GC Intent: To establish a program that will run from FY 2013/14 to FY 2020/21 to commemorate the numerous anniversaries of historical events that will occur in that period, focusing primarily on the centennial of the First World War and the 75th anniversary of the Second World War. The program will also tie into the Road to 2017 – Canada’s 150th.

National Sentry Program – 2015 (In progress)Lead: DND

Dates: 9 April to 10 November every year until 2020.

Location: Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Ottawa, ON.

Descriptor:

•Schedule incorporates L1 representation on significant dates such as Battle of the Atlantic and Battle of Britain.

•Units commemorating battle honours or significant regimental anniversaries will be present in shifts of up to three weeks’ duration.

•Final rotation in 2015 is Tri-Service in the lead-up to Remembrance Day.

Enhancements for 2015:•Increased force protection including permanent presence by an appropriate police service.

•Stanchions, sentry boxes and signage to preserve sanctity of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier while maintaining public access.

•Standardized ceremonial protocols for paying respects and wreath-laying.

Valour Building Plaque UnveilingLead: DND

Dates: 25 May 2015

Location: 151 Sparks Street, Ottawa, ON.

Descriptor:

•A plaque will be unveiled by the MND which will be placed at the entrance to the Valour Building.

•Invitations to selected VIPs, 18 Star of Military Valour recipients and two families of fallen SMV recipients.

•MND to unveil the plaque during a short ceremony followed by lunch for the recipients of the Star of Military Valour and guests.

Background:

•The La Promenade Building, located in the Parliamentary Precinct, was renamed “The Valour Building” to commemorate the heroic contributions and ultimate sacrifices made by military heroes and Canadian civilians during the 12-year military mission in Afghanistan.

•The building’s new name was announced on May 8, 2014, on the eve of the National Day of Honour.

Background:

•Richmond Landing was a small settlement started in 1809 with Jehiel Collins' store, which preceded Bytown in present day Ottawa. It was located just south of Victoria Island east of the present-day Portage Bridge in present day Lebreton Flats.

Kandahar Airfield (KAF) CenotaphLead: DND

Dates: 2017 Completion

Location: Ottawa, ON.

• COA 1 – Carling Campus (Recommended)

• COA 2 – Memorial Route on Richmond Landing

Descriptor:

•Requires construction of a 12m x 25m pavilion to house the KAF Cenotaph in order to protect from the elements.

•Approximate weight is 225,000 kg without the pavilion.

Dates: 2016 – Fall Completion

Location: Begins at Cartier Square Drill Hall and follows Elgin and Wellington streets to the Canadian War Museum. Ottawa, ON.

Descriptor:

•Announced by GC 12 May

•Joint project funded equally by VAC, PCH, PWGSC and DND.

•Project deliverables include annual tourist guidebook, permanent interpretive panels linking to theme of “In Service to Canada” and web and mobile applications.

•Working Group consists of VAC, PCH, PWGSC, DND and the Canadian War Museum.

•Proposal is to display important military and civilian achievements and commemorative artefacts in the Hall of Honour to:

• Reinforce pride and attachment by highlighting our greatest achievements as a nation and building on the theme of Canada – Strong, Proud and Free.

• Honour Canadians from all backgrounds, military and civilian, whose efforts and achievements have contributed demonstrably to a better Canada, and a better world.

•Final proposal to be presented to Speakers of the House and the Senate for approval.

Canada’s 150th Lead: PCH

Dates: Numerous throughout 2017

Location: Multiple venues across Canada.

Descriptor:

•Mr. Andrew Campbell, previously Vice President of External Relations and Visitor Experience at Parks Canada, was appointed Senior Executive Director of the Canada 150 Federal Secretariat.

•The Canada 150 Federal Secretariat is responsible to ensure that all GC departments and stakeholders are engaged in the planning process.

•SJS to appoint CAF OPI (CJOC J3 SE).

•No funding presently in Op DISTINCTION.

Background:

•The Canada 150 theme is Strong. Proud. Free. — three words that define and characterize present-day Canada.

• A Canada that is a strong model and leader in the world with one of the most robust economies.

• A Canada that is proud of its identity, diversity, innovation, and achievements as well as its natural beauty and resources.

• A Canada that is free with an open, diverse and pluralistic society. This theme enables us to connect with our past, embrace the present, and build toward the future.

•Programming will support and promote activities that align with the Canada 150 vision, which includes three elements:

• Giving Back to Canada: Canadians will be challenged to dream about what the future holds for the next 150 years, and to give back to our country, providing meaningful change and lasting legacies for future generations.
