(2004 and 2011) and seven of the past 10 WCHA Final Five playoff events. During the course of the 2011-12 season, the Bulldogs set a club record by going unbeaten in 17 straight games and were ranked first in both major weekly polls (USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine for a program-best nine consecutive weeks. In March 2009, UMD became the first play-in game participant to ever claim the Final Five title and, later that spring, strung together a school-record six-game postseason winning streak before it fell to Miami University 2-1 in the NCAA West Regional final. Nine years ago, Sandelin, 48, turned UMD into a NCAA Frozen Four participant for the first time in nearly a generation, marshaling his troops to their most victories (they were 28-13-4 overall) and highest WCHA finish (second place on a 19-7-2 mark) since 1992-93. For his efforts, the Hibbing, Minn., na-tive was chosen the WCHA Coach of the Year as well as the national coach of the year by both insidecolleg-ehockey.com and uscho.com. In 2002-03, Sandelin’s charges went 22-15-5 overall and captured fifth place in the WCHA with a 14-10-4 mark while experiencing the greatest one-season turnaround of any league club that winter. One year earlier, he guided UMD to a 13-24-1 record in all games -- nearly doubling the number of victories from the previous season (7-28-4). Sandelin officially signed on as a member of the Bulldog staff on March 31, 2000 following six years of assistant coaching deployment at North Dakota. Prior to joining the Fighting Sioux (who won two NCAA titles during his tenure), Sandelin spent the 1993-94 sea-son as the head coach of the Fargo-Moorhead Junior Kings of the Junior Elite Hockey League after working in that same capacity (and doubling as general manager) the previous winter with the American Hockey Asso-ciation’s Fargo-Moorhead Express. He capped off his four-year playing career at North Dakota in 1985-86 by being named one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. An All-WCHA first team pick and an All-American second team selection as a senior, Sandelin went on to play seven years of professional hockey, which included National Hockey League stints with the Montreal Canadiens (1986-88), Philadelphia Flyers (1990-91) and Minnesota North Stars (1991-92). Sandelin, one of just two active WCHA coaches to do time in the NHL, was the Montreal Canadiens’ second-round pick in the 1982 NHL draft (40th choice overall). He served as Team USA’s head coach at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships, directing that club to a fourth-place finish, and was an assistant coach for the U.S. at that same event last winter.

Tom Serratore (Bemidji State, 1982) is in 12th season as the head coach with the Beavers and has a 198-171-43 record -- including a 10-12-1 career mark against UMD -- to show for it. His Beavers captured five regular season titles in the now-defunct College Hockey America (2003-05 and 2007-10) in addition to securing NCAA playoff berths in 2004-05, 2005-06, 2008-09 (when they advanced to the Frozen Four) and 2009-10. Serratore, a former Beaver team captain and a member of Bemidji State’s 1986 NCAA Division III championship club, was a St. Cloud State University assistant coach for five seasons before he began a three-year stint (1998-2001) as an associate head coach at Bemidji State. He was officially named the Beavers’ head coach on April 23, 2001, succeeding the legendary Bob Peters, who stepped down after overseeing the Bemidji State program for 35 years.

THE RIVALRY: UMD and Bemidji State University will meet for the 32nd and 33rd times ever this weekend. The Bulldogs hold a 21-10-1 lead in the all-time series, which began back on Feb. 8, 1948, and are 14-10-1 against the Beavers since Bemidji State joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 1999-2000. The two clubs met just twice one year ago (Oct. 28-29) -- in Duluth where the Bulldogs swept their intrastate rivals, getting goals from six different players in a 6-2 triumph before then-senior goaltender Kenny Reiter turned aside all 23 shots the Bulldog to preserve a 1-0 victory.

LAST WEEKEND: UMD took three of four points in a two-game WCHA set at Michigan Tech, prevailing 7-3 on Friday night and then settling for a 4-4 tie 24 hours later. Playing together for the first time ever, the line of rookie left winger Austin Farley, (two goals and one assist for three point) sophomore center Justin Crandall (1-2=3) and sophomore right winger Caleb Herbert (1-2=3) combined for four goals and five assists in the opener while senior left winger Mike Seidel (1-1=2), senior defenseman Drew Olson (0-2=2) and freshman center Tony Cameranesi (0-2=2)

each turned in two-point evenings. Farley, Herbert, Cameranesi and Seidel all scored once in the rematch and rookie defenseman Andy Welinski was credited with three assists for the Bulldogs, who outshot the Huskies 37-26 on the night and 5-0 in the five-minute overtime. The 4-4 draw extended UMD’s unbeaten streak in Houghton to seven games (6-0-1).

Bemidji State was upended twice on the road (3-0 Friday and 6-1 Saturday) by WCHA rival Minnesota State University-Mankato and was outshot 72-38 in the process. Danny Mattson accounted for the lone Beaver goal on the weekend which came on the power play with 6:53 to go in regulation Saturday.

AYE, AYE CAPTAIN: Left winger Cody Danberg is being entrusted with the team captaincy duties for the 69th edition of UMD hockey while a pair of fellow seniors -- right winger Keegan Flaherty and defenseman Drew Olson -- are serving as assistant team captains.

SOME CLOSE SHAVES: Four of the past six clashes between UMD and Bemidji State have gone into overtime. The Beavers were victorious in two of those

outings -- in the opening round of the 2011 WCHA Final Five (3-2) and on Jan. 23, 2010 at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (5-4) -- while UMD posted a 3-2 road win on Oct. 29, 2010 and followed that up with a 2-2 deadlock one night later.

THAT’S ALL FOLKS: UMD, along with current WCHA colleagues Colorado College, Denver, the University of Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota and St. Cloud State will hook up with the new eight-team National Collegiate Hockey Conference next fall. The Bulldogs have been members of the WCHA since the 1965-66 season.

MAKING A SPLASH : Austin Farley, who figured in nearly half of UMD’s goal harvest last weekend at Michigan Tech, was rewarded with a WCHA Offensive Player of the Week citation for his spirited performance. Farley, who was this year’s first WCHA Rookie of the Week honoree, concluded the weekend with five points on three goals and two assists, was a +4 and put seven shots on target. He was also an integral part of a UMD power play unit that went 4-for-12 over the two games.

MAKING A SPLASH II: The Bulldogs currently sport the second leading rookie scorers in the nation in left winger Austin Farley and center Tony Cameranesi, who both have accumulated 15 points. Farley, who is a team-best +5 on the year, scored three times and assisted on two more goals in last weekend’s series with Michigan Tech while Cameranesi has managed at least one point in eight of the past nine games. As a group, UMD’s freshman class is the fourth highest scoring group in NCAA hockey, collectively amassing 15 goals and 16 assists for 41 points.

THE BIG 5-0-0: Scott Sandelin will coach his 500th game with the Bulldogs this Friday night at AMSOIL Arena. In his 13 seasons behind the UMD bench, he has produced a 221-217-61 overall record – includ-ing a 99-56-24 mark (for a .620 winning percentage) since the start of the 2008-09 season.

FEEL THE POWER: The Bulldogs have struck at least once with the man advantage in eight consecutive games and now own the nation’s fifth most potent power play, connecting on 25.4 percent of their opportunities.

STILL THE TOP ‘DOG: Senior winger Mike Seidel, who has picked up at least one point in 13 of UMD’s 14 outings to date (he was blanked in UMD’s 2-0 loss to Wisconsin on Oct. 26), continues to pace the Bulldogs in scoring with 10 goals and seven assists. Those 10 goals are bettered by only two other NCAA II combat-ants (Niagara University’s Giancarlo Iurorio with 12 and St. Lawrence University’s Greg Carey with 11) at the moment. Seidel, the country’s leader in power play goals with six (he shares that honor with Carey), also ranks fifth nationally in shots on goal (a 4.21 per night

average). He’ll carry a career-high nine-game scoring streak into this Friday night’s clash with Bemidji State.

SECOND NIGHT BLIGHT: UMD has yet to win a series rematch game this season, going 0-5-2 on that particular evening.

GETTING THE SHORT END OF THE STICK: Sophomore right winger Adam Krause’s shorthanded goal (his first col-legiate tally) in last Friday’s 7-3 triumph at Michigan Tech was just the second by a Bulldog since the 2011 NCAA playoffs. Senior right winger Keegan Flaherty had the other shortie, which also came against Michigan Tech (the eventual game-winner) on Dec. 2, 2011 in Houghton. Over that same period of time, the Bulldogs have been scored upon while on the power play only three times with two of those coming last season (by Michigan Tech on Jan. 27, 2012 and the University of Notre Dame on Oct. 8, 2011) and the other occurring earlier this year (Nov. 24) versus St. Cloud State. UMD hasn’t ceded a shorthanded goal on the road since Jarrett Burton of Clarkson University turned the trick on Jan. 4, 2011.

FREE HOCKEY: The Bulldogs are unbeaten in 38 of their last 43 overtime games (15-5-23 and 0-1-3 in 2012-13) stretching back to the 2008-09 season opener. Among active Bulldogs, only two have an overtime goal to their collegiate credit -- seniors Cody Danberg (Jan. 11, 2008 vs. Minnesota State-Mankato) and Mike Seidel (March 10, 2012 in UMD’s 3-2 double-overtime victory over visiting Minnesota State-Mankato in the WCHA playoffs).

BULLDOG BITS: Left winger/center Caleb Herbert snapped a nine-game scoring drought, the longest of his collegiate career (by seven games), with a three-point effort last Friday at Michigan Tech. Last winter, Herbert finished with the eighth highest scor-ing yield of any NCAA newcomer (33) ... Both junior Aaron Crandall (2-3-2) and freshman Matt McNeely (2-4-1) have made seven starts in goal for the Bull-dogs thus far. Crandall has faced Bemidji State only once previously – on Oct. 29, 2010 when he stopped 26 of 28 Beaver shots to help preserve UMD’s 3-2 overtime victory ... The Bulldogs, who have outshot the opposition in all but two of their 14 outings to date (the exception being both ends of the Notre Dame series on Oct. 18-19), are averaging 33.14 shots on goal per night, the 11th highest figure in the country ... The first of sophomore defenseman Chris Casto’s two collegiate goals came at the expense of Bemidji State on Oct. 28, 2010 in Duluth ... With an average of 17.9 minutes of infraction time per night, the Bulldogs are the nation’s most penalized team. Their opponents, haven’t fared any better in this department, accruing 105 penalties (three more than UMD) for that same 17.9 minutes per game average ... Senior right winger Keegan Flaherty has now skated in 95 consecutive games, the longest ironman streak among active Bulldogs while two other seniors -- defenseman Wade Bergman and Jake Hendrickson -- have both made 79 successive appearances (going back to Dec. 30, 2010) ... Going back to Feb. 26, 2010, the Bulldogs have lost two or more games in a row only three times and the longest losing streak they’ve had to endure during that stretch is three outings (Oct. 8-16, 2011). Senior team captain Cody Danberg, who because of injuries had taken part in only one game over the previous two seasons (the 2011-12 opener with Notre

Dame at AMSOIL Arena), is the first sixth-year senior to ever play at UMD ... Since suffering a 3-2 setback to Bemidji State in the opening round of the 2011 WCHA Final Five, the Bulldogs are 21-1-4 when tak-ing a lead into the third period. On the flip side, UMD is a mere 1-20-2 (0-9-1 in 2011-12 and 0-4-0 this season) when trailing at the second intermission over the past three seasons. The last time UMD overcame a second-intermission deficit to win was on Nov. 10, 2010 when it erased a 2-1 Michigan Tech advantage by scoring four times in the final 20 minutes of regula-tion on its way to a 5-3 home triumph ... The Bulldogs haven’t been shut out in a regular season road outing in nearly six years (2-0 vs. Bemidji State on Jan. 5, 2007), but they’ve come up empty on six regular season occasions in Duluth over that same stretch ... Up until three weeks ago, UMD had cracked the Top 20 in every USCHO.com poll since Nov. 2, 2009 ... The Bulldogs are 21-12-4 in its 37 lifetime engagements at AMSOIL Arena, which opened its doors for business on Dec. 30, 2010. That includes a 2-3-1 record tin 2012-13. UMD is averaging 6,124 spectators per game at home this season, the fifth best attendance figure in the nation.

2010-11 NCAA Champions • Home of Five Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winners

ON TAP: The Bulldogs will put the wraps on the first half of their 2012-13 WCHA schedule with a pair of engagements at the University of Alaska-Anchorage (Dec. 14-15).
