COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP FOCUS AT UME PREP By Mr. James Tweedy, UME College Scholarship Counselor / Adviser & English III Instructor
I am writing to provide a brief outline of some of the major elements of my
efforts as UME’s College Scholarship Counselor. I want to stress that defining
"scholarship" is the basis of the effort for my role and that the reason we refer
to students as scholars is because we expect a higher level of engagement, re-
sponsibility, inspiration, innovation, and sense of purpose. So to that end, I
will focus on how to use and hone each term above into a level of "scholarship"
that is essential to the culture of UME Prep. As a result, with the application
of those ideas and demonstrated skills from those ideas we can say that all
students should receive some form of merit based scholarship. Now that may
not happen right away, but with whatever direction a student pursues...some
stakeholder should be willing to invest in our scholars because they display
true UME Prep scholarship and are therefore worthy of a "scholarship" award.
So, the practical efforts and objectives I create will bolster the following
outcomes.
Scholars will be able to: Determine an individual post-secondary pathway.
Create a SMART strategy for success in school and life purpose.
Create a diverse profile of community and service leadership to demonstrate their commitment to a solution oriented existence.
Participate in exploration opportunities and alternatives for reaching their goals.
Define and initiate strategies and skills to take effective steps toward col-lege application, scholarships, financial aid, and college life.
Families will be able to: Consider trends and initiatives to help plan the trajectory of their
scholar's post-secondary plans.
Effectively guide their scholar's focus on steps required by their schools of interest.
Help their scholar maintain timelines for specific admissions and scholar-ship opportunities they want to explore.
Thanks,
James Tweedy

Eagle Update
Articles By Coach Ignatz
Family Night at the Mavs Game and the Court of Dreams Experience was a special time for UME
Prep! On January 12, our Varsity girls’ basketball team finished off North Dallas Adventist Acade-
my 20-18 in a defensive struggle at American Airlines Center. The Varsity boys’ fell just short by a
score of 42-37. Later that night, the Mavs lost a close game to the Cavs in over-time though lead-
ing most of regulation. Thank you to all the players, families, and fans for your support!
Lady Eagles Basketball Season Basketball season is quickly coming to an end. The Varsi-
ty and Junior High girls’ teams have enjoyed success this
season, with each team qualifying for post season play-
offs. Going into the playoffs, the Junior High team, led by
Head Coach Andrea Davidson, were 6-3, marking the
highest winning total of games at this level in our short
history and the first time qualifying for playoffs. Our Var-
sity girls’ team, in its first season at this level, won the
regular season TCSAAL District 2 Championship. Led by
Head Coach Leigh Ann Eddlemon, the Lady Eagles head-
ed into the playoff with a record of 12-4, 8-0 in the Dis-
trict. Congratulations Lady Eagles Basketball!
Thank you, Coach Eddlemon! Coach Leigh Ann Eddlemon is leaving UME Prep for another position away
from education. She has been in education for a total of 15 years. She was a
founding teacher at UME in ELA, Reading, and PE. Coach Eddlemon was the
UME Ladies Varsity Head Coach in basketball, softball, cross-country, and
JV volleyball. Last year, in its inaugural season, she led her young varsity
softball team to a winning record! Earlier this year, she led her JV Volleyball
team to the play-offs, finishing the season 6-4. Her Varsity girls’ basketball
team went far beyond imagination in its inaugural season. Thank you for
your pioneering efforts Coach Eddlemon. We all will miss you and wish you
the best. No doubt you are leaving a WINNER!

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT Interview by Hannah Daniels, 11th Grade Scholars
Tell us about your family.
I am married to my husband Greg, who serves as an attorney in Dallas. I met him at Texas A&M University, and we’ve been married for 27 years. We have two children. My oldest is Preston, and he is a junior at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. I also have an 8th grader here at UME named Johanna.
What are some hobbies or interests you have outside of school? When I'm not here, I work two days during the week for my husband. I do human resources and accounting, and I am a legal assistant for him. When I’m not there, I like to cook, sew, quilt, and craft. I like to run for exercise in the morning, and I love to shop for stress relief.
How did you become a teacher and how long have you been at UME? When I graduated from Texas A&M, I graduated with a math degree. All of my friends wanted to teach right off the bat, but it was something that I didn’t want to do. I didn’t have the patience for it, so I went to corporate America and worked for a human resource consulting firm in north Dallas. I loved that and did it that for years until we started our family. My children and the years changed me, and ultimately, God kind of changed me and what I wanted in life. He changed my patience level and how I deal with people. My son left for college, and then God opened this position at UME. This is my third year here, and I’m now teaching a subject that I have always loved since high school. It’s not what I thought I would do 25-30 years ago when I got out of college, but I’m a differ-ent person than I was then, and I love it.
What is something you love about UME Prep?
I love that the parents care so much about their kids, and they also care about the teachers here. They care about the school and making it a success. This school, from the beginning, was founded on families that had a very Godly perspective, and they had hearts that were searching for excel-lence, and that is what I like about the foundation and the bones of this school. I love the schedule. I love that it allows me to teach, but it also allows me to spend time helping my husband out in his business too. I like the flexibility and balance UME provides. Here, I still have time to be with my family, to do the things I want to do homemaker-wise with my kids, still do the things I like to do, and be there for my husband and his job. I couldn’t do these if I was back in corporate America.
Do you have a favorite quote or saying? For me, it’s a verse that came into my life as a college student. Philippians 4:6-7 reads “Be anxious
for nothing,” and it goes on to focus on the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. That
verse has taken me through my whole life, to remember who is in control. It’s not me; it’s God, and
that's been my verse that I’ve reflected upon through the different ups and downs of my life.
Claudia Gorman — 7th Math, 7th/8th PreAlgebra
Though it may be January, the warm days that we’ve experienced this month have definitely added a spring air to the
start of our spring semester. Along with the warmth has been a reminder of what spring represents: a time of growth,
both regrowth and new growth. Some of us may be even starting to get our garden beds ready for the early spring plant-
ings or trimming trees in preparation for a time of regrowth as dormant plants and trees become alive again.
Opportunities for UME Parents
This spring at UME also offers an exciting list of events that will provide us as parents with opportunities for regrowth
and new growth in our relationships with our children as well as opportunities to socialize and learn alongside other par-
ents at UME, including:
Monthly Snack and Chat events: These monthly events tend to occur on a Thursday and are a relaxed time
where parents are able to come to both learn and exchange information over snacks and coffee. They tend to include a
presentation or panel discussion followed by small group discussions between parents of children in similar grade levels.
Monthly Dads and Donuts events: These monthly events tend to take place on the Friday after Snack and
Chat. They provide a time for children to have some quality time with their dads during breakfast followed by a dads-
only discussion, which focuses on the challenges and rewards of fatherhood and our role in the education of our children.
Parent University (Mar. 5th): We’re putting the final touches on this year’s Parent University, a cherished
tradition at UME that offers a morning full of engaging and educational programming geared especially towards us as
parents followed by a family picnic!
One of the key features of UME that stands out is the value that placed on providing enriching educational opportunities
to not only our children but also to us as parents! We hope that you’ll be able to join in some of these opportunities as we
move forward with a spring full of growth and regrowth in ourselves and our families!

Self Defense at UME
The self-defense classes at UME have been going on for the past year now. The class is taught in the Cube every Tuesday and Thursday from 2 to 3 PM. The class is run by Mr. Tommy Stallard, who is the owner of the Arlington School of Self-Defense with over 30 years of experience teaching professionally. Mr. Stallard, a fifth-degree black-belt, is also one of the math teachers at UME. Mr. Sam Walling is the lead teacher and he is a 4th degree black belt with over 20 years expe-rience in martial arts.
If you like the idea of enrolling your child in an activity that will strengthen their character, help them to be more disciplined and fo-cused (and you get to avoid the Carline two times a week) - then this class may be for you!
If you are interested in enrolling your child in this class, please call Mr. Stallard for monthly fee rates at 817-946-5756 or email him at [email protected].

The entire elementary program (Kindergarten through
4th Grade) of UME Prep is now using the Honorable
Character Classroom Management System in all class-
rooms, specialty classes, and school activities. The
system's emphasis is on positive behavior. The honor-
able characteristics that the teachers look for from our
scholars include: respect, obedience, diligence,
wisdom, kindness, self-control, orderliness,
service, attentiveness, cooperation, courage,
honesty, forgiveness, and responsibility.
The teachers are working daily on "catching" the scholars' good behavior, recog-
nizing their good choices, and rewarding the behavior on a classroom chart. All
of this wonderful information is also recorded on an individual conduct card
that every elementary scholar takes home each Friday. Defining character
marks are also noted on the scholars' conduct card in order to help each scholar
learn and grow in their character choice.
I am thrilled to implement this system at UME Prep. It is a wonderful tool to use as we guide our scholars in their
character development.
"I love Honorable
Character because par-
ents get to see all the
wonderful things we rec-
ognize their children for
every day. I also love how
the students are now rec-
ognizing and praising
each other for their good
character." Mrs. Shaw

Thank you High School Scholars and Parents for taking the time to provide feedback through the re-cent following opportunities: 1) Fall Townhall Meetings, 2) 10th/11th Grade Forum Discussion with Scholars and Parents, 3) High School Student Survey, and 4) December’s School-Family Partnership Survey Your feedback is very helpful as we continue to enhance our high school experience for our leading classes!
We are excited to announce some changes for our UME Prep High School Scholars. After meeting with parents and 10th/11th grade scholars of our High School program, we have made some changes that were requested. These are some changes that you might have noticed in the High School world:
New College Advisor: Mr. James Tweedy has joined our counseling team in the role of College Advisor. He will be working with our juniors and sophomores as they navigate choosing a college, preparing applications, procuring scholarships, applying for financial aid, and many other things they will encounter as they begin their college search. We are thrilled to have Mr. Tweedy join us in this role.
Morning Lockers: Scholars may go directly to their lockers when they arrive at school each morning.
9th Grade Pick Up: Freshman are now allowed to wait for pick up along with the 10th/11th graders.
High School Pick Up: High School scholars may leave the building in the afternoon without waiting for their name to be called at carpool time.
Junior Lunchroom: Juniors have been provided a space in one of the new portables to eat lunch together during their longer lunch periods on Tuesday and Thursday.
Please watch for more changes to be coming soon. Thank you for working with us as we continue to invest in our high school scholars and leading class! Kayla Smith UME Prep Principal
DO YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO
WHAT YOU DO BEST EVERY DAY???
Where are you focusing your energy? On your strengths or your weaknesses?
Strengthsfinder 2.0 offers an opportunity to learn about your most natural abilities. You have them in you now and they are the things you do the best. In an effort towards self-discovery, leadership, and service, we want to guide our student leaders into a radical realm of thought; to learn their greatest talents and pour energy into growing them instead of their weaknesses.
At this leadership seminar, we will be guiding the students through the process of a short assessment, learning their "top 5" talents and realizing the possibilities of focusing on the positive!!! This is a compelling tool that will give our high school scholars a head start in making decisions and capitalizing on their strengths!

to come alongside this partnership, and provide this exciting opportunity for our high school scholars. This pro-
gram will primarily focus on strengthening our high schoolers in the areas of service, leadership, character,
and college preparation. The full 8-session leadership series will officially begin next year, but we are kick-
