Letter from the editor

Wow! I cannot believe the first term is already coming to an end. Parel Vallei has accomplished so much in one term, such as winning interschool’s 7 YEARS IN A ROW! So much is happening at PV and I am ecstatic to see the school develop and improve in so many ways. The Astro turf and the building of the classes have brought up a lot of talk and thought and I would just like to say that even though I won’t be fully part of the two additions, they are going to bring PV a lot of happiness in the future. Just hang in there and look forward to the end product. Each month the magazine is a challenge but I’m honoured to do it and it brings my committee and me great joy. It is exciting to see the number of viewers increase every time and would be amazing if the magazine hit an outstanding amount of viewers by the end of the year. Thank you to all who support the magazine! It has and is a great opportunity for all who is involved with it. I have learnt so much being the editor and chief of Ultimate PV. I hope that everyone who reads it enjoys it as much as I do. Thank you once again to my committee for all their hard work. It is a pleasure working with you guys. Thank you to those who have an interest in getting involved in Ultimate PV it is a pleasure to have anyone willing to help out. There is going be so much install in the next magazines so keep reading!

Have a good holiday!

MUSIC There’s something BIG in Cape Town something new, unique, HOT

and purely awesome… This I believe is what we call

MULTI-PLAYER

UP: How long have you been Dj-ing for? What age were you?

MP: I started at the beginning of 2010, so it hasn’t been too long. I guess that made me 17 when I first began.

UP: What’s the most rewarding aspect of Dj-ing for you?

MP: For me, the most rewarding part is being able to share my favourite tunes and music styles with my crowd.

UP: How did you get involved in this profession?

MP: It started off as a joke actually! A friend of mine had some deck and I always found myself, after a long night, messing around with the deck, pretending I was a scratch master like Ready D. After a while it dawned on me that what I was doing actually sounded pretty good. From then on, I have just been trying to get better and better at messing around!

UP: How did your first gigs start out?

MP: My first few gigs were mostly at under 18 parties. The crowd digged the music, and the pay is good but I am hoping to move more towards the real music scene in Cape Town now.

UP: Who’s your favourite DJ and why?

MP: Without question, is has to be the one and only NETSKY. There is just something about the way he produces that is a league above the rest. I swear that guy is a musical prodigy.

By Megan Soule

Page 7: ULTIMATE PV MARCH 2012

UP: Who is the most influential Dj in this career that you look up to?

MP: Locally has to be the likes of Niskerone, Liver, Dank, Sibot. Internationally would be Netsky, Camo & Krooked, Deadmau5.

UP: Best experience yet? Where was it?

MP: Best experience was Rock the River for new years with my mate Rauk Wannerton. We had a daylight setting but the crowd was jamming hard. There is just something about Drum and Bass during the day!

UP: What’s your greatest achievement so far in this career?

MP: Having one of our mixes featured on the Assemblys Website as well as receiving feedback from some of the huge international names and being booked for big outdoor festivals.

UP: Do you get nervous before your gigs? If so how do you calm yourself down?

MP: Sometimes, but after the first few mixes, everything is chilled.

UP: Who taught you do Dj?

MP: No one really taught me. My friends and I just teach each other as we go.

UP: What can we expect from you this year?

MP: In the next few months, Rauk and I (Multi-Player is our group together) have been booked to play at GATECRASHERS with the legendary PAUL VAN DYK. We are also playing at Zula Bar in Cape Town and Riddems out in Durbanville. Just before our gig at Riddems, we will be doing a guest appearance on Mutha FM for a short interview and minimix in promotion of the event.

UP: One of your goals as a Dj for this year?

MP: We are looking into Releasing an E.P by the end of the year.Consisting of some Original Multi-Player Tracks and maybe a Remix or Two.

UP: What would advice for upcoming dj’s?

MP: My advice for up and coming DJs and Producers would be to stick to what you love. Do not let other people tell you what to play or play the music you think they want to hear. No matter what, there will always be a fan base for what you play or produce. Most importantly, do not take things too seriously, HAVE FUN while you doing it! Do your self a favour, check us out on Facebook and sound cloud!

Unwind Neal Shusterman

In a dystopian future, after a civil war between the ‘Pro-choice’ and ‘Pro-life’ parties, it is illegal to have an abortion... but another alternative that satisfies both arguments has been created. It is against the law to exterminate the life of a child from the moment of conception until the child reaches 13. However, between the ages of 13 and 18 a child’s parents can decide to “unwind” their own child – a process by which a child is both terminated and kept alive.

The book centres around three runaways that fight the system that would unwind them. Brought together by chance and kept together by desperation, these unlikely companions cross the country in search of refuge. If they can live until they are 18, they can’t be harmed – but in world where it is seen as normal for teenagers to be taken apart, bit by bit, for their working organs, skins, hand, hearts, brains – 18 seems a long way away.

This book really stays with you long after you put it down. An exciting, yet terrifying read, it is perfect for a reader who wants to be carried away. (For a similar, more advanced read: pick up Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro)

BOOK REVIEW By Serena Paver

Page 9: ULTIMATE PV MARCH 2012

Celebrity Profile Michelle Williams by Serena Paver Michelle Williams, an award winning star – who can imagine this dazzling beauty anywhere but on the silver screen? Still, it was not always glitz and glam for Michelle.

Born and raised a small town girl in rural Kalispell Montana, she was brought up to be a smart inquisitive child with a love of reading and acting. Tough and self-sufficient from an early age, she was legally emancipated from her parents at the tender age of 15.

First making her mark in the controversial movie, Brokeback Mountain (and earning herself an academy award nomination), Michelle starred in blockbusters such as Shutter Island and Blue Valentine, as well as her most recent film, My Week with Marilyn, based on a real event in the life of Colin Clark.

Williams has been an Oscar Nominee three times and won a golden globe for best actress for her performance in My Week with Marilyn. Although she is talented in her own right, she is perhaps most well known for her relationship with the late and great Heath Ledger. The couple had a child together before they split some years later, shortly before Ledger’s tragic death. Michelle was heartbroken when she heard the news, but has come out of her funk stronger and even more fiery than before, saying: “His family and I watch Matilda [their daughter] as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still”

My Week with Marilyn (also starring the dreamy Eddie Redmayne and everyone’s favourite, Emma Watson), is set to come out in theatres later this month – an award winning performance you do not want to miss. Also keep an eye out for Michelle in Oz: The Great and Powerful, which is set to be released sometime next year.

Le Moulin Rouge

The Moulin Rouge. A night club, a dance hall and bordello. The kingdom of night time pleasures. Where the rich and powerful came to play with the young and beautiful creatures of the underworld. But what happens when the lights go out, the mood turns dark and the very essence of a free, loving France goes under attack?

Le Moulin Rouge tells the unseen story of the club as it and its patrons fight their way through Nazi occupation during the greatest war of the 20th century. Including everything you loved in the movie, this all new story explores the heartbreak of people who lose the one thing they always relied on – their liberty and their pride in being French.

The story follows Emilie (a young innocent girl brought to stay at the Moulin Rouge when her father throws her out of his house) as she falls in love, with Paris, with the Moulin Rouge and with Jean, a man – still running from ghosts of his own. They are taught the principles of Freedom, Beauty, Truth and Love, but soon their new family is threatened by Hans Strieber, a German official, whose purpose is to make sure France conforms to the Nazi ideals.

The show has a cast of 101, more than half of which are awesome Parel Vallei students or “Old-Dogs”, including dancers, singers, actors and chorus – to name but a few: our own wonder-boy Liam Walsh, superstar Maxine Botha, and woman-of-the-hour Yasmin Martin. I talk to them for all the inside news.

By Serena Paver

Page 19: ULTIMATE PV MARCH 2012

“I auditioned because I’ve been in Darryl’s previous shows, so when this one came around I knew it was a chance not to be missed. Also, Yasmin was auditioning and we’re like the same person. Being a lead is great because of all the friendly vibes in the cast. We are a family. My favourite part of the show is when I get to dress up as a dead guy and jump out of a coffin shooting a gun.”

– Liam Walsh

“I auditioned for Le Moulin Rouge because Darryl is amazing, and i try to be involved with as many shows as I can. I play Jujanique in the show. My favourite part of it is ‘Like a Virgin’ because I get to run around and act all weird... well, weirder. It’s a really great scene, and has the rest of the cast in stitches every time we do it. I think one should come watch the show because it has a lot of variety.”

– Yasmin Martin

“I wanted to be in this show because Darryl was directing it, that and the fact that it was the opportunity to dance at Artscape again. It’s a wonderful feeling to know you’re on the same stage where professionals dance and act. Being a dancer is great because we are the focus of the show – I mean the reason the real Moulin Rouge is famous is for its dancing girls. My favourite part of the show is doing the Can Can. It’s so much fun and it looks really great too. I think one should come watch the show because it’s an opportunity to see something really original – it’ll never show again. You’ll be able to support your talented friends!” – Maxine Botha

Page 20: ULTIMATE PV MARCH 2012

So why should you come watch? Because it is a highly original, professionally executed show with something for everyone – comedy, drama, tragedy, romance... and dancing girls in very little clothing.

Join us for this all singing, all dancing extravaganza. Come and support your local talent as we show in the Artscape from 14 March and at Spier from 22 March. Like us on Facebook, or go to Computicket for more details.

Liam Walsh, one of Parel Vallei’s rising young stars, a

damn fine actor, hometown legend and a How I Met Your Mother fan.

Liam was born in Durban but moved here around the age of two, so he calls Somerset West his home town and has been raised here amongst the loving Walsh Family. He has two siblings, Matthew Walsh (19) and Hannah Walsh (21), both ex-Parel Valleirs themselves. And both fondly remembered by the school.

He went to the International School of Helderberg as a child, which he claims was a small school, but such a great experience to be there every day. He built great friendships there and since it was small classrooms, basically knew everyone and learned how to make friends with everyone he met, a trait that would later help him much in life, both socially and career wise.

Liam Walsh is a famous name both in Parel Vallei and the local Playhouse for his many talented performances, some of which include Romeo and Juliet and Jack and the Beanstalk. He claims his favorite ones were Little Mermaid, because it was the show that really got him into acting and Jack and the Beanstalk because of the Cast, script and the general joviality of the show. These are just a few of his shows, when asked he was said he had done eight so far and was still ready for more.

Liam’s birthday is on the 1st of September and his favorite movies include Benchwarmers, The Hangover Two and The Powerangers Movie. Which he claimed was Amazing. When I asked Liam which part he would like to play in any movie he answered, “Christian in The Moulin Rouge or Barney in the How I met your Mother Movie. It hasn’t been made yet. But it should be.”

His role models in life are his family because of their general awesomeness’ and John Mayer because, “…well he’s John freaking Mayer”.

Also Jonathan Roxmouth for his stage work, and all his friends for putting up with his lame jokes.

Page 25: ULTIMATE PV MARCH 2012

“His favorite play were little Mermaid, because it was the show that really

got him into acting”

Page 26: ULTIMATE PV MARCH 2012

“He would always be happy as long as he entertained people”

Page 27: ULTIMATE PV MARCH 2012

Outside of the theatre he also participates in the sports hockey, tennis and soccer, so quite the sportsman as well, in short a man of many talents!

His favorite food is shepherd’s pie as it’s “like a party in your mouth”.

When asked what he would like to do after he was done with school he informed that he would always be happy as long as he entertained people and so would always seek work in the entertainment industry. “So I’ll probably end up as a bull fighter or something”.

We all know that whatever Liam chooses to become in life will be astounding and brilliant and the gates to his future are wide open!

Liam Walsh is set to play Picasso in the next hottest play of this year, Le Moulin Rouge, which will take place at Artscape and the Spier Amphitheatre this March. Don’t miss the acting of this brilliant young star; make sure to book tickets now! Who knows? Perhaps when he’s a famous Celebrity one day you can tell people that you were there and you saw him first!

Student Exchange Dale Boyce 1. When did you go and for how long? I went for 4 and a half weeks, I left on the 8th of December and got back on the 10th of Jan. 2. Why did you wanted to go and why Holland? I wanted to see and explore new things; I was very interested in the French life style and culture. 3. What is your favorite thing about Holland and what’s your least favorite? My favorite thing was definitely the Eiffel tower and Disneyland, the least favorite thing would be not knowing what was going on in the house I stayed in, they can’t speak English, but it was a good experience

4. What is your favorite food there? My favorite French food... that’s a difficult one to answer because all their food is really good, I’m going to have to say their bread. Their bread was perfect and tastes great; it’s addictive once you’ve taken a bite 5. What is the strangest/funniest experience you've had when you were there? There were many funny parts, but one of the funniest parts would be when i went to their parties, they love to dance, but they dance like retards, so i lol'd at them

6. What have you learned as a foreign exchange student? Well I’ve learned that i live in a beautiful and warm country, and that the way things run here are way different to the way things are there, especially in school, completely different. Was a great experience. 7. Did you get homesick? I never really got homesick, was enjoying myself too much

8. What is the most interesting thing you've seen in Holland? The most interesting thing i saw in France was definitely Mont Saint Michel. it’s a church/castle in the middle of nowhere on a hill, when its high tide, its surrounded by sea water and when its low tide, it’s like a desert around the island. was very interesting

9. Would you recommend this to others? I highly recommend this programme and even if you go without the programme, just to see the real France is absolutely amazing, most people just go to Paris, but Paris is completely different to the rest of France. you can’t just see Paris and judge France by Paris. but yes the rotary youth exchange programme is the best way to tour the world as a teen.

Page 29: ULTIMATE PV MARCH 2012

Chris Visser 1. When did you go and for how long? 9 December 2011 till 11 January 2012 2. Why did you wanted to go and why Holland? To experience a different country and when i offered the idea to my parents they thought it was great so i jumped at it. Holland and the Dutch language has always attracted me and I’ve always wanted to see Amsterdam and experience its tourism hotspots! 3. What is your favorite thing about Holland and what’s your least favorite? Favorite: the food is amazing and the people are great.. least: the cold weather.

4. What is your favorite food there? Definitely a kroket and a toastie with their cheese. 5. What is the strangest/funniest experience you've had when you were there? Amsterdam was quite strange and it was really funny when we got lost at night, but we had a good time...

6. What have you learned as a foreign exchange student? Definitely how to use those trains. I learned a lot about people and how to deal with them and all the differences that there can be. 7. Did you get homesick? Yeah i did a little bit on Christmas and close to the end but it wasn’t too bad. I had a good family which made the experience better

8. What is the most interesting thing you've seen in Holland? Amsterdam, as usual, was definitely the most interesting. the rest of Holland is good but Amsterdam doesn’t even feel part of Holland that’s how different it is

9. Would you recommend this to others? I would definitely recommend this to anyone, it was great and i and the rest of the exchange students had a great time, go for it!
