USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighters visited aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) while underway in the Arabian Gulf April 16. UFC superstars Rich Franklin and Keith Jardine came to Big E during the ship’s 22nd and final deployment to visit the crew, sign autographs and give a brief grappling demonstration. Following their arrival aboard Enterprise, Jardine and Franklin went down to the hangar bay and gave a brief performance, enlisting the help of an Enterprise Sailor and several Marines assigned to the Thunderbolts of Marine fighter attack squadron (VMFA) 251. The fighters demonstrated wrestling moves and jiu-jitsu techniques while answering questions from the crowd attending the exhibition. “These visits build morale,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 1st Class Brandon R. Breitberg. “It’s good to stop our high-tempo operational schedule and watch a great demonstration with two great fighters. It is nice to see them mix it up and interact with Marines and Sailors.” After the demo was over, the fighters took pictures and signed autographs with hundreds of crewmembers. Sailors and Marines patiently waited as the fighters took the time to make sure each Sailor was able to get a picture taken with them. “It’s really exciting for these particular fighters to have come to our ship,” said Aviation Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class Robert Gardner. “You have seen them on TV in the ring, and to be able to meet and interact with them is something that can take you to a new level.” After the autograph and photo session, Franklin and Jardine had lunch with members of the ship’s crew on the aft mess decks, taking the time to speak with each of the Sailors and Marines at the meal. UFC Visit “You hear people say ‘support your troops.’” Well, I come out and do things like this,” said Rich Franklin, former UFC middleweight champion. “Coming out to these ships, especially when these service members are deployed for so many months at a time, I could not imagine doing a deployment. I have visited all types of different military installations and the service members on the ships are the most appreciative of our visits.” The fighters also took the time to briefly tour the ship, making stops in the Enterprise Room, flight deck control, primary flight control and the flight deck during flight operations. While on the flight deck, Jardine and Franklin took pictures with crew members who were unable to attend the hangar bay demonstration. “This is the least I can do, to come out here and give some gratitude to the people that make it possible for me to do what I do on a daily basis and fight,” said Franklin. “I truly appreciate what you are doing out here and thank you.” Enterprise is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operation efforts and support missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
