La competición alcanza su apogeo en el espléndido escenario del Pavelló Barris Nord de Lleida, donde cuatro clubes, Sporting Clube de Portugal (Portugal), MFK Dinamo Moskva (Rusia), campeón de 2007, Marca Futsal (Italia) y el anfitrión, FC Barcelona (España), clasificado para la fase final en la primera temporada que compite en el certamen, pugnarán por el trofeo.

La fase final en su actual formato de cuatro contendientes se celebró por primera vez en Murcia hace cinco años. Estoy seguro de que, al igual que en 2007, los cuatro equipos que han llegado a Lleida brindarán un espectáculo soberbio en el regreso a España del torneo. Todos los partidos, que prometen convertirse en choques muy reñidos, nos brindarán el gran placer de contemplar el estilo de juego veloz, espectacular y de gran técnica que despliegan los clubes participantes. Me gustaría felicitar a la Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF) y a su presidente, Ángel María Villar Llona, así como al Barcelona y a su presidente, Sandro Rosell, por su inmensa entrega y dedicación a la organización de este esperadísimo certamen. On behalf of UEFA, it is my pleasure to welcome all the participants, officials, players and fans to the 2011/12 UEFA Futsal Cup finals in Lleida. The competition reaches its climax in the splendid setting of Lleida’s Pavelló Barris Nord, where finalists Sporting Clube de Portugal (Portugal), 2007 champions MFK Dinamo Moskva (Russia), Marca Futsal (Italy) and the host club FC Barcelona (Spain) – who have qualified for the finals in their first season in the competition – will vie for the trophy.

The finals in the current four-team format were first held in Murcia five years ago and I am sure that just as in 2007, the four sides here in Lleida will guarantee a great show on the tournament’s return to Spain. Every game promises to be highly competitive and it will be a pleasure to watch the fast, spectacular and highly technical playing style of the clubs involved. I would like to congratulate the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and its president Ángel María Villar Llona as well as hosts Barcelona and their president Sandro Rosell, for their enormous efforts in organising this much-anticipated tournament. All that remains is for me to wish all four sides good luck. May the best team win!

It is with great delight that, thanks to the invitation extended by UEFA, I can wish a warm welcome to everyone taking part in this, the 11th edition of the UEFA Futsal Cup, here in Lleida between 27 and 29 April. I am doubly pleased to be able to do so, firstly because we have a Spanish club among the four finalists, and secondly because we have a Spanish venue and local club charged with organising the tournament. Lleida becomes the second Spanish city to host the final phase, following Murcia in 2007.

Even to get as far as the finals of the UEFA Futsal Cup represents a great achievement, because we are talking about the best four teams in Europe. Spain have been regularly represented among this elite, of course, and Interviú Madrid and Playas de Castellón FS are the two most successful sides in the competition, with three and two European titles respectively. My greatest wish now is that the climax to this 11th edition proves an outstanding success. If this final tournament is to end in triumph, it will be down to three main ingredients: the efforts of the participating clubs and their players, the tremendous commitment shown by the organisers, and the wonderful supporters we have here in Lleida. Best of luck to everyone.

Recibo con satisfacción la invitación que la UEFA me brinda para poder saludar a todos los que de alguna forma van a participar en esta 11ª edición de la Copa de la UEFA de Fútbol Sala que, entre el 27 y el 29 de abril se va a celebrar en Lleida. Me siento doblemente satisfecho, en primer lugar porque entre los cuatro clubes finalistas se encuentra un club español y también por ser un club y una localidad españolas en quienes ha recaído la responsabilidad de su organización. Lleida será la segunda ciudad española que albergue una Final Four, tras haberlo sido Murcia en 2007.

Creo sinceramente que el hecho de alcanzar una fase final de este nivel es en sí un importante logro, porque en ella están los cuatro mejores equipos continentales y, España es un miembro habitual de este club de elegidos. No en vano Interviú Madrid y Playas de Castellón FS, son los dos equipos más laureados en este torneo, con tres y dos títulos respectivamente. Deseo en definitiva que esta nueva edición sea un éxito, del que sin duda serán responsables los clubes participantes y sus jugadores, destacando la importante apuesta de los organizadores y la maravillosa afición con la que cuenta Lleida, ingredientes que aseguran que está fase final de la Copa de la UEFA de Fútbol Sala concluya en auténtico éxito. ¡Suerte para todos!

From 27-29 April, Lleida, the capital of central Catalonia, will host one of the most attractive and vibrant competitions in the European sporting calendar – the UEFA Futsal Cup finals. The decision to select Lleida to host the tournament was particularly pleasing for me on two counts: the city embodies a spirit of enterprise I am convinced will ensure the event is a great success, and secondly, because of my own roots in this area in the Vall d’Àger, and the love I have for it. This is indeed a very special part of the world for me.

We wish to bring FC Barcelona closer to Catalonia as a whole and from the start Lleida got behind the bid to host the biggest futsal event in our country, and I would like to thank them for that. Our players will feel the support of Barça fans up close at the Pavelló Barris Nord and FC Barcelona will have an historic opportunity to claim the only title our five professional sections have yet to win – the UEFA Futsal Cup. I hope the teams and fans of Marca Futsal, MFK Dinamo Moskva and Sporting Club de Portugal enjoy the excitement and sportsmanship of this great spectacle, and also the region of Catalonia – a land rich in culture and cuisine and full of hidden attractions.

Se trata de una parte del mundo muy especial para mí.

Nuestro deseo era acercar el FC Barcelona a toda Catalunya y, desde el principio, Lleida apoyó sin reservas la candidatura para organizar en nuestro país la competición de fútbol sala más importante. Quiero agradecérselo encarecidamente. Having top-scored at UEFA Futsal EURO 2012 in February in winning his fourth European title with Spain, Jordi Torras (pictured below) now aims to emulate the feat at club level by clinching the UEFA Futsal Cup with hosts FC Barcelona. The 31-year-old fired Barcelona with six goals in qualifying and having previously won the competition with Interviú Madrid in 2009, dreams of doing so again with the team where his career began. For this native of Catalonia, playing at home in Lleida only heightens the desire to succeed again.

“Our only objective is to win the competition and we’re going to give it everything,” he said. “It would be historic and really wonderful to win it at home in Lleida, so we have to go for it. Lleida is one of the biggest cities in Catalonia and these finals will be welcomed with open arms. The Pavelló Barris Nord will be full and I’m sure the public will respond to the event in a big way. In Lleida, the Seu Cathedral is well worth a visit and the old town is a must-see – the old streets and antique style are beautiful.

“For eating out, visitors should definitely try the escargots.It is a typical dish from the area and with a glass of local wine it makes for a really nice meal. I have won this trophy with Interviú Madrid but now I am back in my home region and it would be unbelievable to win it with Barcelona in front of family, friends and fans. This is the most prestigious tournament, but we have to keep our feet on the ground. We might be favourites but we have to show it on the pitch.”

For the first time, the venue for the 2012 finals is not home to any of the four finalists. The ‘host’ on this occasion is FC Barcelona, whose innovative idea was to take the tournament inland to one of Catalonia’s key regional cities, Lleida. The Pavelló Barris Nord is home to the city’s basketball team, Lleida Basquetbol whose promotion to the top division in 2001 created an urgent need to build a hall which conformed to regulations on capacity.

The result was a magnificent sports hall which was built in 125 days, with 40 different companies working on the project. Two years later, another 1,000 was added to the capacity which, for this event, will be around 5,500. The location raises questions about to what extent Barcelona will enjoy home advantage – if, in this competition, it counts for much. During its 10-year life-span only two teams have lifted the trophy in their home town – Playas de Castellón in 2003 and SL Benfica in 2010.

Por primera vez, la sede de la fase final de 2012 no es el hogar de ninguno de los cuatro finalistas. El “anfitrión” en esta ocasión es el FC Barcelona, y suya fue la idea innovadora de llevar la competición a otra ciudad de Cataluya, Lleida, la capital de la comarca del Segrià, situada en las tierras de poniente de la comunidad catalana. El Pavelló Barris Nord es sede del club de baloncesto de la ciudad, el Lleida Basquetbol.

Cuando el equipo ascendió a primera división en 2001, la entidad se vio obligada a construir un pabellón que cumpliera con los requisitos mínimos de capacidad exigidos en la liga. El resultado fue esta magnífica instalación deportiva, construida en 125 días, con 40 empresas diferentes trabajando en el proyecto. Dos años después se amplió para añadirle 1.000 plazas más. Para esta competición, el recinto contará con un aforo de unas 5.500 localidades.

Carmona, antiguo jugador de fútbol sala del Barcelona, regresó al club como entrenador en 2004 después de varias temporadas en los banquillos del FS Martorell, FS Montcafa y FS Santa Coloma. Condujo al Barça al ascenso en 2006 y a su primer título de liga el año pasado. Carmona también entrenó a la selección de fútbol sala de Catalunya durante 13 años, y con ella conquistó dos Campeonatos de España de Selecciones Territoriales.

Former Barcelona futsal player Carmona became coach in 2004 after spells in charge of FS Martorell, FS Montcafa and FS Santa Coloma. He led Barça to promotion in 2006, and their first league title last year. Carmona also coached the Catalonia futsal side for 13 years, winning two regional championships.

In February, Spain’s futsal players ensured that their European title still sits alongside the nation’s continental football crown; now FC Barcelona have the chance to secure a similar mirror image at club level. This is a Barcelona side boasting UEFA Futsal EURO 2012 golden boot winner Jordi Torras and two-goal final hero Sergio Lozano alongside Lin and Fernandao, another Spain star who missed the Croatia tournament through injury. They also have the hero of so many past national-team triumphs, Javi Rodríguez, Italy’s Saad Assis and Brazil’s FIFA Futsal World Cup champions Wilde and Gabriel in an all-star squad that stands comparison with the Playas de Castellón FS and Interviú Madrid sides that brought Spain five of the first ten UEFA Futsal Cups.

Barcelona have marched through their debut European campaign, winning their first five games and then getting the draw they needed against the experienced Araz Naxçivan, even though they let a two-goal lead slip. As hosts they can look to emulate another famous footballing name, SL Benfica, who lifted the trophy in front of a fervent Lisbon crowd two years ago, and it is an opportunity they are relishing. Rodríguez – a winner with Playas in 2002 and 2003 – said: “This is excellent news, as we have the opportunity to offer a great Azulgrana spectacle to people from all over Catalonia.”

Javi Rodríguez is the most celebrated player in Spain, having won everything there is to win with club and country. He lifted the first two UEFA Futsal Cups with Playas de Castellón FS before leaving them in 2006 to spearhead FC Barcelona’s ambitious new project. Having led Barcelona to their first Spanish title in 2011, the 37-year-old has his sights set on European glory once again.

When you signed for the club in 2006, did you think there was the prospect of such success?Yes, because I knew I was joining the best club in the world. When I arrived I had only one objective: to develop with the squad and win trophies. Last season we started to achieve this but it has taken a lot of patience and hard work.

How have you developed as a player over the last ten years?It has happened step by step. If you want to develop, you need to have the desire to do so. Desire helps you learn every day, and I think you do learn something every day, including the bad days. You learn from everyone.

A Spanish club hasn’t won this competition since 2009. Are Barcelona going to change that?I hope so. It’s clear futsal is going through a period of growth. The Spanish league is supposedly the strongest in the world, but in recent years they haven’t won the European cup.

It must be a thrill to play the final tournament in Lleida, so close to home…There are examples where the host club hasn’t won, but it is definitely in our favour to play here, and not in Russia, Italy or Portugal for example. With the help of everyone here, we will try to keep the European cup in Barcelona.

Will you feel pressure playing in the finals?No, honestly not. I believe in pressure, but only in the qualifying group stages. There you have the pressure to qualify. Once you have qualified, you have to try and enjoy it because you never know if you’ll return to a European finals again.

Cuando fichó por el club en 2006, ¿creyó que había posibilidad de alcanzar tantos éxitos?Sí, porque sabía que iba a jugar en el mejor club del mundo. Cuando llegué, perseguía un único objetivo: crecer con la plantilla y ganar trofeos. Empezamos a lograrlo la pasada temporada, pero ha requerido mucha paciencia y muchísimo trabajo.

¿Cómo se ha formado en el juego en los últimos diez años?Paso a paso. Para perfeccionar tu juego, hay que ponerle ganas. Las ganas te ayudan a aprender cada día. Yo creo que siempre se aprende algo todos los días, incluso en días malos. Se aprende de todo el mundo.

Ningún club español ha ganado esta competición desde 2009. ¿Cambiará el Barcelona esta situación?Eso espero. Es evidente que el fútbol sala pasa por un periodo de crecimiento. Aunque la liga española está considerada la más fuerte del mundo, en los últimos años no hemos ganado la Copa de Europa.

Les resultará del todo estimulante jugar la fase final en Lleida, tan cerca de casa…Se han dado casos en los que el club anfitrión no ha triunfado, pero sin duda nos favorece jugar aquí, y no en Rusia, Italia o Portugal, por ejemplo. Con ayuda de todos, intentaremos que la Copa de Europa se quede en Barcelona.

¿Acusarán la presión de jugar en una fase final?No, de verdad que no. Creo en la presión, pero sólo en las fases de grupos de clasificación. Allí estás obligado a clasificarte. Una vez que lo has conseguido, debes disfrutarlo, porque nunca se sabe si volverás a la fase final europea alguna vez.

Hosts of the inaugural UEFA Futsal Cup final tournament in 2001/02, when they reached the semi-finals, Sporting Clube de Portugal fell just short in their bid to succeed Lisbon rivals SL Benfica as European champions a year ago but have the chance to go one better now. Last season’s Portuguese treble winners made it all the way to their first European final, knocking out hosts Kairat Almaty, but then lost 5-2 to ASD Città di Montesilvano C/5. Since then Cardinal and Divanei have departed but Sporting retain a strong mix of Portuguese internationals like goalkeeper João Benedito, Paulinho, João Matos, Pedro Cary and Leitão, plus experienced Brazilians Marcelinho, Alex, Déo and Caio Japa.

They showed their mettle in the elite round when, after trailing Iberia Star Tbilisi 3-0 at half-time, they delighted their home fans by rallying to get the point they needed with a 5-5 draw courtesy of Leitão’s 39th-minute equaliser. Coach Orlando Duarte praised his team’s spirit afterwards when he said: “If people knew the problems we had in the build-up to this game, including injuries, then they would know just how difficult it was. Leitão had a back problem, Buiu had a knee problem and Alex had only just started training again. We really showed our character and we gave everything to get into the next round.”

After losing their first UEFA Futsal Cup final 5-2 to ASD Città di Montesilvano C/5 a year ago, Sporting Clube de Portugal have qualified again and Pedro Cary believes they have learned important lessons.

How much does defeat in last season’s final in Almaty serve as motivation this time round?I strongly believe it was a positive defeat. Positive in the way that we fully deserved to lose and after that we were able to understand what went wrong in Almaty. I think we were not fully focused on what we had to do on the pitch and we ultimately paid the price.

How does this side compare to last season?Well, unfortunately we lost two players with unbelievable quality: Cardinal and Divanei. Having said that we are doing even better at domestic level. All in all I don’t think it’s fair to say we are a weaker team now but it is almost certain that those two players will be missed in the UEFA Futsal Cup, where you face the best teams in Europe and you really need to have all the cards in your hand if you want a shot at the title.

The last elite round game against Iberia Star Tbilisi was extraordinary. At half-time you were 3-0 down but you battled back to get the point you needed to qualify…We never stopped believing we could come back and go through. Although we were three goals down our coach Orlando Duarte had one of his most relaxed speeches at half-time. It is very rare for us to be behind at half-time so we were a bit surprised when he was the first to tell us that we would mount a comeback after the break. We knew that Iberia’s three goals had mainly happened due to our mistakes so we were confident we could do much better. It was a crazy match, especially in the second half, but in the end we could celebrate qualifying.

What do you know about Barcelona, Dinamo and Marca?Dinamo have a lot of players in the Russia squad and that says pretty much everything about their quality. As for Barcelona, I adore watching them play. They probably have the biggest potential in European futsal right now. They have a lot of excellent players and it is an imposing task to try to beat them. We faced Marca in August and lost 3-2 in a friendly but I do think Barcelona will be the team to beat.

¿Les servirá de motivación la derrota en la gran final de la pasada temporada, disputada en Almaty?Estoy absolutamente convencido de que fue una derrota positiva. Positiva en el sentido de que merecimos perder, y a partir de ahí llegamos a comprender cabalmente qué hicimos mal en Almaty. Creo que no nos concentramos del todo en lo que estábamos haciendo sobre la cancha y al final lo pagamos caro.

¿En qué se parecen el equipo de este año y el de la temporada pasada?Bueno, lamentablemente nos hemos quedado sin dos jugadores de una calidad increíble: Cardinal y Divanei. Dicho esto, estamos haciéndolo mejor en las competiciones nacionales. En general, no me parece justo que se diga que ahora tenemos un equipo más débil. Sin embargo, creo que echaremos de menos a esos dos jugadores en la Copa de la UEFA de Fútbol Sala, donde te enfrentas a los mejores de Europa y debes tener todos los ases en la mano si aspiras a hacerte con el título.

Su último partido de la ronda élite, contra el Iberia Star Tbilisi, fue extraordinario. Llegaron al descanso con un 3-0 adverso, pero lucharon por meterse en el partido hasta conseguir el punto que necesitaban para clasificarse…Jamás perdimos la fe en que podíamos remontar y conseguir el pase. Durante el descanso, aunque el rival nos llevaba una ventaja de tres goles, nuestro entrenador, Orlando Duarte, nos dedicó una de sus arengas más relajadas. No es normal que nosotros lleguemos al intermedio con desventaja en el marcador, por eso nos sorprendió un poco que él fuera el primero en asegurarnos que lograríamos la remontada en la segunda parte. Sabíamos que los tres goles del Iberia habían sido resultado de nuestros errores, de manera que estábamos convencidos de que podíamos hacerlo mucho mejor. Fue un partido delirante, especialmente en la segunda parte, pero al final celebramos la clasificación.

¿Qué saben del Barcelona, del Dínamo y del Marca?El Dínamo tiene muchos jugadores en la selección de Rusia y eso lo dice todo de su calidad. En cuanto al Barcelona, me encanta verlo jugar. Estamos hablando del equipo de fútbol sala europeo que hoy en día tiene más proyección. Cuenta con muchos hombres excelentes, e intentar imponerse a ellos cuesta horrores. Nos enfrentamos al Marca en agosto en un amistoso y perdimos por 3-2, pero creo que el Barcelona será el equipo a vencer.

The sight of blue and red ribbons on a European trophy is nothing new where FC Barcelona are concerned. But it has never been seen in futsal and as Marc Carmona’s men bid to emulate their footballing counterparts by winning the UEFA Futsal Cup, it is worth noting they will do so with more than a passing interest from Josep Guardiola’s side.

David Villa, who helped make the draw for the semi-finals during half-time of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final triumph against AC Milan, is an enthusiast of the small-sided game. So too Xavi Hernández, which should come as little surprise; after all, to use the broadest of brushstrokes, Barcelona’s swift, short-passing game, with its focus on technical excellence, is not dissimilar to the style employed in futsal. Villa himself accepts the similarities “especially when attacking with all those short passes between many players, handling the ball well, and keeping a lot of possession”.

The Spain striker played futsal up to the age of nine, and believes it provided a good grounding, despite its slightly differing demands. “Futsal is a bit more technical than football. I also think that, because you play a shorter amount of time, there are different physical requirements, because you need to constantly run,” he explains.

It is a reflection of futsal’s popularity in Spain that both Villa and Xavi still play the sport with friends when the opportunity allows. Xavi, as he explains, also enjoys watching. “I like the sport because you can see a player’s talent,” says the Blaugrana and Spain playmaker. “Perhaps in normal football you cannot always appreciate their talent – everything is more physical and in futsal you have small details of quality, class, tactical aspects. Barcelona have put together an amazing team. Last year they almost won every title, and they’re a very competitive team. It is a pleasure to watch them.”

This support is gratefully received according to Jordi Torras, the Barcelona player and UEFA Futsal EURO 2012 golden boot winner. It is a by-product of being part of a club which promotes excellence in various sports. “We often run into the basketball, hockey, and handball squads,” Torras says. “They are close to us, as we train and play on the same pitch, but there is also great support from the football players. I have met Xavi many times, and he is a real fan of this sport; he congratulates us and always has something to say.” According to Javi Rodríguez, captain of the UEFA Futsal Cup hosts, the

El Barcelona ha montado un equipo soberbio. El año pasado estuvo a punto de ganar el título. Es un equipo muy competitivo, y da gusto verlo jugar”.

Este respaldo se agradece enormemente, según explica el jugador del Barcelona Jordi Torras, ganador de la Bota de Oro del Campeonato de Europa de Fútbol Sala de la UEFA 2012. Es consecuencia directa de formar parte de un club que fomenta la excelencia en varios deportes. “Solemos encontrarnos con los equipos de baloncesto, hockey y balonmano”, comenta Torras. “Estamos muy unidos, porque nos entrenamos y jugamos en el mismo pabellón, pero también recibimos un gran apoyo por parte de los jugadores de fútbol. Me he encontrado con Xavi muchas veces. Es un gran aficionado a este deporte; nos felicita y siempre tiene algún comentario que hacer”. European conquests of not just the club’s footballers but also their basketball, hockey and handball players are “a source of inspiration” for the futsal team, who only won their first national title in 2011.

After their victory in the Spanish League Cup in March, the futsal team paraded the trophy at Camp Nou when Barcelona played Granada CF, and there is an evident mutual respect underlined by Villa as he singles out Rodríguez, twice a European champion with Playas de Castellón FS, as his favourite player. “He is the best player for me, in terms of the history of this sport,” he says. Villa’s hope is now is that Rodríguez is soon celebrating another triumph. “I hope that Barça have a good final tournament. Let’s see if they can win the title. I would like to see them do well and have as much luck as possible.”

In the 11th edition, a new name could be engraved on the UEFA Futsal Cup trophy, with MFK Dinamo Moskva the only former champions to reach Lleida. FC Barcelona and Marca Futsal are making debuts in the finals, whereas Sporting Clube de Portugal, last year’s silver-medallists, were among 27 ‘founder members’ when the competition was born in 2001/02. Its soaring popularity is reflected by the record-breaking 49 participants who set out on the road to Lleida. Spanish clubs took the first three titles – and Barça could take their tally to six. Russia, sending teams into six of 10 finals, is the only other country to have lifted the trophy more than once, with MFK Dinamo one of two clubs to have benefited from the third-time lucky syndrome. After defeats in the 2005 and 2006 finals, they won the first four-team final tournament in Murcia in 2007.

A similar story belongs to Belgian club Action 21 Charleroi who, after losing the first two finals to Playas de Castellón, grabbed the crown in Moscow in 2005, clawing back to 6-6 to earn a dramatic 10-9 aggregate win over MFK Dinamo in the first of three finals to go to extra time. Clubs from Portugal (SL Benfica) and Italy (ASD Città di Montesilvano C/5) won the title for the first time in the last two editions, and Sporting and Marca will be chasing their nations’ second triumph in the competition this time round. Barcelona, meanwhile, are aiming for a unique double: champions of the outdoor and indoor games at the same time.

En su primera temporada completa en el club italiano ha conducido al equipo hasta su primer triunfo en el campeonato nacional de liga.

Showing that Portugal can produce top-class young coaches in futsal as well as football, Polido has experience in his homeland, Spain and Croatia as well as Italy. Founded in 2005 as Marca Trevigiana after a takeover of Treviso C/5, the Castelfranco Veneto-based club took only two seasons to reach Italy’s top division. Such was their rapid rise that in their Serie A2 title-winning campaign of 2006/07, they also became the first side from that level to make the overall championship play-off semi-finals. Having lifted the Coppa Italia in 2010, Marca – who took their current name in 2009 – were champions last term and have since stormed through their debut UEFA Futsal Cup campaign. They won their first five games before getting the draw they needed against holders ASD Città di Montesilvano C/5 to depose their Serie A rivals.

Marca are the third straight Italian finalists and their squad contains several players with past UEFA Futsal Cup experience, not least summer signing Adriano Foglia and winter arrival Clayton Baptistella – both winners last year with Montesilvano. Carlos Chilavert was a 2010 semi-finalist with Luparense C/5 while Edgar Bertoni was a runner-up in 2007 with Interviú Madrid. Bertoni and Foglia also have the experience of helping Italy to the 2003 UEFA European Futsal Championship and behind them is ex-Azzurri goalkeeper Alexandre Feller. In charge of a squad also containing the prolific Jonas Pinto is 32-year-old Tiago Polido, who is circumspect about their chances: “All the teams are full of great players, so for me, there are no clear favourites.”

At 40 I have the same enthusiasm as when I began my career.

Marca Futsal goalkeeper Alexandre Feller will be playing in his first UEFA Futsal Cup at 40 and is hopeful his side can match the feat of last year’s Italian winners ASD Città di Montesilvano C/5, who they knocked out in this season’s elite round.

What does it mean to you to play in the UEFA Futsal Cup finals? For me to reach this goal at 40 is truly rewarding, after much effort and much hard work because this is the most difficult competition, it’s not easy to get among the best four teams in Europe.

How do you explain your longevity? At 40 I have the same enthusiasm as when I began my career as a futsal goalkeeper. I find enthusiasm in every training session and in every game I face, and I can say I still have much desire to go on playing futsal because I feel I’m still competitive at a high level. I still have high motivation to try to win trophies.

An Italian team, Montesilvano, won last year and for the third time in a row there will be an Italian team in the finals. What does this say about Italian futsal? It means that Italian futsal confirms every year that it is very competitive. This means Italian clubs are finding the right path, but this doesn’t imply that we do not have to keep on improving because it was very difficult to reach these goals.

What were the keys for knocking out Montesilvano in Padova? First of all I want to congratulate Montesilvano, outgoing UEFA Futsal Cup holders: this team did something very important for Italian futsal, something it will be very difficult to repeat. Then, of course, our confidence increased because to eliminate a strong team like Montesilvano is never easy. But that is not all, the other teams were also of the highest standard. Our secret in the elite round in Padova was our team play, although we were not at our best.

How is your relationship with coach Tiago Polido, considering that he is nearly ten years younger than you? The fact he’s nearly ten years younger than me does not mean anything, because he treats me the same as all my team-mates and does not mix his job with the personal. In my opinion he will acquire even more experience and will become one of the best around.

¿Qué significa para usted participar en la fase final de la Copa de la UEFA de Fútbol Sala? Para mí, alcanzar este objetivo a la edad de 40 años representa toda una recompensa al esfuerzo, al trabajo y a la dedicación, no en vano se trata de la competición más complicada. No es fácil figurar entre los cuatro mejores equipos de Europa.

¿Cómo se explica su longevidad en el juego? A mis 40 años me mueve el mismo entusiasmo que cuando empecé la carrera de portero de fútbol sala. Me entusiasmo en cada sesión de entrenamiento y en cada partido que juego. Puedo asegurarles que todavía siento unas ganas enormes de jugar al fútbol sala, porque creo que sigo siendo competitivo al máximo nivel. Todavía me estimula la motivación de ganar trofeos.

Un equipo italiano, el Montesilvano, triunfó el año pasado, y ahora Italia estará representada en la fase final por tercera edición consecutiva. ¿Qué dice todo esto del fútbol sala italiano? Dice que el fútbol sala italiano confirma cada año su competitividad. Todos estos datos significan que los clubes italianos avanzan por la senda correcta, aunque eso no quita que tengamos que seguir mejorando, porque nos ha costado muchísimo alcanzar esos objetivos.

¿Cuáles fueron los factores decisivos que les permitieron eliminar al Montesilvano en Padua? En primer lugar, deseo felicitar al Montesilvano, defensor este año del título de la Copa de la UEFA de Fútbol Sala. El equipo ha dado triunfos muy importantes al fútbol sala italiano y ha protagonizado gestas muy difíciles de repetir. Lógicamente, nuestra confianza subió muchos enteros, porque eliminar a un equipazo como el Montesilvano no es cualquier cosa. Pero eso no es todo. Los demás rivales también poseen una calidad excepcional. El secreto de nuestro éxito en la ronda élite, en Padua, fue el trabajo en equipo, aunque no jugamos todo lo bien que sabemos.

¿Cómo son sus relaciones con su entrenador, Tiago Polido, teniendo en cuenta que usted le lleva casi diez años? El hecho de que tenga casi diez años menos que yo no quiere decir nada. Me trata exactamente igual que al resto de los compañeros y no mezcla el trabajo con lo personal. En mi opinión, seguirá acumulando experiencia y se convertirá en uno de los mejores del oficio.

Pérez alzó las dos primeras Copas de la UEFA de Fútbol Sala al mando del Playas de Castellón FS, en 2001/02 y 2002/03. Tras una estancia en Rumanía, llegó al Dinamo, al que dirigió la pasada temporada hasta hacerse con el doblete de trofeos rusos.

Pérez won the first two UEFA Futsal Cups at the helm of Playas de Castellón FS in 2001/02 and 2002/03, having previously also claimed the Spanish championship and an unofficial European title with Talavera FS. After a two-year European hiatus that followed the loss of their Russian championship to MFK Sinara Ekaterinburg, MFK Dinamo Moskva reclaimed the domestic crown last season and will now become the first team to appear in four UEFA Futsal Cup final tournaments since the current format’s introduction in 2007. That was the year Dinamo clinched the trophy in Murcia, having lost in the last two-legged finals of 2005 and 2006, though much has changed since then. Konstantin Eremenko, Russia’s record-breaking goalscorer who went on to build Dinamo up as president, died in March 2010 and Andrei Gubernski took over the reins.

Meanwhile, long-serving coach Yuri Rudnev made way for the Spaniard Faustino Pérez. Since Dinamo’s last European outings, the likes of Pavel Kobzar, Cirilo, Pula (suspended for the semi-final), Tatù, Aleksandr Fukin and Vladislav Shayakhmetov – now back from long-term injury – have been bolstered by attacking talents Vinicius and Fernandinho. Cirilo’s last-gasp equaliser against Kairat Almaty, the side that denied them bronze in 2009, took Dinamo through the elite round, and he said: “The biggest strength Dinamo have is our team play. All 14 players are ready to fight for each other. These world-class players are true professionals. What is more, we can rotate the lineup. Let’s say one player picks up an injury, he can be easily replaced.”

Cirilo was part of the MFK Dinamo Moskva side that won the UEFA Futsal Cup in 2007 having lost in the previous two finals. This season he scored the last-gasp goal against Kairat Almaty that took Dinamo to Lleida. Now he wants to repeat the high of five years ago.

What was the feeling when you scored the equaliser so late against Kairat?This was one of the best moments of my entire career and one of the best goals I’ve scored for Dinamo. It was a really emotional moment. All the Dinamo players were extremely happy and celebrated the success together with the fans like a big family.

What do you know about Barcelona, Marca and Sporting?I’ve got a couple of mates at Barcelona – Saad Assis and Fernandao – so I’m well aware of their strength. I think they are the favourites. But I like Sporting as well. We played a friendly against them and I am a big fan of the Brazilian and Portuguese players they have. Marca are a very similar standard. In general Italian futsal is on the rise so they are really dangerous.

When you played in Murcia in 2007, Dinamo had lost the previous two finals: what did it mean to finally win the UEFA Futsal Cup at the third time of asking?Before playing Interviú Madrid we thought they were better than us. I don’t know why, but I think all of us had the same feeling. They really had some quality players, star players. But that feeling disappeared after the first whistle as we were the better team on the pitch. For the club to win their first UEFA Cup… we were in seventh heaven!

Describe what it is like to get your hands on the trophy…Winning a trophy is a career high for any player. This is a dream come true. Only when you lift the trophy do you realise you have achieved something significant in your sport.

In the Russian league you play 50-minute games: do you prefer that, and is it hard to adapt to play shorter games when you play international matches?Of course, it’s true that after the games in the Russian leagues, it’s a bit weird to play 20-minute halves. It seems like time is running very quick and the games are really short. The match has just kicked off, you look at the board and it’s almost half-time. I’m not sure what is better, I’m just more used to the Russian format.

¿Qué sintió al anotar el gol del empate en los últimos segundos del partido contra el Kairat?Fue uno de los mejores momentos de toda mi carrera y uno de los mejores goles que he marcado con el Dinamo. Fue un momento realmente emotivo. Todos los compañeros del Dinamo se alegraron enormemente, y celebramos el éxito con los aficionados como una gran familia.

¿Qué sabe del Barcelona, el Marca y el Sporting?Tengo un par de amigos en el Barcelona, Saad Assis y Fernandao, y conozco muy bien sus grandes cualidades. Creo que el Barça es el favorito. Pero también me gusta el Sporting, al que nos enfrentamos en un amistoso. Soy gran admirador de los jugadores brasileños y portugueses que tiene el equipo. El Marca atesora una calidad muy parecida. En general, el fútbol sala italiano se encuentra en pleno ascenso, y plantea mucho peligro.

Cuando jugaron en Murcia en 2007, el Dinamo había perdido las dos finales anteriores. ¿Qué significó para ustedes ganar por fin, al tercer intento, la Copa de la UEFA de Fútbol Sala?Antes de enfrentarnos al Interviú Madrid, pensábamos que el rival era mejor que nosotros. No sé por qué, pero creo que todos opinábamos lo mismo. Tenía jugadores de gran calidad, hombres sobresalientes. Pero esa creencia se evaporó tras el pitido inicial, puesto que nosotros fuimos el mejor equipo sobre la cancha. Ganamos la primera Copa de la UEFA de nuestro club… ¡llegamos al séptimo cielo!

Explíquenos que se siente al agarrar el trofeo con las manos…Conquistar un trofeo supone el punto culminante en la carrera de cualquier jugador. Se trata de un sueño hecho realidad. Solo cuando levantas un trofeo comprendes que has alcanzado un hito muy importante en tu deporte.

En la liga rusa se juegan encuentros de 50 minutos. ¿Lo prefiere así, o cuesta demasiado adaptarse a disputar partidos más cortos en las competiciones internacionales?Está claro que, acostumbrado a la liga rusa, se te hace muy raro jugar periodos de 20 minutos. Parece que el tiempo pase muy deprisa y los partidos sean cortísimos. Empieza el choque, miras el marcador y casi ha acabado la primera parte. No sé bien qué es mejor, pero estoy más habituado al formato ruso.

A record 49 clubs from 48 nations began the 2011/12 UEFA Futsal Cup and, after three qualifying group stages, two of the 11 debutants had earned places in the finals. Neither FC Barcelona nor fellow newcomers Marca Futsal were among the 28 teams involved in the preliminary round but of the seven group winners that progressed, FC Geneva became the first Swiss team to get through a stage of this competition and Vegakameratene achieved a similar feat for Norway. In all 12 sides, also including Barça and Marca, progressed to join the top four seeds in the elite round. It is a mark of the growing strength of the competition that only one of those four seeds, Sporting Clube de Portugal, reached the finals. Dinamo denied last season’s bronze-medalists Kairat Almaty on goal difference thanks to Cirilo’s last-gasp equaliser in Moscow, Barcelona got the 2-2 draw they needed to top Araz Naxçivan in their decider, and the same scoreline ensured Marca ended the title defence of fellow Italians ASD Città di Montesilvano C/5. Rules of the gameReglas del juego

TimeFour international futsal referees have been appointed to apply the laws of the game at the final tournament, along with one local timekeeper who will make sure that exactly 20 minutes of real time are played in each half. There will be no extra time in the bronze-medal match but the other games will, if they are drawn, go into two five-minute periods and, if the scores are still level, will be settled by a penalty shoot-out.

FoulsThe timekeeper also keeps count of the fouls and, if a team commits more than five in each period, they are playing with fire. From the sixth foul, their opponents get a free shot at goal from the second penalty mark, 10 metres out. If there is extra time, fouls from the second half are carried into the additional 10 minutes.

CardsTwo yellow cards – or a direct red – mean that the player takes no further part in the game and his team play one man short for a period of two minutes. But if their opponents score during that time, they can send a fifth player back on.

SubstitutionsSubstitutions are unlimited, with the proviso that the player(s) coming on do not enter the pitch before

team-mates come off – and that they enter from the two five-metre areas marked on the touchline in front of each bench.

Flying goalkeeperThe flying goalkeeper is a tactical ploy normally used when a team is trailing with not much time left on the clock. But the fifth outfielder has to put on a keeper’s jersey with the same colours but his own individual number.

Time-outA 60-second time-out can be called by each coach during each half of the game. But there are no time-outs in extra time.

The ballEver headed a futsal ball? If not, brace yourself. With a circumference of 62-64cm, it is about 10% smaller than the outdoor ball but the weight (400-440gm) is about the same and so is the pressure. When it hits you, you know it. You do not see it bouncing over the goalkeeper – when dropped from 2m, the bounce has to be between 50 and 65cm. It means that passes need to be firmly struck and that keepers – most choose not to wear gloves – need strong hands and wrists. The adidas Tango 12 ball chosen for the UEFA Futsal Cup was praised by players and coaches at the UEFA Futsal EURO earlier this year.

TiempoCuatro árbitros internacionales de fútbol sala han sido nombrados para que hagan cumplir las reglas del juego en la fase final, además de un cronometrador nacional, quien se asegurará de que se disputen exactamente 20 minutos de tiempo real en cada periodo de juego. SustitucionesLa cantidad de sustituciones es ilimitada, a condición de que el jugador o los jugadores entrantes no salten a la superficie de juego antes de que sus compañeros de equipo salientes abandonen la cancha, y de que accedan a ella desde las dos áreas de cinco metros delimitadas delante de cada banquillo.

Portero-jugadorEl portero-jugador es un ardid táctico que se suele emplear cuando un equipo va perdiendo y no queda mucho tiempo de juego. Pero el quinto jugador de campo debe enfundarse en una camiseta de portero con los mismos colores y su propio número individual.

Tiempo muertoCada entrenador puede pedir 60 segundos de tiempo muerto en cada mitad del partido. No habrá periodos de tiempo muerto en la prórroga.

El balón¿Alguna vez has cabeceado un balón de fútbol sala? Pues prepárate si quieres intentarlo. Con una circunferencia de 62-64 cm, es aproximadamente un 10% más pequeño que el balón de fútbol sobre hierba, pero tiene más o menos el mismo peso (400-440 g) y también una presión similar. Cuando te pega, ¡vaya si te enteras! No lo verás rebotando por encima del portero. Dejado caer desde una altura de 2 metros, el rebote alcanza entre 50 y 65 cm. REFEREESÁRbitRoS

Three referees are involved in each match, with one on each touchline, and a third near the table to liaise with the timekeeper and to control fouls, time-outs and other logistics. Futsal referees have a series of choreographed signals to communicate clearly to players, coaches, spectators – and each other – with minimised disruption to the flow of the game.

Tres árbitros dirigen cada partido, uno en cada línea de banda y el tercero cerca de la mesa, para comunicarse con el cronometrador y controlar faltas, tiempos muertos y demás aspectos logísticos.
