India mesmerises
ust contrary to the fears of our country’s Jimage taking a beating for withdrawing
from the mega event amidst allegations of
misappropriation of funds, lack of
preparations and a host of other issues,
India organises Commonwealth Games
rather very successfully. Apart from us
attaining the prestigious second rank in the
medal tally, the organisation of the functions
too was simply superb, consolidating our
position as an emerging superpower.

wo recent happenings have catapulted India's image to a new high. TThe first being the Ayodhya verdict. The balanced judgment was
welcomed by one and all. Besides, the political parties, religious heads and
the general public behaved very positively towards the historical judicial
pronouncement. This welcome change has strengthened the country's
secular credentials and it is rightly termed as “The Triumph of Sanity”.
The second happening being the successful conduct of XIX
Commonwealth Games by India against all odds and among the worst fears
of country's image receiving a severe beating. Apart from India's 2nd
ranking in winning the medals, the organization of the event too boosted our
image globally. The euphoria should not, however, make us complacent.
The wonderful performance by Indian sportspersons has re-iterated
the fact that India has no dearth of talent, but it needs to be nurtured
carefully by the coaches. Besides, the Government must release adequate
funds for the process to be implemented with enthusiastic zest.
A great number of Gagan Narangs and Saina Nahewals are waiting
for their latent talent to be released by the fullest support from their
families, the Government, some dedicated organisations, and the coaches
who would mentor and guide them to unfold the potential they possess.
With greetings,

“We intend to formalise a symbol for the Indian rupee,
which would reflect and capture the Indian ethos and

Evoking national spirit and international attention,
Indian rupee attained a new avatar in its new symbol. A
distinct identity with a blend of the Devanagri ‘ j ' and
Roman ‘R', the Indian currency will be joining the elite
club of the U.S. Dollar, the European Euro, the British
Pound Sterling and the Japanese Yen. This would
distinguish the Indian currency from its neighbouring
countries - Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Indonesia,
having similarly known Rupee or Rupiah as their
currency.
vIt speaks volumes about the growing
strength of India rupee vis-a-vis US dollar
and other strong currencies of the world.
vIt would distinguish the Indian currency from
those countries whose currencies are also
designed as Rupee or Rupiah, such as Pakistan,
Nepal, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
vThe symbol will not be printed or embossed on
currency notes or coins.
vIt would be included in the “Unicode Standard”
and major scripts of the world to ensure that it
is easily displayed and printed in the electronic

that you normally behave then don't try to
become someone else. Your personality and
enthusiasm are as important as everything else.
SMILE : A nervous smile is better than no smile
at all. No one wants to recruit a grumpy person
or someone who looks like they are not enjoying
themselves. Smile lightly also when you are
being introduced to each member of your panel.
This is important to create a rapport.
MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT : If you do not
make an eye contact, you will come across as

BEWARE OF THE PROPS: If you have a pen
with you, avoid fiddling with it. Similarly, if
they offer you tea or coffee etc., make sure that
you can cope with it.
MIRROR THE INTERVIEWER'S
BEHAVIOUR : Mirroring (i.e. acting similarly)

connection. It generally happens normally, but
you may be able to influence it too, if only to
give the interviewer that impression.

Bearing in mind that body language is a
reflection of your level of confidence.

reflect upon and adopt:
CHOOSE A GOOD POSITION : In an
interview, you will normally be directed to a
specific seat. However, interviews can often be
conducted in oversized environments. In such a
situation, make sure that you choose a seat
which enables you to see everyone involved
without having to rotate your head
exaggeratedly.
RIGHT POSTURE : Plant both feet onto the
ground so that you remain stable and put your
hands on the table. Keep yourself upright, with
a slight slant forward and relax our shoulders.
DON'T BE AFRAID TO "OWN THE
SPACE”: It is okay to stand or sit with your
legs slightly apart, and in fact, it is a sign of
confidence.
LIMIT YOUR HAND AND ARM
MOVEMENT: It is perfectly okay to move your
arms and hands around, and if that is the way
Facing Interviews
Interview skills and communication
skills are not just about speech
techniques one follows. Up to 60%
of the impression that you make is
through your body language.
Whatever the reality behind this
statement, it is undoubtable that
the way you dress and behave at
an interview will strongly influence
the person who is looking at you,
even if it is subconscious.
“ A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to
visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into
complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the
professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee
and an assortment of cups- porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain
looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help
themselves to hot coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: “If
you will notice, all the nice looking and expensive cups were taken up,
leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. What all of you really wanted
was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups and
were eyeing each other’s cups. The source of your problems and stress
is that you want only the best for yourselves. Remember, if life is coffee,
then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just
tools to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life doesn’t change.
“Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the
coffee in it.”
he morale of the story is that God makes the coffee, man Tchooses the cups. The only source of happiness and
unhappiness comes from within ourselves. The happiest people
don’t have the best of everything. They just make the best of
everything they get.
We often fall into the trap of thinking that a new car, job
promotion, beauty makeover, or some level of fame will make
us happy. And often they do for a time being. But it never lasts
because wealth, power, beauty and fame simply don’t bring
lasting happiness, as much as we wish they would. Rather,
true happiness comes from developing and
following some attributes such as goodness, love,
justice and compassion. It comes from serving
others and helping them in every way we can.
Happiness does not emanate from the wealth,
fame, position or anything else, but it comes
from what you already have in life. If you love
what you have, then your life will always be full
of happiness.
Says David Leonhardt: “Genuine happiness
comes from contentment. Failures of any kind
should not hinder our happiness. So to
experience true happiness - live simply, love
generously, care deeply and speak kindly.”

It may befall and make some computer

affects Unix like dating system which represent
system time as the number of seconds (ignoring
leap seconds) since 00:00:00 was 12:00am on

software written for most other operating

latest time that
can be

this format following the posix standard, is
03:14:07 UTC on Thursday, January 19, 2038.
Times beyond this moment will “wrap around”
and be represented internally, as a negative
number and cause programs to fail, since they
will see these times as being not in 2038, but
rather in 1901.
Erroneous calculations and decisions may,

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF
LIFE?One day, I showed my hand to an astrologer. I

I later told the whole story to my mother.
She said, “You asked him many questions about

simple question. She laughed and said, “Life is

She further remarked, “It is like a stage where

vDon't try to hide vital information in a resume.
Any attempt to do so is likely to backfire on you
at the interview or afterwards. Make it easy for
the recruiter to find all the information they
need about your career.
vA resume is meant to be a short, succinct

Therefore, avoid including unnecessary

vIf you have significant gaps in your job history,
be prepared to explain for them fully. This is

oing the right thing, in the right way and Dat the right time will produce the results
you want, and deliver the goods. In other
words, knowing what to do, when, where and
how is the master-key to your success. Gain
knowledge and get ideas. Know the things over
which you have power and shape them to your
advantage. Learn and analyze your strengths
and weaknesses. Achieve and accomplish
through study and practice. You have total
power over your attitudes, outlook and conduct.
Think positively and act decisively.
Appreciate what others do for you and make
the appreciation come from heart. People crave
for recognition and appreciation. It is all in
what you say and how you say it. Everyone
looks forward to good listeners. Therefore, be a
good
listener. It is better and wiser to listen with
interest when you have urge to talk.
Encourage the other person to talk. One learns
and gets to know by listening. You get the
advantage when you listen and lose it when
you talk.
You can make people feel important by asking
them to talk and tell you about their
accomplishments and achievements. Let them

uccessful people know that there is Sreason for everything they desire and every success has an appropriate place and time for its accomplishment. Towards that end, they set their priorities in a certain order, prepare themselves and refuse to give in to discouragements along the way. The beginning of the success is with a true real-life dream.
What about those who are unsuccessful? Some fail because of their lack of dreams and some because they do not believe in the possibilities of dreams becoming a reality. Many fail because they have not turned their dream into a specific goal and a plan for action for reaching their goal. Many a failure arises not from a lack of determination to keep trying but from efforts that are out of proper sequence. The result is that those who fail in fulfilling their dreams become frustrated. They begin to believe that it is impossible for them to achieve anything worthwhile and soon develop a negative attitude toward life. So, always think positive, strive to make your dreams come true and you will be crowned by success.

Between 1930 and 2000, global production of

While some chemicals bring significant benefits
to society through their use in healthcare for

Man-made chemicals are in use all around us in
pesticides to cosmetics and baby bottles to

Hazardous man-made chemicals have

There is particular concern about 3 types of
chemicals in use today. These are:
vVery persistent and very bioaccumulative
chemicals that break down slowly or not at

vEndochrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs)

lorence Nightingale was born on 12 May F1820 at the Villa La Columbaia in Florence,
Italy. She was named after the city of her birth.
Florence Nightingale had a broad education
and came to dislike the lack of opportunities for
females in her social circle. She began to visit
the poor but became very interested in looking
after those who were ill. Once she heard about a
woman dying for the lack of nursing care
(because nursing profession was looked down
upon by the society during that period of time).
Her tender heart was badly moved by the
incident and she decided to dedicate her life
towards service to the sick people. In 1851, she
spent four months at Kaiserswerth, training as
a sick nurse. When she returned home, she
undertook more visits to London hospitals; in
the autumn of 1852 she inspected hospitals in
Edinburgh and Dublin. In 1853, she accepted
her first administrative post when she became
superintendent of the Hospital for invalid
people.
In March 1854 the Crimean War broke out
Nightingale offered her services to the War
Office on 14 October. She was on her feet for
twenty hours a day and her nurses were also
overworked; The wounded men called her 'The
Lady of the Lamp.' She received the Order of
Merit in 1907 and in 1908 received the
German order of the Cross of Merit and the
French gold medal of Secours aux Blessés
Militaires. On 10 May 1910 she was presented
with the badge of honour of the Norwegian Red
Cross Society.
Nightingale passed away on 13 August 1910
but only after providing the nursing profession
the much-needed social acceptability and
dignity.
