FOBR/RTBC MERGER:by Al Alfonso

The Declaration of Unity was unprecedented. The three major bowling organization of Riyadh unanimously and unequivocally declared their decision to unite under an umbrella organization, the Unified Filipino Tenpin Bowlers of Riyadh (UFTBR). The unification was a milestone that brought forth the realization of the long sought unity among the bowlers of Riyadh. It happened in November 2008 when the seed for UFTBR was planted. Sadly, it was short lived; one group broke away from the union.

UFTBR respected their decision. The two remain-ing group, the Filipino Overseas Bowlers of Ri-yadh (FOBR) and the Riyadh Tenpin Bowlers Co-alition (RTBC) stuck together. They kept the light of unity shining brightly, autonomously organized their own leagues while alternately leading joint activities. The bowlers of Riyadh supported these events irrespective of group affiliations -.without a shadow of doubt - a display of unity in action.

The idea of merger has been put forward since the early part of 2010. It was deferred only for consultation with the individual members of the two organizations. Other than some members’ expression of emotional attachment with their respective organization, no oppositions were registered against the plan. Thus on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, the UFTBR Board of Directors represented by the Officers of the Filipino Over-seas Bowlers of Riyadh (FOBR) and Riyadh Ten-pin Bowlers Coalition (RTBC) held a meeting at Al Khozama Bowling Center. They finally agreed and officially declared:

• The Filipino Overseas Bowlers of Riyadh (FOBR) and the Riyadh Tenpin Bowlers Co-alition (RTBC) merged into one organization and adopted the name “Unified Filipino Ten-pin Bowlers of Riyadh” (UFTBR).

• In the process, UFTBR shall become an in-dependent and the sole organization that will represent and work for the interest of its members.

• Mr. Ernee Noto, the multi-awarded bowl-ing veteran and respected bowling icon is unanimously chosen to lead an Interim Of-ficers of his choice tasked to re-write the UFTBR Constitution and By-laws which will pave the way for the Election of Officers by the general membership.

The FOBR/RTBC merger reflects the sentiments and aspirations of the individual members of both organizations. It will further put to rest all per-ceived divisions and confusion of having one too many organization. The appointment of Mr. Noto to lead UFTBR is fitting and appropriate. The tran-sition period is critical as it is fragile and Mr. Noto will provide instant stability needed to an other-wise volatile situation. For now everything else will give way to mem-bers’ feeling of euphoria and elation. There is enthusiasm and excitement in the air; expecta-tion of more challenges and of fun. Lest we for-get, Ernee Noto will need everyone’s support. The tasks at hand are awesome and individual members must do their share. Unity must be ac-companied by commitment to work together and support one another.

In the closing ceremonies, Mr. Ernee Noto ac-knowledged and thanked all the sponsors of the event namely: Al Mousim Travel and Tours - Mr. Oscar Vanderlipe, ITQAN Bowlers Group (IBG) - Mr. Abdulrazzak Bin Abdullah, House of Donuts, Pro-Shop - Mr. Nader El Kady, Al Ra-bie, Skyfreight Forwarders - Mr. Jimmy Hugo, McDonalds, Riyadh Chinese, Blue Ribbon Bake Shop, Lotus Restaurant, Mr. Art Yukong and Mr. Buddy Balisi. The tournament was a landmark achieve-ment especially right after the merger of three bowling groups under the umbrella of UFTBR. It was a resounding affirmation and a vote of confidence to the leaders of the revitalized UFTBR organization which was also celebrat-ing its third founding anniversary. Members and Officers of Filipino Bowlers Group of Riyadh (FBGR) also participated and provided support to the event. It was indeed a show of force, a manifestation of unity and a display of genuine harmony regardless of affiliation, to the delight of every bowler in this capital city. For many, it was taken as a good sign, there is clamor for similar big bowling events to be held regularly and plans for more bowling excitements to be organized jointly by UFTBR and FBGR are al-ready in the offing.

Excerpts from Ernee Noto’s Message during the Induction Ceremonies:

First priority among my programs of course is dealing with our common denominator which is “BOWLING”. I intend to add more excitements to our bowling events and leagues. Our bowling training program for new bowlers and skills improvement for regular bowlers has already started under the leadership of our Head Coach and Trainer Mr. Vic Barrazona………..

UFTBR has to evolve, somehow we have to look forward beyond bowling. For example, we’ve got to have some social responsibilities and we have to think of other benefits to our members aside from playing bowling. At the right time, I will present all my programs after consultation with my officers, advisers and of course from the membership body…………….

I am not “superman” as many would like to tag me, I need the help and support of everyone, let’s make UFTBR relevant, lets put more meaning and substance to our existence, I assure you it will be a journey filled with thrill and excitement just like playing bowling…………...

Message on FOBR and RTBC Merger from Ms Pat Nave“Once upon a stormy season we planted seeds of patience & perseverance beneath the vision of Unity”.Dear All, During UFTBR’s infantile period, bowlers, friends and Embassy Officials were overjoyed by the ini-tiative undertaken by the Interim Officers. Proudly, our initial took off was packed with excitement & enthusiasm, everyone shared the thrill brought by the Declaration of UNITY. UFTBR achieved fame & recognition not only in the Kingdom but all over GCC, coveting most of the prestigious awardsHowever, along the way of pursuing this mission UFTBR encountered challenges but this harrowing period did not hinder the UFTBR from pursing its

mission, Officers remained steadfast in pursuit of UNITY holding firm to its mandate and the ‘Defining Moments’ authored by Mr. Vic Barrazona ended and sealed the brawl. The period of baby-sitting & nurturing has come to an end. Organizational restructuring was neces-sary to further strengthen the unified force. The two Organizations (FOBR & RTBC) were finally merged. I congratulate the Chairmen & Officers of FOBR & RTBC for giving way to the inevitable. The BoD appointed Mr. Superman, Ernee Noto, a renowned multi awarded bowler who is known by most for his exceptional display of bowling know how, to lead the new mandate. We are all confident he is not only super bowler but also a super leader. With this, I would like to thank all the Officers for standing beside me during UFTBR’s ups and

downs. Also thank you to all the members for sup-porting me during my service in the capacity of UFTBR Chairperson in the past years. THANK YOU.——————————————————————-

FIRST UFTBR OFFICERS MEETING by Beybs Serafico

The newly inducted officers of UFTBR held its first meeting last Nov. 30, 2010 at the Peking Chinese Restaurant. Almost all the officers were present during the meeting (except for James Frizzle). Some advisers (Al Alfonso, Ian Choco, Vic Barra-zona and Pat Nave) were also invited to provide guidance in the proceedings and discussions which was presided by Chairman, Ernee Noto. Foremost in the agenda was a broad discussion on what UFTBR would want to achieve in 2011. Bowling leagues were the first item discussed. Through the motion of Jim Dela Rosa (Director for Techncal Affairs) it was decided unanimously that all bowling leagues will now be under the general direction and guidance of UFTBR (as an offshoot of the unification). While the appointed League Directors will continue to be the overall head in managing and running the league, full support

will be provided by UFTBR primarily from the Di-rector of Internal Affairs (Cesar De Mesa) and the Director for Tournaments and Special Events (Art Palustre). The financial team headed by Armin Isles (Director for Finance and Treasury) will also work closely with the assigned League Treasurers to ensure proper handling, disclosure and report-ing of financial matters pertaining to each bowling leagues. It was also decided that a small portion of the bowling league revenues must be allotted to UFTBR funds. The mechanics and detailed guide-lines on the conduct of UFTBR bowling leagues will be finalized with the appointed League Directors by January 2011.As emphasized by Ernee Noto in his message dur-ing the officers’ induction ceremonies, UFTBR must come up with other benefits to members aside from bowling. Group insurance was discussed as a very practical benefit for members and Beybs Serafico (UFTBR Secretary) was tasked to conduct research and survey on the cost of premium and the range of benefits that can be covered. Other benefits like discounts in stores and establishments will be also looked at. As a gesture of support, the manage-ment of Peking Restaurant has agreed outright (while the meeting was in progress) to give UFTBR members 15% discount in their restaurant. Other similar arrangements will be worked out with Lo-tus Chinese Restaurant, Riyadh Chinese Restau-rant and Dampa Restaurant. Other establishments which will be targeted for members’ discounts are

Sporting Goods and Bowling Equipment Outlets and Cargo Forwarders and Handlers. As a vehicle for community service, UFTBR will revive its medi-cal mission and annual visit to Bahay Kalinga. Other forms of social activities and services will be looked at. This will more or less expand UFTBR’s scope and interest to areas outside bowling. To support UFTBR’s programs, various fund rais-ing schemes were discussed. UFTBR will con-tinuously solicit sponsors for its bowling leagues and special events. Aside from generating funds, this will also lower the registration fee of bowling tournaments and increase the number of partici-pating teams. The mechanics and guideline on solicitation of sponsors will be finalized by next year which will include an incentive scheme for members who will be able to obtain an sponsor-ship deal for UFTBR. Other fund raising programs like sale of souvenir items, collection of member-ship fees and even other innovative schemes tied up with bowling tournaments and events were also discussed. Details will be worked out by the of-ficers and presented to the general membership body. Finally, as part of Ernee Noto’s mandate to amend UFTBR’s constitution and by-laws, Mr. Al Alfonso was nominated and unanimously voted to head the Constitutional Amendment Committee. Mem-bers of this committee will be handpicked by Mr. Alfonso by January 2011.

UFTBR, BRIEF HISTORYBy Al Alfonso

Special Feature

«True unity can be achieved when each indi-vidual becomes an active and functioning par-ticipant in the whole, performing the skills they possess as constructive and productive con-tributors to a common goal». (Anonymous)

Geographically, the Philippines composed of 7,100 islands. The number perhaps partly ex-plained the political and social divide in our country. Everywhere, in any part of the vast Philippine archipelago, in any city of the world where Filipinos are to be found, and in any ar-eas of their social life, there are bound to be diverse groups not seeing eye- to- eye. Per-sonality differences, family values, regional cultures, and even simple misunderstanding will result in divisions among them. Start any club with a Filipino group and soon there are as many clubs and as many leaders as there could be. Take for example Riyadh, in bowling there are three clubs: Filipino Overseas Bowl-ers of Riyadh [FOBR], Filipino Bowling Group of Riyadh [FBGR], and the Riyadh Tenpin Bowlers Coalition [RTBC].

Unity among Filipinos is probably difficult but the bowlers of Riyadh think it is not impossible to achieve. The Unification Committee com-posed of Ms. Pat Nave, Vic Barrazona, Ernee Noto and Ian Choco succeeded where others before them failed. Under their direction, the leaders of the three bowling clubs in Riyadh:

FOBR, FBGR, and RTBC did the unexpected. They unite and organized the Unified Filipino Tenpin Bowlers of Riyadh. UFTBR is not to be another organization but the union of the three into one umbrella organization. The magic word could be autonomy, that is, while they function as one, they maintain their independence in managing the affairs of their own organization.

On November 08, 2007, the leaders of the three bowling organizations: FOBR, FBGR & RTBC signed a Declaration of Unity. They bind them-selves to work together on behalf of the Filipino bowlers of Riyadh while embracing the auton-omy of one another. An interim body with rep-resentatives from each organization crafted the UFTBR Constitution and By-laws and served as Interim Officers until after a Board of Directors shall be officially installed to take control over the affairs of the UNION

On December 19-21, 2007, UFTBR organized it’s pilot project the 2007 Hajj Goodwill Games at the Universal Bowling Center (UBC) Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In spite of the winter break when majority of the bowlers were on vacation the collective efforts of the three clubs and the un-equivocal support of their respective members ensured the success of the tournament. Thereafter, the annual Hajj Goodwill Games shall always be the “UFTBR Founding Anniver-sary Celebration”. On March 7, 2008, the members of the Board of Directors chaired by Ms. Pat Nave were induct-ed to office at the Universal Bowling Center in a ceremony officiated by the Philippine Embassy Labor Attache, Mr. Resty Dela Fuente. The Unified Filipino Tenpin Bowlers of Riyadh is accredited by the Philippine Embassy in Saudi Arabia as the Umbrella Organization of the Filipino bowling clubs in Riyadh. UFTBR will represent the Filipino Bowlers of Riyadh to any activity related to Tenpin bowling and the only organization recognized to represent Riyadh delegations to regional and international All-Filipino Tenpin Bowling .competitions.

UFTBR Mission and Vision

The Unified Filipino Tenpin Bowlers of Riyadh is organized on a belief to a strong founda-

tion of Unity committed to promote the sports of amateur tenpin bowling among the Overseas Filipino Workers in Riyadh for their physical and psychological wellbeing; to empower its mem-bers to achieve their full potentials and realize their goals for excellence; and to establish an educational and training program and provide a mutually supportive learning environment, in which every member shall have equal opportu-nity to improve their games and develop their competitive skills which in turn foster self-con-fidence, fellowship and goodwill among them.

If uniting the Filipinos is an impossible dream in our country, then UFTBR is trying to break that impasse, make the impossible, possible ….unity ….at least in Riyadh … in Tenpin Bowling.

THE BAROMETER FOR SUCCESS by Dennis Durens

How do we measure success? Skeptics will be

quick to say, success is a fairly relative word, it’s

a moving target. It’s always a lingering notion,

a handy defense mechanism just in case we fall

short or we barely made the passing marks. But

this may be for the fainthearted only, for the me-

diocre, for those among us who would always say

“if it’s not broken don’t fix it”. Simply put, true suc-

cess is achieving something beyond what is ex-

pected, beyond what is called for, it’s something

extraordinary like high impact and breakthrough

performances.

The merger of FOBR and RTBC under the umbrella

of UFTBR is no small feat. This is something that

a lot of well meaning leaders in the bowling com-

munity have aspired and worked hard to achieved.

It’s a milestone; it’s a defining moment and ushers

in a new era. Surely, a lot of members are over-

joyed. But now that it happened, perhaps the big

question is “what now?” Surprisingly, most of us

will be dumbstruck, not even sure of an appropri-

ate answer.

The gesture to select Ernee Noto as the interim

Chairman was magnanimous on the part of the

former leaders of the three organizations to say

the least. It was indeed an appropriate choice, a

smart decision but at the same time a tricky move.

Mr. Ernee Noto is a multi awarded bowler, his pro-

file can be pictured as “achievement” personified.

Together with the sweeping authority given to him

to revitalize the new UFTBR is the implied man-

date saying “Ok Mr. Noto, you are at the helm, take

us where you want to go”. It was a tricky appoint-

ment in a sense, knowing that Ernee will not be

contented with just going through the motions and

maintaining the status quo. Ernee for sure will not

only respond positively to the challenges ahead

but will raise the parallel bar for success a notch

higher, aiming for greater heights.

The tasks at hand for Ernee and his sets of offi-

cers, advisers and support groups, are daunting.

It is also incumbent upon members of UFTBRB to

get involved, to contribute and support whatever

program that the organization will implement. The

true meaning of unity is much more than a con-

vergence of people with similar interests and as-

BOWLING IN A TEAMBy Al Alfonso

“A good team player is like a speck of gold, very precious to find.”My current average is between 165 and 175, which is a great improvement from the 120 in my first bowling session several years ago. Still, it is not good enough to win over the better players of UFTBR. I seldom win in fun and/or pot games where every player put an equal amount in the pot and the winner takes all. Although I am an oddity, being the youngest in terms of playing times but calendar-wise the most senior among what the younger players called the “golden boys”. I am not bothered at all. Instead, I am resolved to improve my games as much as possible. In fact, many times I reached the step-ladder in a monthly final and twice won in the Class C category. I found out that I can keep up and out-bowl many good bowl-ers. It amused me to see younger players finding themselves beaten by the Ka Ely Baraquel and taking their money to boot. Consequently, there is a lot more to learn in bowl-ing than improving your own games. Bowling be-ing a participant sport is played either by bowling in individual competitions or bowling in a team or both. When bowling in a team, you have to under-stand the value of teamwork. Winning or losing is decided not only upon by individual player’s bowling skills but more so on good teamwork or the lack of it. Here are some of the other things I learned by experience, observations, reading and words of mouth from the more advanced bowlers.

Commitment: The cardinal rule of team playing is commitment. Commitment to a team is liken to a marriage vow “till death do us part.” A team player commits himself with his team from the start of the tournament up to the last ball of the last frame of the final game. It doesn’t matter whether the team stands on top or at the bottom of the ladder. A team player will not commit himself with another team in another league scheduled in the same day at the same time. He should be with his team at the bowling lane on or before the match starts. If for some reason he will be late or unable to come, by all means he must call his team captain ahead of time so that he can arrange a substitute to bowl in his place. It is rude to let the team captain pay the full lane fee of a “blind player” and is equally unfair to the team to start the match demoralized..

Trust your team captain and respect his deci-

sions. Do not be offended when at times you will find yourself cooling at the bench, neither be sur-prised to find yourself still playing in spite of your poor performance. In one-day bowling tournament where our PICPA team won the championship, I apologized to Johnny de Asis and Bobby Jamora, for not contributing much. Nap Torres smiles, “it’s team efforts,” he said. “You made us hype the level of our games.” Appreciation: When bowling in a team and in a match even an informal one - a team player must show his appreciation for the team members’ good bowling, their strikes, and their difficult spares or split conversions. There is no thrill greater to a bowler than to receive the applause of his team-mates and opponents alike. Confronted by a wide-open split, whether by skills or luck, converts and helps win the game. A smile, applause, or a word of praise, wins more matches than you may real-ize. In the same way, a good competitor congratu-lates his opponent’s good performance and highly improper to annoy an opposing team with jeering comments on their misses or splits. The best way to upset the opponent is to get a string of strikes for yourself and your team.

Enthusiasm: Many times we watched a game where a team was lagging far behind their oppo-nent. Halfway through the game one player con-verted an almost impossible split that reversed the tide rolling against them. Consequently, his en-thusiasm was so contagious that his teammates started connecting string of strikes of their own. A great number of marks behind began to chop away at the deficit, as the leading team started to try harder and invariably lose some of its lead and squeezed out in the tenth frame. “Strike or spare to win”, the decider sometimes is left on how the anchor players roll their last balls in the last frame.

Control your emotion: It is most important for a bowler in a team to realize that he is not the only one interested on how well or how badly he bowls. Just as his enthusiasm inspires, his exhibition of temper demoralizes. It is a proven fact that bowl-ing like any game of skill is flavored with good luck and counterbalanced by bad luck. When you have a run of bad luck, control your emotion. Be patient. Sooner or later, you will get that lucky hit in between two strikes and “steal a triple,” or three strikes in a row and sometimes more.

News Editorial Five Baggers

Advices/Suggestions: I always welcome ad-vices and appreciate suggestions on improving my games. However, for the very reason of self-interest in bowling, bowlers normally do not of-fer free advice to any bowler before he asked for it. Even when bowling in a team, teammates don’t make suggestions to another team mem-ber, unless expressly requested. The reason is that the bowler who is bowling badly becomes more confused than ever when criticism or sug-gestions for correction is offered. Probably he has already made several attempts at correct-ing himself, and on top of his correction, per-haps a radically different one is offered. Pos-sibly and ironically, the offered correction could be entirely wrong. The best advice, if advice must be given, is “take your time,” which really is more of a psychological correction; a good advice no matter how bad he is doing.

Bowling Etiquettes: There are unwritten code of ethics based on everyday rule of common po-liteness and common courtesy to be observed not only for your teammates but for the oppo-nents alike. Remember that one or more of the opposing team players are your opponent now but your teammates in another league. (kalaban ngayon, kakampi bukas).

Finally, play to win but be gracious if you are on the short end of the score. “Modest in victory and gracious in defeat,” is a good motto.

PHYSICAL GAME DEVELOPMENT -A FIVE-PART SKILL PROGRESSION By Vic Barrazona

Coaches’ Eye

I feel honored and privileged to have been given a column on instructional matters by the prime mov-ers of this newsletter. I hope I can provide relevant bowling related information to UFTBR members.

In the last quarter of 2009, we have seen an in-crease in new and beginning bowlers joining our bowling community here in Riyadh. UFTBR responded to this observation by providing free bowling training for beginners. Early this year, 14 new bowlers completed the 1st batch of the “UFT-BR Training Program for Beginners”. In November 2010, we have started with the 2nd batch of train-ees, composed of 7 women and 6 men.

The UFTBR coaching team is initially composed of Ernee Noto, Jojo Bulan and yours truly. Jojo has left the kingdom and in his place is Celis Viloria who also has some bowling training experiences in Cebu, Philippines. Although we may have differ-ent coaching know-how, at UFTBR training pro-gram we are strictly following the USBC coaching standards.

The question that may be asked by our bowlers and those who are also into teaching our fellow bowlers here in Riyadh is: “How do we develop the physical game of a bowler?”

“Success in the physical game lies with the athlete and the bowling ball moving together as one and

not against one another. Maintaining balance and developing flow throughout the entire process are key elements to mastering the game.

If the ball and the body are out of sync and moving in different directions, the body will adjust to the forces that a ‘ball in motion’ exerts. In this situa-tion, the body will work unnecessarily hard to de-liver the ball. As the body continuously adjusts to these forces, these questions must be asked: ‘Is the athlete bowling the ball?’ or ‘Is the ball bowling the athlete?’” ~ USBC Coaching

The “Coach’s Eye” Concept

Without a process or a system to review what a bowler is doing, it will be overwhelming difficult to assimilate so much information at one time. The “coach’s eye” concept, introduced by former Team USA Head Coach Fred Borden, breaks down the process of analyzing a bowler’s delivery into four reference points:•Waist down: foot placement, knees and hips•Waist up: spine, shoulders, head and eyes•Ball Position: height and position side-to-side•Hand Position: grip (position of fingers and thumb)

At USBC Coaching Certification Program, we are taught to first teach the athlete to establish a bal-anced finish position at the foul line. From this bal-

anced position, it is important that athlete main-tain balance as they deliver the ball.

The five-part skill progression includes:1.Pee Wee two-handed delivery2.Staggered stance without a push away3.Staggered stance with a push away4.On-step delivery5.Four-step delivery

In the next issues, I will be discussing in details what I have presented above. Throughout this topic, I will be quoting some reference materials I used in my USBC Coaching Certification Program to emphasize or substantiate my points. I may also be inviting guest coaches from international arena to grace my column. (to be continued in the next issue of PointShots…..)

BOWL FOR HEALTHby Lulu Quejada

Among the large number of sports that humans have created and played, bowling is quite prob-ably the most popular to play and longest lived. The sport has more than 50 million people in U.S. alone. It is definitely a sport that is much more popular to be played than most others. While football, baseball, and basketball are ex-tremely popular to watch, the truth of the matter is once we are out of college, most of us are not playing these sports. The best part about bowling is that it offers health benefits to those who play regularly. The health benefits of bowl-ing can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. These include a lot more than simply building up your bowling stamina or releasing your energy. For the people who are oblivious to the health ben-efits of bowling, here is just a few:

Clean Game

HEALTH BENEFITS OF BOWLING:

One of the things most bowlers do, and is highly recommend, is to warm up and stretch before bowling. Just like any stretching exercise, this is great for the body. Even doing this exercise once a week is a great health benefit to you. This works joints, tendons, ligaments and mus-clesBowling helps promote excellent muscle exer-cises. Just walking around in the bowling alley, and along the lane in the process of trying to get yourself a strike or spare, you will be doing enough exercise for the muscles in your legs

to get a small workout. This exercise is some-thing like the walking exercise which a lot of people perform and the only difference between the two is that in the case of a bowler’s a little extra weight is involved. This is because while bowling, your hands are holding the bowling ball whereas while doing the walking exercise you are carrying nothing. Further, when you are swinging your arm to throw the bowling ball, the stretching and flexing that occurs provides enough exercise for the tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints in your arms.

Bowling can burn off calories quickly while having fun!

Bowling helps burn fat. As you flex your mus-cles with every twisting, swinging and turning motion that you perform while you are bowling you can actually find yourself burning a little bit of the excess body fat you have accumulated over the years. Depending on how much you weigh and how much effort you use, a game of bowling can burn anywhere from 170 to 300 calories.

Bowling can help you to make new friends. One of the best health benefits that bowling offers is that you get to develop a lot of new relation-ships with other people on the bowling lanes as well as improve relationships with the other members of your family and even your friends. There are quite a few psychologists that rec-ommend building more friendships with differ-ent people as this has been shown to improve the performance of your heart muscles and in-crease your longevity. If you are suffering from emotional stress then you can severely shorten your lifespan and cause harm to your body. Thus, you should build your friendships and en-joy yourself a lot.

Aside from helping you stay fit, bowling is a great way to interact with friends and meet new people!

There is of course no other way for a person to have fun and enjoy himself or herself while being able to maintain a healthy life quite like bowling. This is a sport that is not too hard on your muscles but does not let you rest for too long either. Now, bowling once a month is prob-ably not going to be that much of a health ben-efit to you. You need to bowl regularly. Joining a bowling league is a great way to make sure you are at least bowling weekly. Getting a few practices in during the week is always a good idea too, and will help you improve your bowl-ing game.

Have fun and enjoy the health benefits of bowl-ing!

STRESS: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY by Bella Sabico

Clean Game

tations such as age and existing medical con-ditions in order to get the best results. Mental stress is another form of good stress as it keeps our brain active, decreasing our chances of short term memory, and improves over-all pro-ductivity. “Growing pains” is a kind of emotional stress encountered by the younger generation that is also considered beneficial as it awakens personal wisdom and maturity to handle situa-tions similar to that of normal adults.

The bad stress - Over-eating is consid-ered a bad stress. By taking more than what our body can absorb, we disturb the normal diges-tion process which, on a long term basis, will definitely lead to unnecessary weight gain. It usually comes with another bad stress, lazi-ness. The idea of choosing not to be physically active anymore after working hours while at the same time over feeding ourselves is one of the unhealthiest decisions that can lead to compli-cations later on. Unhealthy and addicting hab-its such as chronic alcohol consumption and smoking are just two of those self-indulging be-haviors that hurt our chances of having a long and healthy life.

Stress, in its most common definition, is any disturbance that can cause disorder in a nor-mally functioning system. We have of course experienced different kinds of stress at this stage in our lives. By knowing the difference, we eventually develop the wisdom on how to handle it. In this short essay I will focus on those types of stress that needs to be maintained, and those that should be avoided in order to main-tain a healthy and sound mind.

The good stress - Physical activity be-longs to the roster of good stress. By introduc-ing “good pain”, we improve our circulation and maintain optimum performance of our muscles. While granted that any physical activity can significantly increase our vitality and youth, it is also important to consider our personal limi-

The ugly stress - Chronic emotional stress in adults may not only lead to depres-sion, it can lead to suicide as well. But that’s only on the individual level. On a larger scale, an individual exposed to chronic emotional stress can become a burden to the society that can potentially harm existing peace and order. Another ugly stress on medical terms is chronic over eating and sedentary lifestyle. While most think it will only lead to being obese, it actu-ally is a breeding ground for most of the chronic non-communicable diseases we know as of today: diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart at-tacks and even cancer. On a lighter note, this type of stress can lead to premature aging, which by all means, is ugly.

What I have mentioned were just general types. Stress by its fullest definition can be anything under the sun. Over all, we can barely control the types of stress that is being introduced to us. While most of them can be prevented through proper self care, some just needs to be managed with mature thinking and basic com-mon sense. The best way to solve the bad and the ugly stress (especially chronic emotional stress) is to acknowledge that they do exist and are a part of our everyday lives that makes us who we are now. Everything just needs to be balanced. As such, it is important that we stay positive emotionally, mentally and physically, which makes sense why those who can keep themselves in such a state are the same per-sons who have lived the longest

House Ball— Members’ Corner by Bong Solomon

BRENDA BALTAZAR SERAFICO

Everybody in the bowling community call her “Beybs”or to some friends of hers, Bren. She was born in Olongapo City, Zambales on the 27th of December. She’s married to Joselito “Fykes”Serafico and they have four (4) chil-dren namely: Anne (20), Allen (18), Alyssa (14) and Aiden (3). She’s a Proprietress-Networker of First Vitaplus and also a personality devel-opment consultant (online). Her full name is Brenda Baltazar Serafico, a pretty good bowler who started bowling in 2006 but had to stop a year after due to pregnancy and to give way to motherhood responsibilities. She returned to the sport in 2008 and has been an avid bowler since then, picking up awards and accolades along the way. According to her, a bowler should behave like a “true sportsman” and show common courtesies and respect to co-bowlers. She believes that for recreational bowlers, hav-ing polite manners on or off the lanes and ob-serving good bowling etiquette at all times is equally important to getting high scores or be-ing desired as a teammate. She also believes that in order to achieve one’s goal, there must be desire, motivation and “continuous learning”, aside from natural abilities.

MIKE MIRANDA

He looks just like an ordinary new kid in the block, an odd young face among the mostly ma-tured mix of bowlers. But make no mistake; this young bowler has started to make an impact at his young age, showing his mettle by winning the Master’s event in the recently concluded 2010 Hajj Goodwill Games at Universal Bowl-ing Center (UBC). His name is Michael Anthony P. Miranda or Mike for short, born October 9, 1992 in the province of Bulacan. He is 18 years of age and currently studying at Second Philip-pines International School (SPIS), as a college freshman taking up Information Technology.

He started bowling when he was only in third grade with the help of his Tito Aldrin Alvarado as coach. But being young back then, his focus was not on bowling and dabbled in other sports activities like tennis and basketball. He went back to bowling sometime in April of this year and this time, he wanted to do it right. He sought the help of UFTBR head coach Vic Barrazona and other seasoned Riyadh bowlers and in such a short time Mike was able to polish his game to a high level. Mike was selected as one of Riyadh’s delegate in the annual GCC Bowling event held in Qatar last September 2010.

Mike humbly considers himself still a newbie and the only thing that he can share especially to the young ones who want to try bowling as their sport, is to be focused and confident, to al-ways give their best every time they play, and to have faith in God that will always be there to help and guide us at all times.

ABE ABULENCIA

His full name is Mr. Bernabe Garcia Abulencia, but he simply known as “Abe” in the bowling community. Abe is married to a fellow bowler, Prima Abulencia and they have two (2) children who are now staying in the Philippines. Their son, Carlo Abulencia, was once a champion bowler with the class C division when he was still in Riyadh. Abe was formerly connected with STC and is now currently working as a Plant Supervisor with Thales International.

Born on October 5 in Calasiao, Pangasinan, Abe has been a bowler for a long time (25 years experience and still counting), dating back from 1985 when he started playing the sport in Rab-wah Bowling Center (RBC), then the only bowl-ing venue in Riyadh. He was a member of the first bowling group of Riyadh called “Filipino Tenpin Bowlers of Riyadh” and is currently a member of good standing of UFTBR. He fondly remembers his long time teammates in the pe-rennial champion team of Philippine Embassy namely, Sultan Alawi, Jett Cabana (both active) and Hassan Cali. According to his wife Prima, Abe was already a duckpin bowler of the PLDT team when he was still in the Philippines, hence his favorite saying, “once a bowler, always a bowler” aptly describes his love of the sport.

16

RICA VENTURA

Rica Ventura is another young UFTBR breed player with potential. Rica is the eldest daughter of bowler parents, Ric and Jenny Ventura. She is 14 years of age, and is currently a 2nd year high school student at Aldanah International School in Riyadh. She was born in the City of Manila on the 8th day of December 1996. She had 2 siblings namely Ameer and Regina ages 8 and 6 years respectively.

Rica was a member of the first batch of trainees in the UFTBR’s beginners program held last October 2009. She now plays regularly in UFTBR’s bowl-ing leagues when her school schedules allow.

BETH DANGANAN

Beth as she is popularly and fondly called is one of UFTBR’s veteran and most reliable lady bowlers. Her full name is ELIZABETH MEJICO DANGANAN and she is a nurse by profession, currently working at the Riyadh Military Hospi-tal – Airbase Clinic (known as RKH). Beth has been with RKH for about 26 years, she quips “hopefully I will continue to work there until I retire”. Beth is also a December birthday cele-brant (Dec. 22), and she hails from Salacot, San Miguel, Bulacan. It will not be difficult to notice Beth, aside from her height (which is above the average Filipina), she is a person with a jolly disposition and wears a smiling face most of

the time. Beth is also very enterprising and she usually roams and prowls the bowling al-leys mixing the pleasure of bowling with a wide range of personal businesses.

Beth started bowling ten (10) years ago just as a form of relaxation. But then she got hooked to the sport and she has rose to one of UFTBR’s top ranked bowler since then. Beth has practi-cally reaped all sorts of awards and citations in the Riyadh bowling league circuit and is a con-sistent member of the Riyadh bowling delega-tion to the annual GCC tournament.

UFTBR›s noteworthy program of training new bowlers and instilling the correct fundamentals of playing the game right from the start was launched on Oc-tober 3, 2009 with an initial batch of 12 participants (see photo below). The key objective of implementing the training program is to fast track basic bowling skill development for new bowlers to allow them to participate in UFTBR’s bowling tournament especially the ladies bowling league since the number of lady bowlers have been significantly depleted through the years.

The skill sets being taught fall within four (4) key categories of the sport of bowling, namely (a) the Physical game, (b) Equipment, (c) Lane Play and (d) the Mental Game. UFTBR’s training team is led by the Head Coach, Mr. Vic Barrazona, a seasoned bowler (2009 Ramadan Goodwil Games Masters Champion, 2010 Philippines Independentce Day Cup Singles Event and All Events Champion) who is also an internationally accredited bowling coach and trainer. Vic is supported by Ernee Noto and Celis Viloria.

Almost all of the graduates from the first batch are now active regular league bowlers with, one notable graduate, Cheng Lambo, now a rated bowler having won several awards and citations, with the most recent, achieving 4th runner up in the Masters Event in the 2010 Haj Goodwill Games. Mike Miranda, the champion of the Men’s Masters Event in the same event is also a special protégé of Vic Barrazona.

Meanwhile, the 2nd batch of training is now on-going with 13 participants. There is also a plan to conduct an “Advanced Training” level which is eagerly anticipated by many UFTBR members. However. according to Coach Vic Barrazona, the main constraint at the moment is the lack of qualified trainers. At present there are just three trainers namely: Ernee Noto, Celis Viloria and the Head Coach, Vic Barrazona. A “Train the Trainors” program therefore is being contemplated to augment the number of trainers and coaches. This will allow the training team to conduct simultaneous training programs at various levels.

ANSWER TO BOWL QUIZ1 Answer: 10 / Though in the US the most common form of bowling involves 10 pins, there are many variations that are played with different amount

2 Answer: 15 Inches / The USBC also states that pins are to be spaced 12 inches apart measuring from the center of one to the center of the other

3 Answer: 16 lbs / The standard ball can weigh no more than 16 lbs and to have a smooth surface

4 Answer: Stepping over the line at the top of the lane / Only if you release the ball otherwise it is not considered a foul though not recommended

5 Answer: Spare / Even though you knocked down all the pins, its still a spare because a strike is earned by knocking down all pins with just one ball

6 Answer: 9 / Standard 10-pin bowling is played with ten rounds or frames, however two extra balls are earned if you bowl a strike in the 10th frame

7 Answer: Split / A split is where all pins left standing are non-adjacent (not side by side), the 7-10 split is the most difficult to hit

8 Answer: Turkey / Hambone and clover would be getting four strikes in a row and a Tap is a type of spare

9 Answer: All / Though true definition is not bowling a spare or strike in a frame, all these are acceptable as you would not score with 2 fouls or 2 gutter balls

10 Answer: 12 / You would bowl 12 strikes because you get 2 extra balls if you bowl a strike in the tenth frame

LADIES PERSPECTIVE, CHOICES & VOICES

Riyadh Ladies Bowling League was founded in year 1989; it is the longest running league at the Al Khozama Bowling Center.

Why do we bowl? Why do we keep going back to bowling centers? Why don›t we mind spending? Some say, they go to a bowling center to play for fun, to feel the challenge of the game, feel the ac-complishment of scoring high games. For others, they go to bowling centers because it makes them feel good being in a friendly environment, they feel relaxed after a stressful day at work talking to friends.

Stress can wear down our mind & body; causing mood fluctuation, insomnia, mental & physical fa-tigue sometimes leading to depression, thus inner and outer beauty depletes. Thanks to bowling. Bowling is not only playing the game, it is a means of binding bowlers into a community, caring for one another, threading mutual assistance and inspiring others. Nothing could be more relaxing than being in a friendly place after a hard day at work; particularly where mavens & beauties assemble at the Bowling Centers.

Meaningful ThoughtsA long and happy life is the result of making contributions, of having mean-ingful mission that are personally exciting and contribute to and bless the lives of others.» Hans Selye
