    Update: 6-15-20

How CLAS Advising Works The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) utilizes a shared-advising system, which means all undergraduate students in a CLAS major have a minimum of two academic advisors with whom they work throughout their time at CU Denver. CLAS Academic Advisors work with students regarding CU Denver Core Curriculum and graduation requirements, and CLAS graduation requirements, as well as university and college policies and procedures. Faculty mentors/advisors work with students on their major and/or requirements within their respective academic departments. Both advisors monitor students’ degree progress and approve graduation eligibility.

The Center for Undergraduate Exploration & Advising (CUE&A) advises students who are undecided about their college major (i.e., undeclared) or who are pre-architecture. CUE&A is located in Student Commons Building 1113 and can be reached at 303-315-1940.

    Degree Audit and Transfer Evaluations

DEGREE AUDIT The degree audit is an online tool intended to help students track degree requirements. It is important to note the degree audit:

is intended to be used in consultation with your CLAS and major advisors

is subject to change based on program changes (i.e.: changing your major) or if there are changes or additions to your Transfer Evaluation

provides point-in-time information - it can change if your course registration changes or a course is not successfully completed

Note: The degree audit is not considered an official tool for graduation. To verify graduation eligibility you must meet with your CLAS advisor and Major/Minor advisors.

TRANSFER EVALUATIONS The transfer evaluations on your degree audit show you how your transfer courses are accepted by CU Denver and awarded credit. Transfer courses taken at a lower-division (1000-2000 level), even if equated to an upper-division (3000-4000 level) course at CU Denver will be considered lower-division and will not apply toward the 45 credit upper-division CLAS graduation requirement. Transfer courses that have been accepted will be listed in one of the following ways: _ _ _ _#999TC

may be transferrable to CU Denver but has not yet been evaluated

transferability of “TC” courses is not guaranteed

If the course(s) fall within a CLAS discipline, the course is currently under review to determine its transferability and applicability to degree requirements. Once the official evaluation is complete, your Transfer Evaluation and Degree Audit will be updated. Contact your CLAS advisor with any questions/concerns regarding the evaluation of your “TC” courses. You may be asked to provide additional documentation to support the evaluation, such as a syllabus, assignments, papers, exams. The review process should be complete by the end of your first semester, as long as additional documents are not required.

Note: Until the “TC” course has been officially evaluated do not take any similar or possible equivalent courses without first talking with your CLAS and major advisors.

    _ _ _ _#999AE

has officially been accepted by CU Denver as a generic transfer course and credit has been awarded

is not equivalent to a specific course(s) taught at CU Denver, but may apply to CU Denver Core Curriculum, CLAS, graduation and/or major requirements. Your CLAS and major advisor will assist you in determining if/how the course may apply toward your degree requirements.

    Direct Equivalency (e.g., HIST1455)

has been deemed equivalent to the course listed.

can be applied to degree requirements in a similar manner as if the course were taken at CU Denver.

Note: You should not take the same course at CU Denver or you will lose credit for the transfer course.

    Appealing Transfer Course Evaluation Decisions

Students may appeal transfer evaluation decisions for courses that are not accepted in initial transfer or are from institutions not regionally accredited. The designated faculty within each degree program are responsible for determining whether its program will award credit for coursework based on the academic rigor, level, nature (scope), content and learning outcomes. A decision will typically be made within the student’s first semester of enrollment at CU Denver at which point any updates will be reflected on the student’s degree audit. Courses Not Accepted in Transfer CU Denver does not award transfer credit for courses that are:

Courses at non-CU institutions with grades below C- (1.7)

    Remedial, developmental, or vocational/technical courses

outdoor leadership education courses *Appeals for transfer courses that fall within one of these categories will not be approved.

The following courses are not accepted in initial transfer, but exceptions may be granted by the dean responsible for the student’s curriculum.

courses for which CU Denver does not have a program

courses that constitute specialized religious training, are doctrinal in nature or cover a single religion

    college orientation courses

independent study, special topics, internships, experiential learning, or graduate/professional courses *Students with transfer courses that fall within one of the categories not accepted in initial transfer can submit an appeal to see if transfer credit may be awarded. It is important to note that appeal approval is not guaranteed.

Courses from Institutions Not Regionally Accredited (Transferring Undergraduate Credit policy 7006) The designated faculty of each degree program is responsible for determining whether its program will award credit for coursework taken at institutions not regionally accredited. The following considerations will assist faculty in determining whether to grant credit:

Coursework has content and rigor appropriate to meet university standards, including ensuring that the instructional faculty who deliver coursework have credentials

Coursework materials define expected learning outcomes

Coursework employs appropriate assessment measures to ascertain whether 5 desired student learning outcomes have been achieved

Coursework is comparable in nature, content and level to the learning experience offered by the university

Appeal Submission Students should send an email to [email protected] with the following information:
