SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

TheRtHonMattHancockMP,(MinisterofStateforDigital)Matt Hancock is the MP for West Suffolk, having been elected in the 2010 general election and he is also the Minister of State for Digital. From 2010 Matt served as a backbencher on the Public Accounts Committee and the Standards & Privileges Committee. Matt entered Government in September 2012 and has served in a number of Ministerial Roles, including for skills and business, and as Paymaster General. He oversaw the expansion of apprenticeships, and championed the digital transformation of Government.

Since July 2016 he has served at DCMS as Minister of State for Digital and is responsible for broadband, broadcasting, creative industries, cyber and the tech industry. Before entering politics, Matt worked for his family business, as an economist at the Bank of England, and as Chief of Staff to the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. He holds degrees from Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

RussellHaworth,Nominet(CEO)Russell is leading Nominet as it builds on its expertise running and protecting the .UK internet infrastructure to help the public sector and corporations understand their networks and mitigate security threats. Russell is a keen observer of global internet trends and new technologies with the potential to transform how we work, interact and live.

GordonMorrison,McAfeeUK(DirectorofGovernmentRelations)Gordon has over 25 years of experience in UK public sector and government security. He spent the early part of his career as an engineer and scientist in the Ministry of Defence but subsequently worked in technical and senior management roles for EDS, Detica and Steria mainly on National Security, Cyber and Defence programmes. Before joining McAfee two years ago, he was a Director at the UK Trade Association for technology – techUK.

RichardHolmes,CGICyber-SecureSystems(SecureSystemsEngineeringDirector)Richard leads the UK cyber security systems engineering team at CGI. Previously, Richard was responsible for the development of significant elements of CGI’s cyber business in the UK National Security Sector. He has over 20 years’ experience in the development and provision of secure IT systems and capabilities.

DrBobNowill,Cyber-SecurityChallengeUK(Chairman)Bob is Chair of The Board at The Cyber Security Challenge UK Ltd, and an independent security Consultant Director and Advisor through Herne Hill Consulting Ltd. He is also the Chair of the Institute of Information Security Professionals (IISP) Accreditation Committee. He is a member of the Digital Trust Advisory Board at PA Consulting Group Ltd.

He was the Director for Cyber and Assurance at BT until the end of 2013. Before joining BT in 2005, Bob was the Director of Technology & Engineering and Board Member at the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and held a number of other roles there before that. His career has also included periods with UK MoD (Defence Procurement Agency and Research Agencies), in The Netherlands with The SHAPE Technical Centre, and research at Cambridge University Engineering Department. Bob is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered IT Professional, a Fellow of the IET and of the BCS, and a Founder Fellow of the Institute of Information Security Professionals (IISP).

Prof.ChristopherHankin,ImperialCollegeLondon(DirectoroftheInstitutefor SecurityScienceandTechnology)Chris Hankin is Director of the Institute for Security Science and Technology and a Professor of Computing Science. He was Deputy Principal of the Faculty of Engineering from September 2006 until October 2008. He was Pro Rector (Research) from June 2004 until September 2006. He was Dean of City and Guilds College from 2000-2003. His research is in cyber security, data analytics and semantics-based programme analysis.

RichardHorne,PwC(Cyber-SecurityLead)Richard Horne is a cyber security partner at PwC. Prior to joining PwC, Richard was Managing Director of Cyber Security for Barclays PLC. Whilst at Barclays, Richard was seconded to the UK Cabinet Office in 2011, to help shape and drive the national plan for cyber security – both across government and the wider economy. He serves on a number of advisory boards for academic institutions and technology start-up companies.

Richard holds a PhD in Mathematics from Royal Holloway, University of London, and has represented the UK on security matters to the OECD, the European Commission and the International Standards Organisation.

HannahBroadbent,Childnet(DeputyCEO)Hannah has been with Childnet since 2011, leading on the charity’s communications, campaigns, policy, research, evaluation and fundraising activities. She plays a key role in Childnet’s work as one of three charities in the UK Safer Internet Centre coordinating the Safer Internet Day campaign.

Hannah also contributes to Childnet’s education and youth participation projects, helping to launch the Childnet Digital Leaders Programme and coordinating Childnet’s Youth Internet Governance Forum Project for several years. Hannah sits on Facebook’s Safety Advisory Board and the Evidence Group of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety, and regularly speaks in the media and at national and international events.

Outside of Childnet, Hannah is the Chair of Trustees for a local volunteering charity, the Volunteer Centre Hackney. She has wide experience in working with young people, having worked in both education and charity settings, and as a trained youth worker.

Hannah holds a first class degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oxford, where she worked as a Research Assistant and conducted research with young people.

SophieLinington,ParentZone(DeputyCEO)Sophie Linington is Deputy CEO at Parent Zone where she has worked for just over 10 years. Sophie manages the Digital Schools and Digital Resilience membership programmes and develops training strategy ensuring that professionals are best supported to engage with parents and children’s online resilience. She sits on the UKCCIS Education Working Group and manages a number of projects including Resilient Families, a programme for parents, professionals and schools funded by the Home Office Prevent Innovation Fund.

MarkWood,Nominet(Chair)Alongside his role as Chair of Nominet, Mark currently chairs educational content business Knowledge Motion. He is an advisor to Ascension Ventures, and sits on PwC’s Advisory Board and the Board of Citywire.

Prior roles included Chair & CEO of ITN, Chief Executive of Future PLC, and Chair of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. Mark began his career in journalism as a foreign correspondent for Reuters, before becoming the company’s Editor-in-Chief. He was also a member of the Reuters PLC Board. Mark read languages at Leeds and Warwick and holds a diploma in education from Oxford University.

ChiOnwurahMP(ShadowMinisterforIndustrialStrategy)After graduating from university in 1986, Ms Onwurah worked as an engineer in the UK, France, the US, Nigeria and Denmark. Her expertise was in “building out infrastructure in new markets and standardising wholesale Ethernet access”. Through her work, she helped to bring wireless technology to Nigeria and South Africa. Immediately prior to entering Parliament, she was Head of International Technology Strategy for Ofcom.

After leaving school, she studied at Imperial College, London and became a Chartered Engineer. Later, she received an MBA from Manchester Business School. She joined the Labour Party at the age of 16, and was active in the Anti Apartheid movement, spending many years in the National Executive.

CarlMiller,Demos(ResearchDirector)Carl is writing his first book, ‘Power’, on how power is changing in the digital age, published by William Heinemann in Spring 2018.He founded the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media at the UK think tank Demos, a team dedicated to researching digital society. He’s written reports on conspiracy theories, digital literacy, digital politics, online hate and digital democracy, and is a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London.

PratapTambe,TataConsultancyServices(BusinessDevelopmentManager)Pratap Tambe has 20+ years of experience in IT services for a global customer base including 6+ years of experience in the London Insurance Market. He is well known for his LinkedIn articles and public speaking on London Market TOM, Blockchains and Catastrophe Modelling. He led TCS’ contributions to the London Market TOM consultation which has been incorporated into the London Market TOM blueprint. His 2015 description of how commercial insurance industry could leverage private Blockchains has proven quite accurate and his 2017 view of why B3i should not use private blockchains has also been widely appreciated including B3i stakeholders. He is actively evangelising big data and machine learning technologies to transform exposure data capture and transformation as well as multi-model catastrophe modelling and spoke on this topic recently at the Lloyds Old Library.

NatalieCampbell,NominetTrust(Chair)Natalie was appointed Chair of Trustees in November 2016. A career-long champion of the idea that entrepreneurship drives social mobility, Natalie is the founder of A Very Good Company - a social innovation agency that works with businesses such as Marks and Spencer and Virgin Media to deliver social impact around the world.

Natalie is also a board member of the Big Lottery Fund and UnLtd, The Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs and was previously on the board of Wayra UnLtd - the Tech for Good accelerator backed by O2 Telefonica and the Cabinet Office.

SusieHargreavesOBE,InternetWatchFoundation(CEO)Susie joined the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) in September 2011 as Chief Executive. She has worked in the charity sector for more than 25 years in a range of senior positions.

Susie is a Director of the UK Safer Internet Centre. She is also a member of the NCA CEOP Command Strategic Governance Group; the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Child Online Protection Working Group; a Steering Group Member of UK IGF; an Advisory Group member of Stop it Now! and a member of the BBFC’s Consultative Council. She’s also an Executive Board member of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) and a member of the “WeProtect Global Alliance” International Advisory Board.

Susie is a Clore Fellow and was a finalist for a European Woman of Achievement Award in 2004 and PA Magazine’s ‘Best Boss of 2014’. She was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2016 for ‘Services to Child Online Safety’. Susie was a finalist in the Executive of the Year 2017 category in the internet’s most prestigious industry awards in the UK, the ISPA Awards.

AdamPeake,ICANN(SeniorManager,Accountability)Adam is responsible for ICANN’s relations with civil society organisations, including academia, and supporting non-commercial participation in ICANN’s multi-stakeholder model. Before joining ICANN in December 2014, Adam spent more than two decades as a senior researcher at the Center for Global Communications (GLOCOM), International University of Japan, where he worked on projects related to telecommunications and Internet policy. Adam has been active in policy-making activities for the deployment and development of the Internet since the early-1990s. He was one of the lead civil society representatives during the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and NETmundial.

External to ICANN, Adam is a Senior Visiting Researcher, Keio International Center for Internet and Society, Keio University, Tokyo, Japan, and Associate Executive Research Fellow, Center for Global Communications (GLOCOM), International University of Japan, Tokyo, Japan.

DrRachelO’Connell,TheTrustBridge(FounderandCEO)Dr Rachel O’Connell is one of the preeminent authorities on electronic identification and age verification and is the author of a technical standard entitled PAS 1296 Age Checking code of practice, which will be published by the British Standards Institution in April 2017. Rachel was the fifth person to join the start-up social networking platform, Bebo, and was instrumental in operationally building the business, which was acquired by AOL in 2008 for $850M. Before joining Bebo, Rachel led a series of highly successful large-scale Pan-European projects, which involved managing teams located in 19 countries across Europe. In 2000, Rachel set up the Cyberspace Research Unit, at the University of Central Lancashire and secured funding from the European Commission to establish and operate the first UK Internet Safety Centre (2000- 2006), which was based at the Cyberspace Research Unit. Rachel’s PhD examined the implications of online paedophile activity for investigative strategies.

SimonMilner,Facebook(PolicyDirectorforUK,MiddleEastandAfrica)Simon Milner is Facebook’s Policy Director for UK, Middle East, Africa and Turkey. He is responsible for representing the company on issues such as privacy, safety, security and internet access. He joined the company in January 2012. He is a Board member of the Family Online Safety Institute and is a Director of the Tinder Foundation. He previously held senior roles with BT, most recently as Director for Group Industry Policy, where he was responsible for policy development, articulation and advocacy on communications industry issues. Before BT he worked for the BBC including holding the position of Secretary, responsible for the Corporation’s governance and accountability.

DesireeMiloshevic,Afilias(SeniorAdvisorofInternationalAffairsandPublicPolicy)Ms Miloshevic served as Special Advisor to the Chair of the United Nations’ Internet Governance Forum Multistakeholder Advisory Group from 2006 to 2009. More recently she participated in the ITU’s WCIT-12 as part of the UK government delegation on behalf of the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, where she was a Visiting Associate from 2008-2009 and 2011-2012 and joined the UK Multistakeholder Advisory Group on Internet governance, MAGIG in 2013. She co-chaired the Internet Society Advisory Council of Organizational members and is currently active in both ISOC England UK and Belgrade Chapter. She is a Chairman of the Board of DoMen d.o.o. and a Board member of European Regional At-large Organisation at ICANN.

DrLouiseBennett,BCSSecurityCommunityofExpertise(Chair)Dr Louise Bennett chairs the BCS Security Community of Expertise. She consults on: strategic and corporate governance, the exploitation of new technology and risk management. Her current work focusses on: how to ensure trust online, particularly the governance of online identities for both individuals and organisations; payments over the Internet; developing resilient organisations, from environmental, security and privacy perspectives (including information assurance and fraud prevention). Dr Bennett also works as a Government advisor in several capacities. Currently, she is a member of: the Defence Science Expert Committee, the Cabinet Office Privacy and Consumer Advisory Group and the Technical Panel for the Information Commissioner.
