwith clubs from the Portuguese capital's metropolitan area.

• Always plied his trade in the lower divisions and was a mainstay at Vilafranquense for nine seasons. After hangingup his boots at 32 in the middle of 2002/03, he began his coaching career immediately at the club, whilesimultaneously working as a PE teacher.

• His first association with Benfica came two seasons later, as he led the Eagles' Under-19 setup for two years, aperiod which began his steady rise in Portuguese football. The first step was taken at Fátima in 2006, where his debutseason was marked by promotion to the second division followed by immediate relegation, a journey repeated in thenext two campaigns.

• His good work led him to Paços de Ferreira in the top division. The first season ended with a seventh-place finish inthe Liga and defeat by Benfica in the 2010/11 League Cup final. Sacked three games into the following season butonly took a week to find a new employer, in the shape of Guimarães.

• In four seasons at the helm of the Minho outfit, he made his name by building competitive sides with few resources,as well as detecting and developing young talents. His highlight was victory over Benfica in the 2012/13 PortugueseCup final, only the second trophy in the club's history. On 15 June 2015, he was announced as Benfica's new coachon a three-year contract, and won the Liga and League Cup in his first season.

• Born in the Black Sea port of Trabzon, Günes became a legendary figure at his local club, keeping goal in theTrabzonspor side that won the Turkish league title six times – and the Turkish Cup three times – during his 15-yearspell from 1972-87; also won 31 caps for Turkey, captaining the team on five occasions.

• Made the natural transition from player to coach at Trabzonspor after hanging up his gloves, moving up swiftly fromassistant to head coach; rejoined the club after spells with Boluspor and İstanbulspor, leading the team from 1993 to1997, claiming the Turkish Cup in 1995 and a league runners-up spot in 1996.

• After brief spells with Antalyaspor and Sakaryaspor he was appointed Turkish national team coach in 2000 andproved an immediate hit, leading the country not only to their first FIFA World Cup finals in 48 years but all the way tothe semi-finals, and third place, of the 2002 tournament in Korea/Japan.

• Left Turkey job after failure to qualify for UEFA EURO 2004 and returned to Trabzonspor but reign was brief and helater resurfaced in Korea Republic – the scene of his greatest triumph – with FC Seoul.

• Returned to Trabzonspor for the fourth time in December 2009 and led club to Turkish Cup and Super Cup triumphthe following year, Trabzonspor then finishing second in the 2010/11 Süper Lig. Spent 2014/15 at Bursaspor, guidingthem to the Turkish Cup final, before taking charge at Beşiktaş in June 2015. Went on to win the league title in hisdebut season – his first championship as a coach.
