Dear Friends,

It is with great enthusiasm that I announce the 2012-13 UNCW Presents, Arts in Action and Leadership Lecture Series season. Our trademark of excellence and eclecticism continues this celebratory season at UNCW amid a host of spectacular world music, provocative opera, exhilarating jazz, old-time bluegrass and much more!

For more than 20 years, UNCW Presents has provided our students, faculty, staff and community members, of all ages, with the best of the arts and humanities from the world over. It has been our goal to enlighten you with new concepts and art forms, as well as expose you to once-forgotten, old world traditions.

It is a privilege to offer my heartfelt thanks to you, our patrons, for your support in keeping live performing arts alive and well in our region.

I am always humbled by the collaborative relationships with the dozens of campus and regional partners we work with to bring the arts to life for our campus and community. To the Cape Fear region and UNCW family, which values cultural awareness, intellectual curiosity and community engagement - Thank you!

Finally, and most importantly, thank you to our students, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to support this important programming. Our office functions as a student laboratory for arts and programs management through which we connect to various academic programs. To our hundreds of student volunteers, interns and our thousands of student patrons, who will be the next generation of arts leaders – Thank you for continuing to carry the torch!

Haitian American violinist and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) performs with N.C. singer/songwriter, Laurelyn Dossett to kick off our season. DBR’s innovative musical style has branded him as a notable innovative composer, performer and bandleader, known for crossing cultural boundaries and mixing genres, collaborating with the likes of Philip Glass and Lady Gaga. His performance at UNCW is part of a larger, state-wide residency project, Connecting Crossroads in North Carolina, which will unveil original works commissioned during DBR’s 2012 visits to communities around the state; the concert will also feature local performers from UNCW and the Wilmington community.

Offering the “ultimate African drum experience”, Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi are one of the greatest percussion ensembles in the world, born out of centuries old tradition. Since the 1960s, they have toured the world, bringing their unique influence to world music. Traditionally, the drummers travelled with Burundi’s kings and played at ceremonies such as births, funerals and coronations. In Burundi, drums represent regeneration, and the techniques the drummers employ have been passed down from father to son for centuries. Energy and sharp rhythms will make this performance the ultimate African drum experience!

We congratulate and thank UNCW Presents for twenty years of superb arts and culture by some of the world’s most talented lecturers and performers. Our DREAMS students have benefited tremendously through UNCW Presents outreach programs; from special dance clinics conducted by master dancers to attending inspiring performances. Squonk Opera’s Mayhem and Majesty is the latest in a series of their truly surreal, genre-busting feats of musical theater. The show “behaves like a three-dimensional Rorschach test,” conveying meaning through music and a visual symphony of performance art, stage settings and theatrics, incorporating shadow puppetry, kinetic machines, cameras and video screens. Mayhem and Majesty is accessible modern opera at its most spellbinding.

Alaska based, bluegrass quintet Bearfoot bring their unique sound to a variety of American music genres from bluegrass to Cajun to blues. The Telluride award winning band’s first album, Doors and Windows, featuring the Bearfoot signature bluegrass without a banjo, topped the Billboard bluegrass charts upon release. The band’s new album, American Story, has been described by Larry Vanderpool of Awaiting the Flood as “the perfect blend of bluegrass, pop, country and old time American folk styles of music.”

Creativity is an essential part of life, so we offer opportunities for you to broaden and deepen your experience with UNCW Presents. Throughout the year, you will find numerous ways to connect directly with artists and ideas through Above & Beyond.

These are programs and services that extend beyond the performance or lecture to provide campus and community participants with a variety of opportunities to interact with professional artists and guest speakers, to gain insight into the artistic process and to further explore the content and issues of artists’ work. Residency activities range from master classes and workshops to interviews and panel discussions. Designed to enrich and add a new perspective to performances and lectures, these activities are free and open to the public and are held on the UNCW campus in addition to visits to local non-profit organizations and schools.

International Cinema Series Your Ticket to See the WorldEach academic year, the International Cinema Series features a diverse program that includes important, critically acclaimed and contemporary films from around the world in Lumina Theater at UNCW. The series is presented in partnership with the Association for Campus Entertainment (ACE), academic departments and university offices. Films are shown during the fall and spring semesters on select Thursdays of each month. Screenings begin at 7 p.m. and may include a brief introduction by a UNCW faculty or staff member. Films are open to the public and subtitled in English. For ticket pricing and schedule information for specific films, visit www.uncw.edu/lumina. Ann Flack Boseman Gallery The Ann Flack Boseman Gallery offers visual arts enthusiasts a variety of media from photography to sculpture on exhibit year round and serves as a student laboratory for gallery management. Exhibitions showcase work by UNCW student, regional and international artists. The Boseman Gallery is run by the Association for Campus Entertainment’s Boseman Gallery Committee which is overseen by a student chair, staff advisor and curator. The committee of students reviews and takes the lead in steering the gallery’s programming. The Boseman Gallery is located on the second floor of the Fisher University Union. All programs are free and open to the public.

University Union Permanent Art CollectionSince its inception in 1995, the University Union at UNCW has been building a unique collection of primarily student work to display throughout the Campus Life facilities, including the Fisher University Union, Fisher Student Center, and Burney Center. Toronto artist Evalyn Perry’s tour-de-force celebrates the bicycle as muse, musical instrument and agent of social change. Inspired by the true tale of Annie Londonberry, the first woman to ride around the world on a bicycle in 1894, this hypnotic hybrid of music, theatre and spoken word features a bicycle as an unimaginably rich source of percussive accompaniment.

Seating Policy. All seats are reserved for Arts in Action performances in Kenan Auditorium; Leadership Lectures are general seating in Burney Center. Doors open approximately one-half hour before curtain time. As a courtesy to performers and audience members, latecomers will not be seated until a suitable pause in the program.

Miscellaneous. Parents should exercise discretion in deciding which events are appropriate for their children. No refunds on ticket purchases, unless event is cancelled. All events are subject to change.

Tax Deductible Contribution. Please consider a contribution in support of UNCW Presents when you send in your ticket order. The price of your ticket covers only a portion of the cost of programming. Our primary financial support comes from the students of UNCW, and we do not receive state-appropriated operating funds. Your donation will help ensure the continued presentation of the highest caliber of performing artists and speakers in our community.

The performance and residency by DBR (Connecting Crossroads in North Carolina) is supported by South Arts with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts. The performance and residency by DBR (Connecting Crossroads in North Carolina) and Dali Quartet is supported by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. Package includes 7 performances at Kenan auditorium plus a special discount to the Thalian Hall show. If you are renewing a subscription, we must receive your request by august 17, 2012.

Choose-Your-Own Series Select 3 or more events using the $4 discount column. Multiple tickets for one event do not count as separate events. CYO subscriptions are processed after mainstage subscriptions, but before we process orders for single tickets.

Single Tickets You may order tickets for individual performances beginning Wednesday, august 22, 2012.

Students: The Student discount for arts in action ($5 per ticket) applies to UNCW, university, college and K-12 students. UNCW students may purchase up to 2 tickets at this price with a valid student ID at Kenan auditorium Box Office.

UNCW Faculty/Staff, Alumni & Parents: Use the $4 discount prices. UNCW faculty/staff members must present a current campus ID at the time of purchase. UNCW alumni association members and parents of current UNCW students should use the $4 off price.
