ISSUE 00 - Spring 2010Alumni NewsLetter 3

Dear Alumni,

I am privileged to serve at such an exciting and significant time in the history of GUST. We are officially a university, with a dynamic identity, an outstanding Center of Career Services and Alumni, and an efficient student body.

GUST became a center of opportunities for every student with the initiative to seek a college education of a quality that is unrivaled in Kuwait in addition to obtaining privileged career opportunities.

Your Alumni Newsletter’s team, an enthusiastic and diverse group, began discussing ways to involve students and alumni from GUST. The outcome resulted in issuing the Alumni Newsletter – a fantastic means to communicate constructive advice and ideas in addition to build stronger connections among students, Alumni, Faculty and corporate Partners. The Alumni Newsletter represents alumni interests and concerns to the University; encourages alumni to remain active members of GUST community; and encourages alumni to find meaningful ways to connect and reconnect to the University and to each other.

I encourage you to participate in writing newsletter articles and use your intellectual power to make our community a better place. It will enhance your pride as an alumnus and renew your connection to GUST by becoming involved in in-campus activities such as joining the Alumni Association; serving as a career mentor; or attending University events.

I hope to see many of you at one of the many University events. Look for major enhancements to GUST Alumni Association that will be rolled out over the next few weeks. We welcome your comments and suggestions. Sincerely,

Professor. Shuaib A. ShuaibGUST President

Dear GUST Alumni,

You were part of a unique culture and experience - one shaped by shared values and have probably cultivated meaningful relationships and friendships which are an important part of your life today.

Whether you are just commencing your career or you are already established in a senior role, there are many real and continuing benefits to be enjoyed as an alumnus of GUST. The combined knowledge and experience of the University itself and your fellow alumni is a staggering resource. Alumni regularly using the GUST website or taking part in local activities are already enjoying many of the benefits available today. This is just a small visible manifestation of an insurmountable phenomenon.

GUST aspires to become the leading University in Kuwait and the Middle East. We provide undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs to develop skilled business professionals who: “can do” and “can lead” the creation of new, valued-added businesses; improve existing businesses; and help secure the future prosperity of Kuwait and the region.

Be assured that your experience with GUST does not have to end with your graduation! The Alumni Newsletter has been created to help keep you connected, engaged, and involved with GUST through The centre of Career Services and Alumni. Through the GUST Alumni Newsletter, we hope to maintain open communication with Alumni in order to keep you informed of GUST news and developments and to hear what you are up to; improve and extend the academic and career support; and create new means for you to stay involved with GUST through new job opportunities, events, and field programs specifically designed for GUST alumni. As alumni, you form the largest stakeholder in the future growth and success of GUST. You have a choice as to whether you help shape, and benefit from, the changes that are taking place. I ask you to do few things:

1. Make the network stronger by connecting more. Update your contact information regularly - Keep your info up to date in order to receive communications, invitations and other information from GUST.

GUST Center of Career Services and Alumni (CCSA) encourages senior students to enroll in the Internship Program for the vast career advantages that they will gain in return. Internships give you the opportunity to gain experience, build your networking skills, and even determine if your current career path is for you.

Experience:Employers are looking for applicants with relevant work experience. The experience that you gain during internships becomes a valuable tool that you can use. Being able to apply skills that directly relate to a particular job will help get your resume prioritized compared to others.

Confidence Builder:Acquiring experience through working with professionals can boost your confidence, which makes it easier to approach a recruiter. Internship experience enables you to express job specific qualities that set you apart from other applicants.

Is this the Right Career Path? Once you get into the internship you may decide it’s not for you. Once your internship is over, you can then pursue another career path. On the other hand, it may reinforce your belief in the direction you have chosen. There are lots of advantages to doing an internship. The job experience you gain leads to improved confidence and networking skills.

Keep in mind that GUST students can do internships in the Fall and in the Spring as well as the Summer. If you are interested in pursuing an internship and you need help, please come to CCSA, office No. N1- 136, and we will be happy to assist you.

THE POWER OF INTERNSHIP

CAREER GUIDE

“I wish I could’ve stayed longer. I learned so much information, and was able to apply what I had already learned”

“GUST Practicum in Business and Internship program form a perfect career preparation tool for senior students. From NBK view point, It is helpful in locating a candidate with a specialized skill and allows us to minimize our risk by working with an intern before committing to a full time position”

Mr. Emad Al Ablani- AGMHead of Human Resources Group National Bank of Kuwait (NBK)

Ruwaida Al Zraad (Accounting) Summer 08 Intern National Bank of Kuwait

Get a professional reference. All job seekers need a list of 3- 4 professional references when applying for jobs. If you use your skills and treat your summer job as a professional work experience, your supervisor will surely be willing to give you a valuable recommendation. Evaluate. Ask yourself: What did you like about your Summer job, and more importantly, what did you dislike? After working in retail for a summer, maybe you have realized that customer service is not the field for you. Use what you learned about yourself to make more informed decisions about the right career path for you. So you didn’t land the big internship with a prestigious accounting firm this Summer. Don’t worry, there is still a lot to gain from your Summer job. All work experience is good experience! Take advantage of these tips to make your Summer job a fruitful experience! Work on your skills. There are certain skills that are important no matter what type of career you want. Interpersonal skills, critical thinking ability, self management, communication skills, and leadership ability are career competencies that all professionals should possess. In fact, GUST Practicum in Business & MIS course awards students 10 professional certificates that will distinguish them by adding vocational value to their resumes. Such certificates include soft skills in leadership, communication skills and time management in addition to certificates in technical skills such as report writing, job placement tests, project management, E commerce, creating websites and 6 other Microsoft office certifications. As a result, Practicum in business and MIS and GUST Internship Program help students gain self management skills like flexibility, organization, and time management which are especially important for students with little work experience.

Whatever your summer job is, it is easy to begin building these skills by reinforcing them at campus and taking your job seriously by treating it as a professional work experience.

Part-time Jobs This is a great way to help you prepare for your professional career. Visit the Career Services Office to view numerous opportunities available for GUST students.

Make the Most of Your

Summer Job

Interview DOS and DON’TSHere are some tips on what to do – and what not to do – at a job interview.

Do maintain a positive and confident attitude. Don`t arrive late, sweaty and flustered – this will end the interview before it begins.

Do listen carefully to questions and instructions. Don`t leave your mobile phone on.

Do have a good understanding of the job and the company. Don`t go into the interview without doing your homework.

Do highlight what benefits you can bring to the company.Don`t ramble on about things that aren`t related to the industry.

Do use your own experiences to answer the questions. Don`t exaggerate your previous experiences or skills (too much).

Do show passion and enthusiasm for the position. Don`t yawn, stare out the window.

Do promote your strengths and sell yourself.

Don`t reveal the negative parts of your personal life just yet.

Do let the employer know you have a clear career plan. Don`t sound confused about where you`re heading. Do have a list of prepared questions to ask about the company and the position. Don`t act like a rabbit caught in the headlights when it`s your turn to ask questions.

The youngest and most dynamic regional commercial bank, established in 1977, the Bank has acquired a leading role in the retail, corporate and investment banking sector through innovative product offers and technologically advanced delivery channels. The adoption of state-of-the-art services and ground-breaking technology has positioned it as a trendsetter in the domestic market and within the MENA region.

Burgan Bank Careers: Burgan Bank values the integrity, loyalty and spirit of its employees. We recognize that people are our most valuable asset. We invest in our employees and reward them with best-in-class benefit programs and career development opportunities. Appliers gain the option to submit their CVs through our Careers Page website, http://www.burgan.com/burgan/careers.asp where current vacancies are also posted.

Internship: In Burgan Bank, the internship offers an opportunity for students to gain practice in a real world setting under the guidance of a knowledgeable, experienced, and successful team. The internship can be established with information gathered, stored, managed, retrieved, and distributed. Normally, the internship is completed by the student for the purpose of earning academic credit only. In some cases, however, as long as the requirements for academic credit are established as a portion of the overall internship experience, students may receive payment for their work.

Part Time / Full Time: Part-time employment is a work scheduling strategy to encourage students to experience Burgan Bank, mainly in the Retail Banking Group, such as the Branches and Call Center. Part-time employees are scheduled to work depending on the university schedules. In general, part-time employees are entitled to the same benefits as full-time employees, and some Part-time employees have now extended into professional occupations, as Full Time employees. Full-time employment often comes with benefits that are not typically offered to part timers, short-term or temporary workers; such as the number or balance of the annual leaves, sick leaves and tickets that the Bank offers.

Burgan Bank has a world of opportunity for those who are dynamic, dedicated, willing to learn, grow and achieve. Our focus is to attract and develop great people like you and make your dreams a reality.

Microsoft Office is the most successful product range from Microsoft and is, beyond any doubt, the world’s most popular desktop efficiency application suite. Information workers at organizations across all sectors, corporate and public, rely on Microsoft Office to produce spectacular documents, perform seamless number crunching, make compelling presentations, maintain essential communications and store valuable data. Individuals having sound knowledge of Microsoft Office not only do their work more efficiently; they also distinguish themselves due to the high quality of their documents.

Being equally useful for all cadres, Microsoft Office skills are increasingly becoming an essential prerequisite for most careers. The job market is getting increasingly competitive as a reaction to the global financial crisis. Getting new jobs, or in some cases, keeping existing jobs is turning out to be quite a challenge, more so for those individuals who do not have any formal verification of their skills. Microsoft Business Certification Program helps individuals in validating their skills on Microsoft Office. Awarded after passing globally standardized practical examinations, the highly coveted credentials can help fresh graduates as well as existing employees in differentiating themselves from competition. The professional credentials recognized around the world not only give credibility and substance to Microsoft Office skills, they also demonstrate computing efficiency essential in the workplace. For organizations, Microsoft Business Certification program provides verification tools that not only help assess a person’s skills in using common business applications but also the ability to quickly complete on-the-job tasks across multiple applications in the Microsoft Office suite.

The Center of Career Services & Alumni (CCSA) at GUST plays a pivotal role in grooming GUST students and alumni for the job market. CCSA’s skills development program commonly known as “Practicum in Business/MIS” has proven highly effective in ensuring that GUST graduates are placed favourably in the highly competitive job market. Microsoft Business Certification is an integral module of the Practicum and is delivered in collaboration with LIFELONG, a Microsoft Certified Gold Partner for Learning Solutions. By the end of this term, CCSA and LIFELONG would have to their credit more than 2000 Microsoft Office credentials awarded to GUST students.
