Three Categories of Lighting Under Cabinet Fixtures

General or AmbientLighting that illuminates the entire room as opposed to specific areas. This type of light generally comes from several directions and provides an even, open feeling.

Task LightingLighting that specifically brightens work surfaces such as: countertops, sinks, ranges, eating areas, work benches, and other areas where really bright light is needed in a specific area.

Accent LightingLighting that focuses attention on specific areas or objects as opposed to the entire room. Accent lighting can add interest by creating various effects from romantic to dramatic.

Different fixtures are used to achieve the categories of lighting. Here’s a brief description of the most common types.
