Abstract The activities of the New York Boycott office focused on the national consumer boycotts of California table grapes and lettuce initiated by UFWOC in 1967 and 1971 respectively. The boycotts were in support of striking California farm workers seeking union recognition under the leadership of Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and the UFW (successor name beginning in 1973). The records consist of files from various New York boycott offices that include: New York City, Buffalo, Brooklyn and a few others. These records highlight the activities of the New York boycott coordinators efforts to publicize the California farm worker’s strike and boycott. The papers of the New York Boycott office of the United Farm Workers Organi- zing Committee, (successor name UFW by 1973), were deposited with the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in 1970 by Andy Imutan. Subsequent shipments were deposited in 1973, 1975, 1977 and 1979 by the New York Boycott offices.

The activities of the New York Boycott office focused on the national consumer boycotts of California table grapes and lettuce initiated by UFWOC in 1967 and 1971 respectively. The boycotts were in support of striking California farm workers seeking union recognition under the leadership of Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and the UFW.

In August 1967 the boycott was directed against the Giumarra Corporation California's largest table grape grower. In 1968 the UFWOC launched a boy- cott of all California table grapes because of the mislabeling practices of Giumarra. In 1970 the lettuce crop was the target of the UFW’s boycott.

New York was the key city of the grape boycott inasmuch as it was Giumarra's largest market through its agent, Dan Joseph of Victor Joseph & Son. In January, 1968 the New York Boycott office headed by Delores Huerta, Vice Presi- dent of the UFWOC, with branches in the New York area, organized a letter writing campaign directed against Giumarra, Joseph and 30 other struck growers. The office also enlisted volunteers to check and picket chain stores and fruit- stands carrying boycotted grapes.

Part 1 covers the period 1965-1970, with material principally confined to the years 1967-1970. Part 2 covers the period 1967-1979 and covers both the grape and lettuce boycotts with various growers.
