Brothers and Sisters! Our salvation is closer than when we first accepted the faith. The

night is far spent; the day draws near. Let us cast off deeds of darkness and put on the

not in sexual excess and lust, not in quarreling and jealousy. Rather, put on the Lord

come to those who are weak in faith. Do not enter in disputes with them. A man of

sound faith knows he can eat anything, while one who is weak in faith eats only vege-

St. Basil’s Charitable project 2021

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, we continue to inform you through parish bulletin about our different charita-ble projects:

# 16. Little Artem Matsyuk 9 years old was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor of the abdominal cavity. He cries all the time, that is caused by cancer. You can hear this cry on my Facebook page. After the first chemotherapy, Artem began to remember all his childhood faults and apologize to his mother. For walking in puddles without rubber boots. For that did not share a toy with the brother. Mother Oksana desperate-ly tried to convince the boy: he isn't guilty that he is sick. Cancer is not a punishment, cancer is just a disease… Therefore, Artem has very little time, and his family asks for help to pay for treatment at Barcelona Children's Hospital. The Spanish clinic promised Artem full recovery and billed his parents in the amount of 224,000 euros, not including accommodation. With the help of volun-teers, family and friends, the family has already managed to raise 40,860 euros. My sister in Ukraine knows this family - she confirmed this tragedy. One family sent $200 to help with the cost of surgery. May the Almighty God reward you for your generous contribution to our projects. If you willing to help us in any way or know somebody who needs a help, please contact parish priest Fr. Mykhaylo.

Before

After

Cheese-fare Sunday

Believe it or not, spring is coming, giving us longer day. And anyone who is a gardener is getting ready, for

a new season, for a season of planting, a season of growth, a season of expectancy. I know, the weather

outside does not showing us that warmth, but that day is coming and we are looking forward, so before

you can plant, you have to first of all get rid of all the dead branches and limbs of the trees, to clean up all

the left over from winter, and finally they turn over the soil so that it gets loosened and ready to receive

new growth. For us the Great Fast is that kind of preparation. It’s a time of getting ready, it’s a time for

new planting, for new growth, a time of expectancy. We first have to get ready, to make room for God.

And that’s just what we are called to do during this time of Lent. What are the spiritual housecleaning

practices that we are called to do? First of all Jesus tells us in the Gospel reading – If you forgive the faults

of others, your heavenly Father will forgive you yours…Forgiveness is like getting rid of the old dead

branches. continued on p.6

First Holy Communion Class arrived to the middle of it’s course—seven more ses-sions and our children will complete the course. On Feb. 7th, His Grace Metropol-itan +Lawrence lead wonderful lesson about Seven Holy Sacraments. Please con-tinue to keep in your prayers all children who are getting ready for their First Holy

Confession and Holy Communion.

Cheese-fare Sunday If you don’t get rid of them then you don’t

make room for new growth. Sometimes the one you have to forgive is

yourself. Sometimes the one you need to forgive is someone very close to

you. Sometimes you have to let go of a past hurt or offense. But if you

don’t forgive, then you can’t let go, and you can’t grow!

That’s one of the reasons this Sunday is called forgiveness Sunday, be-

cause before you begin Lent – you have to start at the beginning, get rid of

the dead word, get rid of the negative forces that bind you and keep you

from growing.

Then Jesus says you have to fast. When you fast, you are not to look glum

as the hypocrites do… So fasting is a spiritual exercise. It is just the op-

posite of feasting. We all know how much we love to feast, how much we

love good food. But we also know that when we are so full, we get so self satisfied, we get so comforta-

ble, we get so filled that there is no more room inside. That’s why we fast, to make room for God and for

others in our life. And so it is important to fast. I know that many of the old fathers and mothers of our

parish took fasting seriously. They just did it. Our Church gives us the minimum fasting rules today. It

says: No meat on Wednesdays and Fridays and a strict fast on the first day of Lent and on Good Friday.

You won’t die if you don’t watch TV or Internet four hours a day. You won’t die if you give up some foods

that you like. You won’t die of hunger if you don’t eat meat on Wednesdays and Fridays. In fact it will

probably be good for your health!

Then Jesus says: Do not lay up for yourselves an earthly treasure. Moths and rust corrode; thieves break

in and steal... Remember, where your treasure is, there your heart is also. That is why we are asked to

be mindful of others, to be mindful of the poor Almsgiving. To remember that all we have is a gift of

God and to reach out in God’s Name to those who are in greater need. There is a difference between

what is necessary and what I want. Sometimes our wants are so great, that we are never satisfied and all

we care about is ourselves. Jesus wants us to be mindful and open hearted to the poor. That’s why our

parish through the whole year takes a collection for those who are in a great need. There are so many

other ways you can give alms and do good for others. Give of your time, give of your talents. Open your

heart to others.

Finally Jesus talks about praying. During Lent our Church asks us to make time for prayer in Church.

There are additional services on Wednesdays and Fridays. There are deeply moving acts of prostrations –

giving yourself to God. Make time to pray at home and with your spouse and children. Use a prayer book

if you don’t know what to say. They will teach you the language of prayer – of thanking, blessing, praising

God and asking for what is good and holy for our lives.

Have a great Lent – be ready for God in your life! Make room so that you can grow in Christ and find His

joy and peace in His third day Resurrection.

Then the priest bows to all and begs forgiveness: Bless me, brothers and sisters, and forgive me, a sinner, whatever offenses I may have committed this day (this night) and all the days of my life by word, deed and thought as well as by all my senses. Choir:May God forgive you, reverend Father. Bless us also and forgive our offenses voluntary and involuntary (and the brethren bow to the priest).

May the Lord God by His grace forgive you all your sins and have mercy on you.

Then the priest say's: Let us pray for our most holy universal Pontiff, N., pope of Rome. Choir:May God save and have mercy. For our civil authorities. Choir:May God save and have mercy. For our most blessed Patriarch, N.; for our most reverend Metropolitan, N, for our God-loving Bishop, N Choir: May God save and have mercy. For all Catholic bishops. Choir:May God save and have mercy, For the noble benefactors of this holy church Choir: May God save and have mercy. For our spiritual fathers and for all our brethren in Christ. Choir:May God save and have mercy. For those who are absent and for those who are traveling. Choir:May God protect and have mercy. For those who are kind to us. Choir:May God reward and have mercy. For those who serve and who have served in this holy church Choir:May God save and have mercy. For those who hate us and for those who love us. Choir:May God forgive and have mercy. For the release of captives. Choir:May God grant freedom and have mercy. For the sick and suffering. Choir:May God heal and have mercy. For those living in anxiety and poverty. Choir:May God visit them and have mercy. For all orthodox Christians. Choir:May God save and have mercy. For an abundance of the fruits of the earth. Choir:May God grant and increase of the fruits of the earth. If it is a Sunday or a feast day, the priest says: Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Choir:Amen.

What is Service of Forgiveness?

Service of Forgiveness is a beautiful service

held in all Byzantine churches on the evening

before Lent starts. The service emphasizes

that God forgives our sins, but then also that

we must forgive each other. At the service,

the priest humbly asks the people in the

church to forgive him if he has wronged

them during the preceding year. The people reply by asking God to forgive the priest. Then the peo-

ple ask the priest to forgive them if they have injured him, and the priest replies by asking that God

forgive them. After these words, the people come forward, and the priest asks each individual

member of the assembly for forgiveness. He gives each member a hug or a kiss. The people are ad-

monished to ask each other individually for forgiveness for wrongs committed that year, and also to

ask family members for forgiveness.

Sunday, February 14 Sunday of Cheese-fare

Alleluia Verses: It is good to give praise to the Lord, and to sing to Your name, O Most High!

To announce Your mercy in the morning and Your truth every night.

Gospel: Matthew 6: 14 - 21 The Lord said: If you forgive the faults of others, your heavenly Father will forgive

you yours. If you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive you. When you fast, you are not to

look glum as the hypocrites do. They change the appearance of their faces so that others may see they are

fasting. I assure you, they are already repaid. When you fast, see to it that you groom your hair and wash

your face. In that way no one can see you are fasting but your Father who is hidden; and your Father who

sees what is hidden will repay you. Do not lay up for yourselves an earthly treasure. Moths and rust corrode;

thieves break in and steal. Make it your practice instead to store up heavenly treasure, which neither moths

nor rust corrode nor thieves break in and steal. Remember, where your treasure is there your heart is also.

Communion Hymn: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
