"Foreign fighters returning from Syria (and now Iraq) pose a grave threat to the U.S. homeland and Western Europe. More than 10,000 foreign fighters have flooded into Syria. Many are fighting alongside extremist groups there and in neighboring Iraq, learningbattlefield skills and absorbing extremist ideology. More than 1,000 of them hold European passports, which (in most cases) would enable them to enter the United States without a visa. Of even greater concern, more than 100 American citizens have traveled to Syria. When these battle hardened, radicalized fighters return to ‐their home countries, they will pose a serious terrorist threat to both the United States and Europe.”

Lt. Gen. Vincent R. Stewart, USMC, Director DIA, briefed the HouseArmed Services Committee on 3 February 2015:– Al Nusrah Front (ANF) is part of ‐the larger al Qa‘ida network‐– ANF supports transnational terrorist attack plotting against U.S./Western interests– AQ being eclipsed by ISIL’s rising global prominence and competition for adherents

“The Khorasan Group is a cadre of experienced al‐Qa‘ida operativesthat works closely with and relies upon al‐Nusrah Front to providepersonnel and space for training facilities in northwestern Syria. Thegroup is primarily focused on transnational terrorist attack plotting.”

“Coalition airstrikes in Syria probably killed a number of senior al‐Nusrah Front and Khorasan Group operatives, but the group almostcertainly has maintained some capability to continue plottingagainst Western interests.”
