Traveled with a team of Catholic University architecture students to Santa Rosa, Honduras. There we constructed an academic center for the local children. The school’s design implemented passive strategies and used sustainable materials from the local area. Our group was responsible for the following construction tasks: laying CMU blocks, foundation work and mixing concrete/mortar.

DC Incarcerated Youth ProgramFall 2012 Teaching AssistantThe Incarcerated Youth Program at the District of Columbia Jail provides academic services to students between 16 and 22 years old. This opportunity allowed me to educate students about architecture, and get them interested in the fields of math, art and science.

The initial design concept creates a structure that filters the view of the White House through a pure glass form which occupies the center of historic Lafayette Square. The cube alters the main site line down 16th Street, while providing a monumental space for people to gather.

The Tenley Town Theatre is located adjacent to the Tenley Town Metro in NW Washington D.C. The theatre deploys the theme of vantage within its main design strategies. The major atrium space offers split levels. Here the theatre audience can enjoy food and drink in the midst of the canyon like interior, viewing people passing up and down through the breakout spaces. The scale of this space humbles the audience as they await the main performance.

The following project asked us to analyze a site along H st. in Northeast D.C., and to design a bikram yoga studio in this location. The site is a few miles from Union Station, and is at the beginning of the H st. corridor, which is an up-and-coming area of D.C.. The revitalization of this area is becoming more noticeable, and young professionals are moving into the surrounding neighborhoods.

For this assignment, our professor asked us to have a unique experience on our site. The

picture below is of us flying a homemade kite. This experience ultimately influenced the form of my

yoga studio. The design’s main focus is to harness sunlight through kite shaped planes and filter this light

backward into the interior spaces. Another focus of the design was to incorporate the theme of balance into the

exterior and interior spaces. The entire floor is slightly off balance intentionally. Once you reach the yoga studio,

here you find your balance. The two studios are the only rooms with a perfectly level floor. The circulation throughout

the building is intended to act like the string of the kite.

The goal of this assignment was to choose a cubist era painting, and create a model showing circulation through the artwork's layers. The painting I chose was Comic Wedlock by Francis Picabia. This work was completed in 1914, and is currently owned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

This group installation project followed a material study, in which we explored the effects of blow torching aluminum sheets. By heating the aluminum and puncturing holes in it, we achieved a golden brown array of colors. This allowed us to reflect the harsh natural light from above, and soften the light filtering through the canopy onto the first floor. The focus of the project was to be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional in the way it improved lighting conditions. We were paired with a team exploring plastic tubing, which provided excellent overall structural support for the Canopy surface.

The concept behind this project was to choose a word to define your model’s concept. The word I chose was dialogue. We were given guidelines for the kit of parts we could use for the model, except for the roof. There were no restrictions to the type of roof we chose. My concept used the word dialogue and looked at it from internal and external perspectives.

The interior room underneath the roof serves as a place for internal dialogue to occur. Here the three light portals reflect off the mirrored floor of the interior space to provide illumination. These light portals also create a bridge from the internal dialogue to the external world.

The two reflecting pools create an external dialogue and provide different paths to the monolith in the back corner, which represents the end or solution reached by the dialogue.

This assignment challenged us to recreate a furniture piece from an architect we learned about in class. I chose the Bauhaus Chess set, originally designed by Josef Hartwig for the Leipzig World Fair in 1924. The pieces are shaped to represent the way that they move across the board, giving a modern and unique feel to the chess set.
