    Thetis

The sea-nymph Thetis with the power ofmetamorphosis.

She was loved by both Zeus, king of thegods, and Poseidon, god of the sea.

However, their ardour was cooled whenthey learned that Thetis' son was destinedto be greater than his father.

The gods decided that Thetis should bemade to marry a mortal, Peleus, in orderthat her son, however powerful, shouldpresent no threat to the gods.

The child she gave birth to was Achilles.
