December, 2011
Dear Friends,
Thanks to you, children in India and Kenya are smiling this Christmas. Because of your generosity, children in In-
dia who are AIDS orphans are getting free medical care and attention. And in Kenya, children are also receiving
medical care and nutritious meals through their school feeding program.
This ―big change‖ in their lives happened because you share the ―small change‖ in your pocket— those pennies,
nickels, dimes and quarters—along with some dollar bills. Earlier this year you dumped that money into small
buckets in your church and then that money was delivered to the Annual Conference in June.
What started small turned out to be a major collection—$16,399.98—tow cents short of $16,400! This ―Bridge of
Love,‖ offering may have been the highest amount ever raised. What we do know is that it was 72% increase over
2010 when total giving for the ―Bridge of Love‖ was $9,000. We are not in charge of planning for next year‘s
―Bridge of Love‖ at the 2012 annual Conference, but even as we thank you for your generosity, we encourage you
to start collecting those coins now.
Close your eyes and say a prayer for those little ones in Kenya and India—
and feel anew God‘s promise that ―it is more blessed to give than to re-
ceive.‖

With Appreciation to UMW
The Methodist Women's Soup Supper and Christmas Auction was a huge success. Re-
turning after a two year hiatus, the event provided an evening of fellowship and great fun
at Anne Chew‘s home. Auctioneer, Janette Bramer skillfully and with good humor led the
women to contribute $380 which was donated to Evergreen Christian Outreach.
A gift from the women at the auction was also given to UMCE. A new cross featuring a
nativity scene hangs on the wall of crosses in the hall near the library.
Many thanks to hostess, Anne Chew, auctioneer Janette Bramer
and all the very generous women in attendance!

HOW CAN WE CONTINUE OUR UMCE COMMUNITY MEAL?
The United Methodist Church of Evergreen has held a free monthly Community Meal since 1992 thanks to church volunteers, cooks and helpers. It has been a wonderful outreach for the church while bringing our Ev-ergreen neighbors together and into the church for an evening of friendly socializing. It is currently scheduled for the last Wednesday of each month with the exception of December when it is held the week prior to Christmas. For the past many years Nicki Seavey has lead the effort, planning, shopping and cooking for the popular meal 12 months a year. We are all grateful for Nicki‘s hard work and dedication as well as her wonderful meals. Thank You Nicki! While ever young at heart, Nicki is 87. She very much enjoys preparing the meals but is concerned that if something were to happen to her and there was no one to take her place the church might be unable to con-tinue providing the Community Meals. Nicki, as well as many others, would like to see this tradition of the UMCE Community Meal continue so the question is: How can we best do this? Here are some possibilities:
Having a few people willing to oversee and coordinate the meal, being sure there are cooks and volunteer helpers scheduled each month and assuring that there is variation in the menu month to month.
Another possibility we discussed was that if there were a person or persons willing to step into Nicki‘s shoes they could ―apprentice‖ with Nicki next year and build on Nicki‘s experience.
One possibility is for a small group of friends, an individual, a family, or even a committee or other church group to commit to preparing one (or more) meal a year. We could then cover all 12 months and eve-ryone would get to prepare a favorite dish.
Of course cooking for 50 or more is a challenge but fortunately there are special cookbooks that are helpful and Nicki undoubtedly has a few tricks and recipes she might be willing to share. Plus, we‘ve always had volun-teers to help in the kitchen as well as with the set-up and the clean-up. Over the years the meal has changed from being a basic soup and salad menu with breads and desserts to full meals with all the fixings. In the future we could have a variety of different types of meals depending upon who was preparing the meal, although we would want to maintain some consistency. The Community Meal gets donations each month at the dinners to help support it, and with some church funds and possibly private donations the meal preparation would not be a financial burden for anyone. We are open to all suggestions and ideas and we appreciate your taking the time to consider helping with the Community Meal. Anyone interested in participating in our continuing this wonderful tradition please contact Dwight Souder: ph. 303-674-7296 or email [email protected]. You may also talk to Nicki for
more information.

Around the Church...
Community Meal
The Community Meal for January will be held on Wednesday evening, January 25th from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. in Fellow-
ship Hall. All members and friends of the church are invited to attend and bring guests!
Donations of food and goods are always appreciated, as are volunteers to serve as cooks, servers, and clean-up
crew.
Many thanks to those who made the December meal a Success:
UMCE is blessed with numerous ‗angels‘ who augment the mission of the church.
This month, our church has been blessed with the following gifts:
A gift of new religious art was funded by the fruit sale and purchased by a couple who prefer to remain
anonymous. The two paintings and can be seen in the library and in the narthex. Thank You!
During the Christmas dinner, those in attendance may have noticed a
delay in getting dessert. It seems the caterer ran out of ice cream. The
UMCE youth serving the meal decided ALL present should receive dessert.
One youth ―angel‖ drove to the grocery store and purchased ice cream, tak-
ing care to buy a flavor identical to the one being served. Thank You!

UMCE Financial Summary
PAGE 11 JANUARY 2012
I would like to THANK ALL THE FAMILIES that purchased grocery cards from the church dur-ing this last year. We had a total sales of $72,650.00 during the 2011 year. That is the most sales in one year for a long time. It meant a profit for the church of $3,632.00. Of this $2,000.00 was given towards the Church Mission Giving. We also covered the expenses for the December Community Meal. There are enough funds in the account to continue this program for the coming year without having to ask for "start up monies" from the general account. Charlene Hahn Card Program Chair
