of Contract F04611-68-C-0064, Study of Storahility of Metal
Screens.
This program, a one-man month effort over d three-month
period, conducted for the Air Force Rocket Propulsion
Laboratory, Edwards, California, beginning 1 April lq68

ABSTRACT
This report covers the results of an effort involving a threemonths period to retrieve information on the compat.bilityof wire cloth filters with rocket propellants. The same typesof wire cloth used in filters is also used in ;urface forceorientation devices in missile systems underc!,inq low gravityenvironment.
During this stud 96 filters were found that are consideredgood candidates for useful information. Each of these filter:swere found as part of an installation or as a separate unit.Most of the filters were still installed in live systems withpropellants and p~rforming their designated function. S.iO:of the filter ele ents have been borrowed, visually inspectedand photographed. Data sheets on all 96 units ha':e been pre-pared and are included in this report. Time histcries for thespecLments range from 7-1/2 years to 3 months. INTRODUCT ION
Advances in the art of applying surface tunsion technologyto the management of liquid gas interfaces in Space Propul-sion Systems and Tactical Weapons and other related activitieshas raised questions as to the long term effects of highenergy propellants on fine micronic wire cloth from whichsuriace tension devices are made.
A materials storabiLity program is underway at the EdwardsAir Force Base Rocket Propulsion Laboratory and in years tocome, valid empirical storability data will be acquired.
In the interim, a means of gathering compatability data onwire cloth, is to research records of wire cloth filters thathave been made for use with these propellants, to trace theirwhereabouts and examine those that have been in extended usefor effects of propellants on the wire cloth.
This report summarizes the results of an effort covering athree month period to collect data that would provideevidence of the storability of stainless steel wire clothin high energy propellants. In retrieving data for thiscontract, four major test facilities were visited: TRWTest Site, San Juan Capistrano; Wyle Laboratorics, Nor-oFacility; Rocketdyne, Santa Susana Facility; and Marquardt
4 Corporation, Magic Mountain Test Site.
Five filter manufacturers are r, presented by twenly-thre,case histories established which represent ninet -six f Iters;

In followinq this proc dure, sevo al filterswere uncovered that were not manufactured by ýNostern Filter.However, since they were excellent examples 3r data, they havebeen documented and the resultant data is c closed in thisreport. Unfortunately, design data is not always tncludeddue to the prorubitive length daf time allnowed by the contract.

CASE HISTORIES AND DESCRIPTIONS
This section contains information and data retrieved duringaccomplishment of the study. Included are data sheets, photoreduced drawings of the filter assembly and filter element.and where possible, photographs of the general and specificareas where the filter units are located. Because of limitedaccess to the various test sites, photographs could not betaken of all units observed. In most cases, supervisory per-sonnel reviewed their files for photos taken of *-he area whichcontained a view of the filter.
In instances where filters were considered good arandidatesbut were not Western Filter units, it was not possible to getcopies of the drawings of the units. Consequently, in thetime allotted for this program, an attempt was mvade to gatheras much information as available. In some instdnces, photosof the units were available.
Photographs showing the surroundings indicate tA.e environmentalconditions, such as vibration from close proximity of enginetests, sunlight exposure causing hot day cyclint. conditionsas well as outdoor cold day conditions. Also. .,n indicationis given showing the ease or difficulty entailei in remo-inga sample element for further evaluation.

DESCRIPTION- CUR HISTORY #1
Filter Assembly P/N 1-1-10005 is a Y-Type configuration.The entire assembly is manufactured from stainless steel andHeli-arc welded in construction. This unit has 4-inch, 150lb., ASA inlet and outlet flanges. A feature of this configu-ration is that the filter element can be removed without havingto remove the filter case from the line. By removing theend cap and spider assembly, the element will slip out forcleaning or replacement. The pleated element is 304 stainlesssteel, Heli-arc welded and has in excess of 400 squ&re inchesof screen.
There are four filter units in this case history. Th,! unitshave been in use at Wyle Laboratories, Norco Facility, forneven years. They have been functioning exposed to direztsunlight and weather. Flow rates have been to 250 GPM isingboth UDMH and N2 04 alternately. The elements have been cleanedmany times.
Figures 2 through 10 relate information to the four candidateunits in this case history. We have visually inspected the fil-ter element shown and screen shows no dettimental effect fromlong term service.
The element in Figure 8 had the outer shroud removed. Theshroud was similar to the inner shroud shown. A polka dotpattern of discoloration is in evidence on the screen. Thismatches the outer support holes and is believed to be a de-posit caused by the higher concentration of fluid flow throughthis area.
To satisfy this theory, one-half of the unit was cleaned inan electro polishing bath. The polka dot pattern diminishedin this area as a result of the cleaning. Tne upper half ofthe element remains as found, for a basis rf comparison.See Figure 9. A close-up view of the element showing the ar*aas found and the area cleaned is shown ir Figure 10. In ob-serving the cleaned area, there appeared to be no deleteriouseffects on the wire cloth from prolonged exposure to the propel-lants.

P/N 4-1-10005 Filter assembly is very similar to P/N 1-1-10005except for the size of inlet-outlet flanges and flow rates.This unit is constructed from stainless steel and is Heli-arcwelded. It has the same design features as the 1-1-10005.P/N 4-1-10005 has been in service at Wyle Labs for the pastseven (7) years - it is located in the direct sunlight andhas been used with UDMH and N 0 . The unit has been in con-tinuous service except for oc~alional cleaning. The filterelement appeired to be in very good condition.
The Field Technician interviewed for this data, Mr. AugustFerrira, was considered qualified since he has been employedby Wyle in the specific test area for eight years.

Filter Assembly P/N 28-1-16510 is manufactured from stainlesssteel and is an inline configuration. The element is a ser-viceable, permanent-type filter, with element easily removedfor cleaning or replacerent.
The element, although relatively small in size (about 2 incheslong) has approximately 12 square inches of screen. The FilterElement is manufactured from 304 stainless steel and is Heli-arc welded. Another feature of the element is that the supporttube is an integral part of the element assembly.

This unit has been in service for 7-1/2 years at Wyle Laborator-Les, Norco Test Facility. The fluids used with this systemhave been UDtI and 30'.. The operating pressure is 150 PSIflow rate 200 GPM. 4h6 40 micron nominal filter element hasa clean pressure drop below 5 PSI. The assembly is constructedof 100% stainless steel.
The filter element is manufactured of 304 stainless steel,Dutch Twilled wire cloth and is 100% Heli-arc welded. Thefilter assembly is installed in an enclosure and is exposedto partial sunlight and weather. Close visual inspection ofthe element shows no evidence of screen deterioration.

Capitol Westward Filter Assembly P/N 2524-4 has been in usein the vertical engine test stand system at TRW, ban Juan Capi-strano Test Site. There are 6 fuel and 6 oxidizer units atthis location. According to personnel in charge, the unitsare performing well and have been in use for the past threeyears.
Photographs are included, showing test stand installation.
The filter assembly is the pot-type configuration with 3-inchinlet and outlet flanges. The flow rate is 120 GPM and operat-ing pressure is 600 PSI through a 10 micron filter. The filterelement P/N 6469 is Heli-arc welded 304 stainless steel DutchTwilled wire cloth. A feature of this unit is that the ele-ment can be removed for cleaning or servicing without break-ing the lines.
Figures 15 through 19 are photographs showing the locatingof the filter assemblies and the surrounding environment.Figure 19 shows the test stand. Figure 1i shows a closerview of the test stand with the filter assemblies in view.Figures 17 and 18 are close-up views of the test stand withfilters off to the side. Figure 19 is a close-up of the largefilter units installation.

Filter assevhly P/N 10270 was designed and manufactured byCapitol Westward for use in CLF and was installed at TRWTest Systems, San Juan CapistraAo, in the HEPS (High EnergyPropellant Stand) area.
The filter assembly, an inline configuration, has MS 33656-16ports at each end. The filter element, P/N q561, is Heli-arcwelded using 304 stainless steel wire cloth.
The first element used in this system, when taken out andcleaned, reacted and burned up because of over temperaturein passivation. It was then replaced with a npw element whichhas remained in service for 1-1/2 years Unharmed.
The enclosed photograph shows the inline filter assembly in-stalled in a vertical position. See Figure 2J.

P/N 106586 is a stainless steel filter used in the Hydrogen
Peroxide test servicing cart for the X-15 aircraft. The
manufacturer is Western Filter Company.
The Filter Element is made of stainless steel in its entirsty
for comp"tibility with Hydrogen Peroxide. The filters are eight
years old and have been in a 9M Peroxide solution continuously
except when removed for cleaning. The element is about 8 inches
in length and approximately 1-1/4 inches in diameter. The
filter element is resistance welded using 304 stainless steel
Dutch Twilled wire screening. According to the NASA personnel,
the filter element has beer '-'rforming well. Close inspection
indicates no detrimental e .ts or the screen. The Filter
Assembly has female threaded end fittings. The unit, a 10
micron filter, operates at 25 PSI with a flow rate of 4 to
5 GPM.
The Supervisor of Vehicle Maintenance, Mr. John Russell, was
interviewed for this data. He is considered to be well
qualified to comment since he has been with NASA at this
facility approximately fifteen years.

The fabrication of Western Filter Company filter assemblyP/N 321060 was to demonstrate the superior compatibility ofnickel as a filter media for use with Fluorine. Because of thedesire to reduce the number of unknowns the unit was made ofall nickel and a nickel seal was used. The compatibility ofthe nickel element was demonstrated, as is evidenced by thedata provided by the Douglas Company. However, some assemblyand disassembly difficulty was encountered due to the gallingof similar materials.
Although the unit was designed to perform a function of a fil-ter, the Douglas Company desired to conduct a bubble pointtest with a surface tension device in liquid Fluorine. A co-operative effort was established for Western Filter to provideDouglas a nickel surface tension device for the bubble pointtest and Douglas would conduct a compatibility test on the filterassembly. The filter element was used as the surface tensiondevice for the bubble point test (see Figure 46) and then testedas a filter (see Figure 45)

DESCRIPTION OF COMPATIBILITY TEST SET-UP P/N 20319
The test apparatus used is illustrated in Figure 46, consistsof a Kovar-Pyrex adapter made from a Kovar-lyrex glass metalseal, 1.25" OD.
The end of the 4" tube was bent 90° and reduced to 1/4" ODglass tube ( incheb long.
The adapter was , onnected with an AN fitting to the downstreamsid..• of the Western Filterassembly by flaring the Kovar tubeend. T,-h upstr.3am side of the filter is connected to a 1/2" lineGaseous nelium is introduced on the upstream side and measuredby a Heise precision pressure gauge. The downstream pressuregage was a compou-1 vacuum pressure type.
The -ilter test -issembly was fluorine cleaned by vagor degreasedin F.r-eon and baked dry (vacuum) for 24 hours at 105 C.
The test unit is assembled and then cooled in a Dewar to -320°F(see Figure 2).1F is condensed from scrubbed GF2 into the test unit. A slow
GHe sweep on the downstream side of the test unit is turnedon and passes out through a disposal line.
The upstream side of the test unit is pressurized with GHe.The GHe pressure is reduced until gas bubbling stops and thepressure is again recorded. The differences between thesetwo pressures is reported as the gas breakthrough pressure(see Table 1).
The level of LF2 during GHe pressurization was above the 6"sight level.
After the test, the LF was disposed, the filter was removedand examined for signihicant D ,-rosion attack. None was ob-served.

Filter Assembly P/N 28-1-16510 is manufactured from 304 stain-less steel. It is an inline configuration. The element P/N9-1-500-5 is a serviceable, permanent-type filter easily re-moved for cleaning or replacement.
Items 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, Filter Element P/N 9-1-500-5 (seeFigures 48 and 49) have been in continuous use at MarquardtMagic Mountain test facility for two years. These five fil-ter elements have been in contact with Hydrazine and Nitrogentetroxide. Items 1, 2, and 3 have been in Hydrazine; Items4 and 5 have been in Nitrogen tetroxiue. The five units wereborrowed from Marquardt and brought tr Western Filter for ex-amination. A bubble point test was ,:unaucted on each unit.After the bubble point test, each filter Qiement was submergedin isopropyl alcohol at +150 F and ultrasonically cleaned for1 1/2 hours in a DeltaSonic Model DS850. The elements wererinsed with deionized water and .!ried in an oven.

Conclusions
Based on the similarity between micronic filter elementsand surface force orientation devices and the 96 filterelements surveyed and inspected by Western Filter Company,the following may be concluded:qI1. Micronic stainless steel devices are compatible with
"storable oxidizers and fuels when in contact with thesepropellants for long periods of time.
2. Long term storaqe of stainless steel screen devices inN2 04 , CLF5 , CLF3 , and amine fuels does not cause degra-
dation in the surface tension chaiactcristics of thedevices.
3. Fine mesh screen devices must be thoroughly cleanedbefore being used with corrnsi-e ptrioellants in orderto insure no deterioration of t:c device. The deterior-ration of the filter element reported in Case History#17 was due to improper cleaniA-, which resulted indeterioration of the device when ised in IRFNA.

A It is recommended that the Rocket PropulsionLaboratory advise all Air Force Contractors andGovernment Agencies utilizinq high energy propel-lant, or who have utilized such fluids in thepast, to inventory installation of Filters inuse, or on the active status, and to hold suchhardware and records for future evaluation.
B It is recommended that a Liaison team be estab-lished to visit those activities to review suchfilters or installation which would representvaluable candidate case histories.
C It is recommended that the case histiries be docu-mented and the candidate anits acquired.
D It is recommended that an organizatiorn with capa-bility to provide Testing Spectrographic Analy-sis and Documentation be given case historiesand units acquired for analysis
