The State Indoor Ultimate
Championships were held on
Foundation Day, Monday 6 June 2011,
at Lakeside Recreation Centre. This
was the first time the event has run in
recent years and it was great to have
58 players across 8 teams come to
support the day.
Games featured high quality indoor ulti,
with plenty of quick flicks, scoobers,
give‑and‑go's, and of course the trusty
hammer. The day tempted hammer-
happy teams who could gain 3‑points
for an end‑zone
to end‑zone pass
after invoking 'the
Hammer of Thor'
before the pull.
Teams tried
various offensive
and defensive
tactics against the Hammer throughout
the day and both teams in the grand
final being able to pick up the extra
points on offer. Disco Inferno walked
away with the Hammer of Thor imitation
chrome trophy with four scoring
conversions from their eight games.
After sweating it out in the round robin,
teams rested up with hot soup and
pasta over lunch, before hitting the
finals. Gary Ground Work took out the
grand final against Red-Footed Tortoise
(8-5) and Hop Hogs won third place
over Primal (8-5). Gary Ground Work
entered the
finals series as
strong
contenders and
finished the day
undefeated.
The Spirit prize was won by Disco
Inferno, who averaged 9/10 for Spirit
across their games. Teme Meme
received an honourable mention as a
close second place.
The seven players with the most MVP
points were nominated as a 'Super
Seven' team. Congratulations to Daniel
Chang, Greg Chin, Anna Haynes,
Steve Jamieson, Cole Lloyd, Sabrina
Moro and Daniel McNaughton.
Thanks again to all those who came out
and supported this event. We hope that
future championships continue to get
bigger and better!

Head coaches of the U19 Australian youth teams, Matt Hill and Lu Fearnside,
headed to Perth on 31 April and 1 May to dedicate their time and expertise
towards developing Youth Ultimate here in Perth. 27 participants were tested
with advanced throwing techniques, offense and defense tips and zone tactics.
The aim of the weekend was to get our youth thinking about taking the current
opportunities on offer (league & club events) as well as registering for the upcoming
National Youth Training Camp in Melbourne.
This project was made possible through support from the
Department of Sport and Recreation’s ‘Coach in
Residence’ grant. This allows WA sporting associations to
obtain coaching expertise from outside the state for player
and coach development.
Many thanks to Matt & Lu as well as Assistant Coaches, Julie Hardt, Glen
Fowles, Aaron Dixon & Sam Cleary. Thanks also go to Steve Baker & Anna
Haynes for coordinating the project and their ongoing investment in Youth
Ultimate and youth opportunities in WA.

Introducing... Cathryn Pilcher (aka “Cat Attack”)
Who do you play for currently: Bunbury Butter Monkeys
How old were you when you first started playing and for which team?: Age 25 when a friend from
hockey and I were looking for some off-season fitness. They introduced me to Ultimate and from
there we started the Club that is now Bunbury Ultimate Inc.
What does a ’day in the life’ of Cat Attack look like? I coordinate the mental health rehabilitation
program in Bunbury, so that involves group therapy for people that have complex mental health
needs. I specialise in teaching life/coping skills to people with severe emotion dysregulation
disorders. After work, I either play Ultimate, hockey, volleyball or just go for a run to de-stress my
day.
Out of all the rules in Ultimate, which one have you most struggled to understand/use/call? With the game being self-
refereed, I always forget to call foul until it is too late.
What keeps you playing from season to season? The Ulti crew in Bunno... They are just an awesome bunch of people
(plus I like how fit it keeps me!).
Favourites: I’ll go for a quote - “Attack life, its going to kill you anway” ~ Anon.
Highlights from your Ultimate career? Getting voted MVP (or Most Valuable Bovine as it was dubbed) at the Bunbury
tourney “Moovin’ the Groove” 2011.

Perth Ultimate League - Hat League
In the spirit of trying something new, the Division One League format was slightly altered to accommodate a
six-week Hat League.
The concept behind the initiative was to provide an
opportunity for players to play in Division One if they
had not yet tried it and for the existing players to play
with some new team mates.
Players signed up and we issued their new team for a
six-week round robin league.
Final standings
Winners: Blue (pictured)
Runners Up: Yellow
3rd: Red
4th: White
5th: Green
6th: Black
Blue not only took out the grandfinal, but also won the spirit prize. Player votes were collected throughout the
competition and the All Star Seven line up included Ellen Murray, Louise Delane, Anna Haynes, Louis
Masarei, Dave Briggs, Ashvin Nair and Sam Kirkham. Special thanks goes to John Damiani for his
assistance with sorting out teams and to Julie Hardt for coordinating the six week league.
The Hat League format will appear on the WA Ultimate Calendar again later in the year but in the meantime,
look out for the feedback opportunities so we can make this style of league bigger and better in the future.

In February I took on the role of ‘Development Officer’
for the WA Flying Disc Association. The position has
been made possible with the support of the Australian
Flying Disc Association who have contributed vital
funding to make this role a reality.
The intention of this position is to increase the number
of people playing Ultimate in WA by increasing the
awareness of flying disc sports in the wider
community, provide in-school coaching sessions,
running coaching courses, expanding support in
regional areas and providing administrative support to
the Association’s key volunteers.
In the last five months over 50 in-school sessions
have been delivered to over 20 schools in the Perth
metropolitan area. With the support of accredited
coaches including Steve Baker, Kyal Oh and John
Damiani we are now able to deliver more school
sessions in more suburbs than ever before. School
sessions are important in raising the awareness of
Ultimate as an ideal sport for all ages and every
session brings us closer to the goal of having a youth
competition equivalent to our senior competitions now
on offer. Clubs, schools, universities and now school
sports equipment supplier, Slate-Gartrell Sports are
now purchasing competition approved discs easily
from us and this year alone we have sold almost 400
discs.
In addition to school sessions we have been able to
deliver professional development sessions to school
physical education teachers looking to introduce a
new sport into their school. The Department of Sport
and Recreation hold regular Junior Sport
Development days for PE teachers to learn new skills
and sports to teach their students. The last event was
held in May and 30 teachers took part throughout the
day in the Ultimate specific sessions.
Having a dedicated staff member allows not only our
Association to be available to provide more support
but also provides physical presence at events like
Tertiary Sports WA competitions involving our
university clubs and school sports days like the
competition planned for term four with several schools
affiliated with the Associated Catholic Colleges of WA.
Ron Alexander (Director General, Department of Sport &
Recreation (DSR)) and Anna Haynes at the recent DSR
Breakfast.
As the Development Officer, I can invest time in
extending our promotion of the sport. Currently new
brochures and resource CDs have been distributed to
local schools and soon the AFDA will have a DVD
available and poster promotion packages ready for us
to supply to schools.
Next on the horizon is a North-West project. We
recently received a request from the Town of Port
Hedland to help them set up Ultimate. We are
currently negotiating funding support and finalizing an
action plan to make this happen. This venture will
hopefully lead to similar projects in the regional areas
of WA including Broome and Kununurra, where
Ultimate is slowly growing.
If you have any suggestions or development requests
regarding Ultimate here in WA, please do not hesitate
to contact me via [email protected].

Who’s Your Ultimate Legend?
Introducing... Jordan Foster
Who do you play for currently? Moon Doggies
How old were you when you first started playing, and for which team? 20, for Moon Doggies
What does a 'day in the life' of Jordan look like? Sleeping in til around 11, working two jobs, going
home to write a thesis, and somewhere in the middle trying to catch up with friends and do some
reading... busy girl!
Out of all of the rules in Ultimate, which one have you most struggled to understand/use/call? I
guess it sounds a little stupid, but I never call pick. On the field, it can get confusing if someone is
'entering' your space and therefore cuts off your lead, or if you were already 'sharing' the space. I guess on a big field you
have to expect that sort of thing (running into each other/cutting off leads) to happen, and it's not always easy to know
when to call it or not. So I just never call them.
What keeps you from playing from season to season? It's just a great sport with really friendly people. The competition
never gets so competitive that it becomes hostile (in my experience anyway!), but it's enough that it keeps you that little
bit more motivated. Plus it's always fun to see people's reactions when you tell them you play frisbee!
Favourites: Italian food, John Mayer, and any sort of romance books (I'm such a sucker)
Highlights from your Ultimate career? Beating the Ninjas (haha sorry guys!), and getting the Female MVP one season.
The medal is a highly cherished possession!
Get to know Your Ultimate Community
Who rocks your Ultimate world? Your friend’s parents who pick you up and drive you to Ultimate each week? Your mate who puts the cones out each week to set up the fields? Your friendly team mate who took
the time to correct your throws? Or maybe the organised person who orders your team uniforms?
Take a few moments to nominate your Legend for their efforts.
Since the launch of REAP (Recruit, Educate, Acknowledge and Preserve) in 2009, the AFDA has been active
in promoting the volunteer management program across the country, encouraging each state to recruit and
reward hard working volunteers for their ongoing efforts. After two years of raising the awareness through the
Volunteer of the Month initiative, a new direction is currently being implemented.
Each month there will be a call for "Ultimate Legends". Simply nominate someone who you feel is a Legend
and if your nominee is selected, you also win a prize because the AFDA thinks that those who take their time
to raise the awareness of volunteer efforts are Legends too!
The prize: A unique designed Ultra-star sports disc.
How to nominate: Each month reminders will be sent out via yahoo group email lists and posted on the Ultimate Australia
Facebook page. You can nominate by sending an email to: [email protected] or comment on the Ultimate
Australia Facebook page when the status update calls for nominations. Please include details including full
names of the nominee and the nominator and a reason for the nomination.
In the spirit of keeping this new direction on an even playing field, a fair play element will be in place. Each
person who wins the monthly prize (nominee and nominator) is eligible to receive one disc. Each subsequent
nomination will earn members a raffle ticket in the six monthly prize draw for a $50.00 Rebel Sport Voucher.
This means that if you’re efforts are so amazing as to receive more than one nomination or
the person you have nominated has already been nominated by someone else, you will
receive a ticket in our six month draw.
These limited edition discs cannot be purchased they can only be awarded by the AFDA to
"Ultimate Legends".

WA Ultimate Coaches recognised for their hard work
On Friday 10th June, the 2011 Annual Coaches’ Awards were held at the Burswood Resort. This event was hosted by
the Department of Sport and Recreation and encourages State Sporting Associations to recognise their Coaches for the
contributions they make to sport. This is the second time this event has been run and this year the WA Flying Disc
Association sent Glen Fowles, Kyal Oh and Anna Haynes as representatives.
Each sport had the opportunity to submit their High Performance Coach of the Year and Community Coach of the Year.
All individuals were acknowledged at the dinner in front of their peers and presented with a certificate and gift. Sports
also have the opportunity to nominate up to five people for Commendation Certificates.
This year John Damiani was acknowledged for his contribution to High
Performance, Anna Haynes for Community Involvement and Kyal Oh as
Youth Coach of the Year (pictured left).
Also acknowledged at this event were Paige Oh, Blake Lewis, Monte
Masarei and Annie Jessop with commendation certificates for Rookie of
the Year in the sport of Ultimate.
Anna Haynes was also interview by event Master of Ceremonies, Tim
Gossage which was a wonderful opportunity to raise the profile of the
sport in general and recognise those contributing to the growth and
development of the sport here in WA.
This event was truly a great night out, with plenty of opportunities to meet coaches and representatives from other
sports and key industry leaders in sport and recreation.
The Women’s Development day was run at Methodist Ladies College on Dec 4 2010. The days focus was skills specific to the women’s game. The 18 participants worked on their zone offence and defence as well and a range of throws that women do not normally have the opportunity to do in a mixed game. Thanks goes to Anna Haynes and Dan McNaughton who successfully coached the day. And also to Rebel Sport who supplied some vouchers for the day.

Beach Ultimate
For the first time ever a six-week beach league was trialled in Perth. Four teams took part in the inaugural
event and for six weeks games were conducted at City Beach under lights. With City Beach a popular location
for family swimming, picnics and barbecues this was a prime location providing great exposure for the sport.
With ample space on offer and games 60 minutes in duration there was plenty of sand action for all players
involved.
A big thank you to Bec Lorraine for making this event possible.
Ninjas Ultimate Club
By Sam Cleary
Ninjas Ultimate Club has been hosting weekly open training sessions at
High View Park in Nedlands for the past two months. The session have
been focused at beginner and intermediate levels with the aim of
developing skills and knowledge of Ultimate Frisbee.
The sessions are light hearted and enjoyable and have been attended
by players from a multitude of clubs and teams. Ninjas Ultimate has
been thrilled with the sessions as it has promoted more growth in the
sport with new players joining in with some of the holder hands.
The session will be run through winter until September. All are
welcome. Contact [email protected] for further details.
PRIMAL Ultimate Club
By Natalie Kippin
The past year has seen PRIMAL go through a bit of a growth spurt,
welcoming new members of various ages. As well as seeing new men
and women coming to our club activities, our promotion of youth
Ultimate opportunities has led to a great bunch of young people
joining our club and playing various tournaments with us.
We’ve been looking more like a club too with our new uniforms, wrist
bands and now even cleat bags!
Lately we’ve played in the beach league, Bunbury’s Moovin the
Groove tournament and the WA Indoor Championships.
In the coming months we’ll put our first mixed team into Wednesday
night’s Division Two league.
Our Monday night Club night in Yokine/Inglewood is ongoing, with a winter King & Queen Hat currently being run which
sees around 25 people playing weekly. Our Club’s details can be found here: http://primal.waultimate.com.
