WELCOME TO KINESIOLOGY

Atpresent thereareclose to1,000undergraduate studentsenrolled in theKinesiologyMajor,which isdesigned toprovidea“well-rounded,scholarlyunderstandingofthebodyofknowledgethatiscenteredonhumanmovementandphysicalactivity.”
InstructioninKinesiologyaddresseshistorical,cultural,developmental,andbiophysicalbasesforqualityparticipationinmovementactivities,withapplicationstosport,physicalactivities,injury,andwellnessforpeopleofallages.Studentsareexpectedtodevelopanunderstandingofhowhumanmovementoccurs,thefactorsthatdirectlyorindirectlyinfluencemovement,andthebenefitsofamovement-orientedlifestyle.
CAREERS IN KINESIOLOGY
ThecurriculumoftheKinesiologyMajorpermitsstudentstopursueavarietyofcareersrelatedtosport,physicalactivityandhumanmovement.
Many of ourmajors are interested in careers related to fitness (personal training, corporate fitness, performancetraining,conditioning,wellness,athleticdirector)andmedicalfields(physician,physicianassistant,physicaltherapy,occupationaltherapy,athletictraining,chiropractic,cardiacrehabilitation,motordevelopment,biomedicalandotherresearchspecializations).
Otherstudentsareinterestedinsports-relatedcareers(sportpsychology,sportphysiology,sporthistory,sportsociology,sportmanagement,publicrelationsandsportjournalism).
StudentstypicallychooseKinesiologybecausetheylikesportsandphysicalactivity,andwanttomakeadifferenceinpeople'slives.Resources:

KINESIOLOGY DEGREE COMPETENCIES
1. Studentswillinterpret,synthesize,andcriticallyanalyzeresearchunderlyingthekinesiologicaldimensionsofphysicalactivityandhealth.
2. Studentswilldevelopprincipledreasoningskillsnecessarytoapplyandextendkinesiologyknowledgetoaddressproblemsthatarerelevanttophysicalactivityandthehealthofdiversepopulations.
3. Studentswillintegrate,interrogate,andcommunicatetheconnectionbetweenthescholarshipofkinesiologyandthegoalsofpublichealth.

FamilyEducationRightsandPrivacyAct(FERPA)isaFederallawthatprotectsastudent’sprivacyinterestinhisorher“educationrecords.”FERPAsaysthattheUniversityofMarylandmaydiscloseeducationrecords,orpersonallyidentifiableinformationfromsuchrecords,onlytouniversityofficialswhohavebeendeterminedtohavelegitimateeducationalinterests.
Thisinformationmayalsobereleasedifastudenthasprovidedwrittenconsent. IntheSchoolofPublicHealth,wetakeFERPAveryseriouslyasitisourjobtoprotectyourrightsasastudent. Pre-Physical Therapy Association (PPTA) The Pre-Physical Therapy Association is a student organization that is directed towards students who areseekingacareerorare interested inphysical therapy.Thisorganization isdesignedtopreparestudentsforentrance intoaprofessionalcurriculumforPhysicalTherapyat institutionsthatofferprofessionaladvanceddegrees. Our goal is to be an effective organization that guides its members to become competitivecandidates for PT school. We prepare our members by organizing meetings regarding GREs, PT schoolapplications,resumes,communityservice,differentpathsinthePTfield,plusmuchmore.

PhiAlphaEpsilon (PAE) is a localhonorary societyopen toundergraduateandgraduate students in FamilyStudies, Health, Kinesiology, & Physical Education.The organization was founded in the fall of 1952 bystudents and faculty of the college thatwould recognize academic achievement and promote professionaldevelopment.Membersmakeacommitmenttoprovideservicetothecollege,university,andcommunity.

ProfessionalWriting(PW)–1course,3creditsENGL39_must be completed with a grade of “C-“or better and after 60 credits. UniversityPolicy
FundamentalMathandAcademicWritingmustbeattemptedbythetimethestudenthasreachedthe30-creditlevelandmustbesuccessfullycompletedbythetimethestudenthasreachedthe60-creditlevel.Studentswhodon’tfulfillthispolicywillhavearegistrationblockintheiraccountandcanonlyregisterforclassesthattheregistrar’soffice.
AfterastudentisadmittedatUMDtheFundamentalStudiesRequirementsmustbecompletedatUMD.
Distributive Studies [DS] (8 courses, 25 credits) DistributiveStudiescoursesexpose students toavarietyofdisciplinesevenas theyconcentrateonachosen fieldofstudy. Kinesiologymajor requirements that have been evaluated in one ormore distributive studies (DS) categoriescan be used to fulfill DS requirements. KNESPhysicalActivitycoursesdonothaveprerequisites.Studentsshouldchooseanactivitycoursebasedontheirpastexperiencesandabilitytoperformaspecificphysicalactivityorsport. Studentsmustfulfillthisrequirementthroughcourses.Currentorpastparticipationinathletics,coaching,militaryoranyexperiencewithsportorphysicalactivitycannotbeusedtofulfillthisrequirement.
AttendancePolicy:Studentsmustattendthefirstdayofclasses.KNESPhysicalActivitiesincludeastrongpracticumcomponent.Studentsmustbeabletofullyparticipateinclasstopassthecourse.Themaximumnumberofabsencesis3forthe7-weekcoursesand5forfullsemestercourses.Absencesexceedingthislimitwillresultinagradeof"F".
Awidevarietyofcoursesatboththebeginningandmoreadvancedlevelsareofferedeverysemester.Thenumberofcreditsvariesbasedonthenumberofhoursperweekandlengthofthecourse.Someactivitycoursesareonlyofferedforhalfofsemester.ONLYONEACTIVITYCOURSESCANBECOMPLETEDOUTSIDEOFKNESdepartment.

KNES HONORS PROGRAM TheDepartmentofKinesiologyHonorsProgramprovidesanopportunityforstudentstoengageinchallengingeducationalexperiencesrelatedtothestudyofhumanmovement,sport,andexercise.Studentswithstrongintellectualinterestsandtheabilitytopursuethoseinterestsatahighlevelareeligibleforthisprogram.ItisthegoaloftheHonorsProgramtonurturethesestudentsandencouragethemtopursuetheirinterestsinarangeofintellectualtopics.TheHonorsProgramintheDepartmentofKinesiologyisprimarilydesignedforjuniorandseniorlevelstudentstoencouragethemtoengageinscholarlyindependentstudyanddiscussions.
