ULTRA HOUSE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
On Friday 21 October, a lovely group of Ultra students visited Caton House to celebrate the Harvest Festival with the residents. Daniel Brown did a wonderful reading about feeding the five thousand, Nana Yeboah read a prayer and Gracie Weston and Sydney Percy-Larkin helped distribute and collect the hymn sheets.
Everyone helped with refreshments and it was a wonderful team effort.
All students contributed food for the Harvest Festival which will be passed on to the Food Bank.

On our fourth visit to Caton House this term we were fortunate to be invited to their Remembrance afternoon on 11 November. Below are accounts from three of our students who visited. Oliver Coleman - On Friday 11 November I went to Caton House to commemorate a Remembrance party. We met loads of really nice residents. We chatted about what they did when they were children and what it was like. We ate cake (which was nice) and Jake and Regan read some poems about poppies. There was a quiz and music from the 1940s playing in the background. One of the residents had a photo album of when he went to India. There was also a man who used to play on bomb sites and the war planes that had been shot down and he used to take parts of the plane home! Regan Ellis - A group of us went to Caton House to commemorate our fallen soldiers on Remembrance Day. We sat and heard stories from some of the residents who were alive during World War 2. Reg was an engineer in India for five years. We also heard from Florence who got married duing the war. Next, Jake and I read out extracts from the poem ‘ In Flanders Fields’. It was a wonderful experience for us to encounter, although I already work there on a Saturday, it was great to sit and chat with the residents. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit and look forward to going there again in the future. Jack Grace - On 11 November a group of Mercury students went to visit Caton House. We spent the afternoon celebrating Remembrance Day with the residents. They told us the stories of both wars and their experiences between 1914 – 1945. We read poems and texts relating to poppies and competed in a quiz. I enjoyed seeing such a negative situation from different perspectives. The trip allowed me to understand how people felt during the war. One resident had a photograph album of pictures he had taken of the war. We saw actual things from the war, creating a picture in my mind I could never imagine seeing. As music played in the background and food was being s e r v e d , t h e residents were smiling as we remembered the war ending.
Overall, the trip was a huge success. My knowledge of the wars is now so refined, I can now picture what the residents went through. Meeting these lovely people was amazing and I would love to do it again. I loved it! This was a particularly enjoyable visit to Caton House, it is always good to speak and listen with genuine interest to peoples’ experiences and stories of their lives. All of the students who attended paid interest and respect throughout the visit. Reginald Humphries (pictured) is 94 years young and he was proud to show me his Veterans medal. He has lived in Bletchley since 1969 and was part of the development committee of Milton Keynes when it was just an idea. The students were impeccably behaved as they always are, and one of the staff members did ask if they could keep Jack Grace! I had to disappoint them. Please have a look at the picture of the Lorenz machine that Reg showed me. The final trip to Caton House in December will be their Christmas Party and it will be Lorenz students who attend. Colossus News
What a start to the half term! Colossus being very
busy again. Year 7 - X band, had an awesome STEM
afternoon, creating a rocket and launching it. Not as
easy as it appears, but my goodness they had fun. Here
are some pictures showing them in action.
Congratulations to Kayla, C13. Kayla joined Lord Grey in July 2016, from MK Academy. She has settled in really well and works super hard in all of her subjects. The teachers from MK Academy were recently at Lord Grey School and brought with them ‘Player of Year’ trophy for Kayla. She was awarded this for her brilliant performances in football - It is great to have you on our team Kayla!
Jonathan, C05. His poem was published in the last newsletter and we just wanted to show you what a winning poet looks like. Here is Jonathan after he received word of his prize.
Colossus House launched their charity appeal — MK Food Bank recently. We are collecting various products: soap, toilet paper, kitchen rolls, washing up liquid, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, herbs and spices. The MK Food bank distributes over 60,000 parcels annually, but these items are not generally included as they are a luxury. They make a huge difference and we want to give those in need something to make life a little more pleasant at this festive time. So we are asking all students and staff to search their cupboards at home and see if they can contribute towards this wonderful appeal. The donations will be delivered to MK Food Bank during the last week of term.

Our Headteacher, Dr Tracey Jones, presented certificates on behalf of The
Henry Allen Trust, paying tribute to the boys charity fundraising.

SHOEBOX APPEAL There was a truly magnificent response to the Shoebox Appeal this year by our students and staff.
We have been able to complete eighty eight shoeboxes. This smashes all previous records. An enormous thank you to all staff and students; Sixth Form students for filling a BIG BOX with shoebox items and Mr Houghton's form who donated all their Vivos to the appeal. An inspiration! All this tremendous effort will give eighty eight children a very happy Christmas.

Stefan Apostal won shopping vouchers worth £50, thanks to Arriva running a competition for young people. This competition was to encourage young people in Milton Keynes to apply for an ‘All in 1 MK Card’. This is a bus card invented by Milton Keynes Youth Cabinet. There were many prizes on offer including an iPad mini and hundreds of pounds worth of shopping vouchers. At this event lunch was also provided by Arriva. This is the time to pick up an application form – which is open to all under 19s who permanently reside in Milton Keynes. ‘All in 1 MK Cardholders’ can travel within the borough of Milton Keynes and it includes discounted ticket options. The ‘All in 1 MK Card’ has benefits of a form of identification, a travel concessionary card… all rolled into one card. On Monday 14 November, 7x
students had the opportunity to
take part in an exciting STEM
(Science, Engineering,
Technology and Mathematics)
afternoon.
What is STEM? It is the acronym for Science,
Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics. STEM helps to
provide the opportunity for the
subjects to work together within
schools, allowing a broad and
balanced education.
STEM can lead to exciting
and rewarding career options.
The event was a real success
with all students and staff
having an enjoyable time.
Students were given the task to
design, make and test rockets
with the aim of increasing the
distance when they were
launched.
Students had to workout, through
the testing and development of
their designs to discover what
changes would help increase
the distance of the rockets.
The ‘simple’ rockets averaged
around ten meters, but by the
end of the sessions many groups
were hitting the back wall of the
Sports Hall.
As we ran out of length in the
Sports Hall, there was no individual
winning groups. Well done to
everyone in the photographs,
who won House points and prizes.

On Friday, 18th November 2016 thirty of our wonderful students braved the cold to sing with one hundred and sixty primary school students on national television. This was in the grounds of the MK Dons Stadium for Children in
Need.
The students were fantastic all day and true role models to the younger students. At short notice they were asked to sing a different part and rose to the challenge without a fuss. During the downtime we had many a game of Twist which thankfully Mr Buckley and I managed to avoid. Please can I say a big thank you to Ruth Maxwell for coaching the choir to sing ‘Lean On Me’ and Mr Buckley, Mr Upton, Mr Soper and Mrs Myers for
supporting me during the day.

PWC ROADSHOW Friday, 9 December 9.45-10.45am. Open to all Year 12 and 13 students PwC are on the road with their back to school campaign and we are delighted to welcome them to Lord Grey. Business staff currently on one of our Graduate or School Leaver programmes will be visiting schools up and down the country to share their experiences with students to help them with the important decisions they're facing. The campaign, continues to reinforce our commitment to supporting the development of talented individuals and helping to equip them with the skills they need for future jobs or study. The presenters will give a background to themselves and PwC, followed by an insight into the employability skills that employers are looking for, how they can identify them and develop what they need. This is a great opportunity to share experiences peer-to-peer, provide advice and answer any questions students may have. This is a good opportunity for anyone interested in accountancy or business roles, whether or not you intend going to university, as PwC offer school leaver and graduate opportunities. It would also be useful for anyone considering apprenticeships or graduate schemes in other sectors as many of the messages will be transferable. YEAR 8 Thursday 15th December An options and choices performance for our Year 8 students to help them as they begin to think about making decisions relating to their KS4 options. We are very excited to have Enact Solutions coming into school to deliver a thought provoking show designed to engage young people to make the right choices, help them to realise their dreams, raise their aspirations, and inspire them to succeed. YEAR 11 WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITY February Half-Term For students that may be interested in a career in business or accountancy – why not consider a one-day insight programme in London during February half-term? This will be a great addition to their CVs at an early stage of their career exploration. Government and Politics
There has been a real buzz about the study of Politics in our school this term, which is no surprise because of the unlikely events in the news recently!
Brexit and the election of Donald Trump seem to have generated a huge amount of interest in Politics amongst all year groups, and I have had to answer lots of questions from students (and some staff) wanting to find out why so many dramatic changes have been taking place.
Fortunately, Lord Grey students have the opportunity to study A-Level Government and Politics which is taught by Mr Greenwood and myself.
Year 11 students can apply now by making Government and Politics one of their choices on their application form to stay on in Sixth Form.

Year 7 Netball Success The team continued their winning streak with some fantastic results at a recent mini tournament. The team played a total of three fixtures and in this time only conceded one goal. This was due to some fantastic defending from captain, Lily Morgan and Rachel Alofe turning over many passes.
The scores were: Lord Grey won 6-0 against Shenley Brook End, 9-0 against Oakgrove and 6-1 against MK Academy. Player of the tournament was awarded to Remi Martin who had unbelievable shooting accuracy and received many compliments from other schools.
Well done to the whole team: Lily Morgan, Remi Martin, Darcy Guy, Hermoine Hilton, Kadi Henderson, Rachel Olofe, Millie Hirst, Charlie Sellars.
Cross Country Success
Gemma Milne represented Lord Grey School at the MK School's Cross Country event and ran the 4000m course and secured second place. She qualified for the Bucks Cross Country Event to be held in Wycombe to represent MK Marshall Athletics Club.

As a result of recent events outside your children’s school, Thames Valley Police will be holding several operations for speeding and parking issues in and adjacent to the school.
Reduced speed limits are in place to protect your children. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents reported a 74% reduction in child pedestrian casualties by reducing to a 20mph speed limit. There is also a 40% reduction in child fatalities compared to a 30mph speed limit.
Parking in the restricted areas reduces visibility for pedestrians and other drivers causing safety issues for your children. Parking in these restricted areas prevents the traffic from moving freely. This is the trigger for a majority of the ‘road rage’ incidents reported near school.
