I give master classes in children’s literature and attend official occasions, but I also like to stroll round the beautiful campus and chat to the students. They all seem so happy here, and make friends quickly.

The quality and range of our courses are well known, and there’s a serious work ethic amongst our students, but they certainly know how to have fun too. There are many clubs, sporting activities and dances, culminating in our incredible Summer Ball. Our magnificent state-of-the-art library is a great place to hang out, as is the cool Hive Café run by the Students’ Union.

Roehampton prides itself on welcoming students from all over the world. Whether you’re the life and soul of the party or shy and studious, you will feel at home here.

Professor Dame Jacqueline Wilson Chancellor

WelcomeI’m very proud to be the Chancellor at Roehampton. It’s the ideal university: friendly, modern, high-achieving, and forward thinking.

Roehampton is a very special university. We have a proud history stretching back over 175 years and are the only campus based collegiate university in London. Our four Colleges provide a strong sense of community, and our size means you will get to know those that teach you and those you study with.

At Roehampton we pride ourselves on helping all students, regardless of their background, to develop the skills they need for a successful graduate career and fulfilling life.

The student experience is at the heart of everything we do. We work in partnership with students to make sure that every moment at Roehampton matters.

We believe that a university education is not just about getting a great degree, but also broadening your experiences, preparing yourself for the world of work, and making lifelong friendships.

A Roehampton degree is designed to ensure that you graduate with the qualities you need to succeed: confidence, adaptability and the capacity to work with people from all walks of life.

We hope to see you at Roehampton soon.

Digby Stuart College

College history and ethos

Digby Stuart College owes its existence to the Society of the Sacred Heart, an order of French Sisters who came to England in 1842. The rich history of the Society in the education of women, and the dedication to issues of social justice and equality, now provides Digby College with a common concern for fostering a kind and loving community, where we welcome all students.

Digby Stuart today

Digby is the largest of the four Colleges at Roehampton, and home to four academic departments: English and Creative Writing, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Drama, Theatre and Performance. Digby strives to give everyone a sense of belonging, in a community that cares about individuals.

There is a regular programme of social activities and events to appeal to all tastes, such as the annual lecture and a summer strawberry tea. The chaplaincy base, which organises a lunch every Tuesday, is also located at Digby.

The elected student leaders are an important voice in how business is conducted at the College and help them to be responsive and relevant.

Froebel College

College history and ethos

Froebel College is one of the oldest higher education establishments in the UK, having been founded in 1892. The College takes its name from Friedrich Froebel, a German educational pioneer, who encouraged the use of play as an important part of a child’s development.

Froebel today

The focus on education continues to this day, with the School of Education being a major part of the College and a leading centre for Initial Teacher Education. The internationally renowned Department of Dance is also resident at Froebel College, with its superb facilities and modern dance studios. Froebel is also home to the Roehampton Students’ Union, the Union Bar and the Gym.

Froebel has an extensive calendar of social events including a formal Freshers’ Welcome Dinner, the College Winter Dinner, a summer celebration and many other smaller on-campus or off-campus events organised by our student leaders.

Southlands College

College history and ethos

Southlands was founded in 1872 to train women to teach in Methodist schools in some of the poorest parts of Britain. The College today builds on its history by encouraging young people to develop strong values and to grow as future leaders for their communities.

Southlands today

Life at Southlands is busy and diverse. There is an exciting annual calendar of events, including termly dinners, a fireworks party, music gala dinner, Southlands Shindig (our summer fête) and College boat party. The large social space is a café during the day and each evening transforms into a cinema and

hub for student-led events. Southlands offers a number of leadership development opportunities, including roles on the College Officer Committee and with the Southlands Venture: a volunteering programme which funds student-led projects in the local community. Their mascot is the Shark and the College sports teams – the ‘Sharks’ and the ‘Sharkettes’ – are a credit to our community, succeeding in sport and also running fundraising and campaigning efforts.

Whether you join by living at Southlands or as a non-resident student of the departments – the Business School and Media, Culture and Language – we very much look forward to welcoming you here.

roehampton.ac.uk/colleges/southlands-college

Whitelands College

College history and ethos

Whitelands is the oldest of the four Colleges, founded in 1841 by the Church of England, and was the first institution in England to provide higher education for women.

Whitelands today

The common room at Whitelands, also known as The Sett (the College mascot is a badger) is located on the first floor of Parkstead House. With its glorious views, daytime café facilities and evening bar, it is an ideal setting for socialising at any time of the day, and is the venue for a range of parties and other leisure activities.

The College has an exciting calendar of events throughout the year. In addition to our traditional May Day celebration (running since 1881), we host formal dinners each term, a Christmas fair, carol service and dinner, and Science Week, together with many other smaller social events organised by our student leaders. All are open to resident and non-resident students, and to staff.

Whitelands is home to two academic departments – Psychology and Life Sciences – and the Ministerial Theology programme.

This degree will help you understand how societies are created and how they change. You will learn how educational attainment, ethnicity, gender and geography all play a part in people’s place in society, including the resources they accumulate and the networks they build.

Why Roehampton?

We are ranked third in London for Sociology (Guardian University Guide 2017).

91% of Roehampton Sociology graduates in work or further study within six months of graduation (Destinations of Leavers of Higher Education, 2017 results).

Ranked sixth in the UK for the impact of our social sciences research - over half of it is considered to be world-leading or internationally excellent (Research Excellence Framework 2014).

ExtendedDegrees What is an extended degree?

Our extended degrees are four-year programmes which provide an additional year at the beginning of the degree that builds your confidence in your abilities, develops essential academic and study skills, and provides you with subject specific knowledge as a basis for success in your following three years. You will complete core modules as well as an extended project which will develop your skills in carrying out research, using scholarly sources, drawing comparisons between your own research and that of others, and documenting your findings.

We will provide you with a thorough grounding in study skills, including how to structure an essay, referencing and how to use library resources like journals. It will also help you to develop your reading, academic writing and your presentational skills.

Who should apply for an extended degree?

Extended degrees at Roehampton are a great option if you don’t have traditional qualifications or do not meet the requirements to go straight onto an undergraduate degree.

Why Roehampton?

Friendly and inclusive community.

Taught by highly experienced and published researchers – all leading experts in their field.

You will have an extra year to build your skills and knowledge.

How to applyMost students applying for undergraduate study will do so via UCAS (ucas.com).

You can apply for up to five courses at UK higher education institutions using the UCAS service. Please note that UCAS do charge a fee for submitting an application using this route. Once we receive your application from UCAS, we aim to make a decision on it within a few days.

Once you have heard back from all the institutions you have applied to, you need to decide which application will be your ‘firm’ choice (first choice) and your ‘insurance’ choice (second choice). During the time it takes for you to make your decision, we will contact you by email, phone and occasionally by post with more information about studying with us.

You may submit late applications; usually this is by the end of June; however, please be aware that if courses become full, we may not be able to make offers on late applications. After the June deadline, you will only be able to make an application via the UCAS Clearing service.

International students from outside of the EU have the option to apply using the application form on our website at any point in the year.

There is no charge to make an application via this route.

Entry requirements

To find out entry requirements for your specific course, please visit our course pages at:

roehampton.ac.uk

For international and EU students, visit our international pages at:

roehampton.ac.uk/international

For more information on understanding the UCAS tariff and what your qualifications mean in relation to the tariff, please visit:

ucas.com/undergraduate/what-and-where-study/entry-requirements/ucas-tariff-points

International students from non-English speaking countries will be required to meet our English language entry requirements as well as the course entry requirements.

Fees and funding

Tuition fees

The tuition fees are set annually, and are different for home/EU and international students.

Please check our website for the latest fee information including details on part-time fees:

roehampton.ac.uk/student-support/financial-support-and-guidance/

No fees up front

You can apply for a tuition fee loan from the government if you live in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, are classified as a home student and you have secured a place in higher education for studying your first degree.

EU students should check our website for the latest information on fees and tuition fee loans.

Support with living costs

Home students are also eligible for a maintenance loan from the government to help with living costs. Part of the loan is income assessed and the amount you receive will depend on factors such as if you choose to live away from home or not.

If you apply to Roehampton, you will be eligible for a larger loan because the University is based in London. The maximum loan for 2018 entry is currently £11,354. For the most up-to-date information, please see:

gov.uk/student-finance

When do I repay the tuition fee and maintenance loans?

You don’t start repaying any loans until the April after graduation and only once you are working and earning more than £25,000 a year.

If your income drops below this threshold at any point then your repayments would also stop. You repay 9% of your income above £21,000. After 30 years, any outstanding loan is written off.

Extra help

Depending on your individual circumstances, you may also be eligible for extra support from the government in the form of bursaries and grants.

For full details, please see:

gov.uk/student-finance

Getting here

Open Days 2019

The University of Roehampton campus benefits from being at the heart of a busy network of transport links. Whether using 24-hour buses, the tube network at Hammersmith and Putney, or through rail services from Barnes to Waterloo, all points across central and west London are within easy reach of the University.

Bus

Approximately 21 buses an hour stop outside the main entrance of the University.

Buses 72, 265 and the 493 all stop outside the University’s main entrance; Froebel College (Queen Mary’s Hospital bus stop) and a short walk from the entrance to Whitelands College (Roehampton Lane, Danebury Avenue bus stop).

If you are travelling to the Whitelands Campus, the 85, 170 and 430 bus also stop near the entrance. You can see bus routes and track live bus arrivals on the TfL website.

National Rail

The nearest station is Barnes - 8 trains per hour go to Putney, Clapham Junction, Vauxhall and London Waterloo.

Barnes station is 15 minutes’ walk from the University main entrance, or you can take the 72 or 265 bus which stop outside all campuses. Approximately 15 buses per hour run between the station and the University.

Tube

We are a short bus ride away from tube connections at Hammersmith (Circle/Hammersmith & City/District/Piccadilly lines), Shepherd’s Bush (Central) and Putney Bridge (District).

If coming from the direction of Hammersmith/Shepherd’s Bush take the 72 bus to all campuses – or coming from Putney Bridge, take bus 265.

Cycle

Alternatively you can create your own route and timetable by commuting to Roehampton by bike. There are more than 600 cycle spaces dotted around campus.

Car

There is extremely limited parking on campus and in nearby streets. The University is easily accessible by public transport. If you are visiting an Open Day please visit the website for information regarding parking on the day.

Visiting us

Visiting Roehampton is the best way to get a feel for what it’s like to be part of our student community.

Open Days

We understand that choosing a degree is a big decision and we want to help you to make the right choice. The best way to find out everything that Roehampton has to offer is by attending one of our Open Days.

On the day, you can attend two different subject talks and chat to current students and teaching staff about your course interests. You can also tour our beautiful parkland campus, take a look at our range of on-campus accommodation and attend our Student Life Fair with representatives from right across the University.

You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to chat to our current students who are on hand to answer any questions you may have and to tell you their perspective on student life and study at Roehampton. By the end of the day, we hope you will discover that Roehampton is a place where you can feel at home for the duration of your studies.

Other opportunities to visit

We’d really recommend coming along to one of our Open Days if you can, but if you aren’t able to attend then we also run regular campus tours on Tuesdays, and enhanced campus tours a couple of times a year. These tours give you the chance to have a general look around the campus with one of our student ambassadors.

Entry requirements

We welcome parents and guardians of students interested in studying at Roehampton to come along and visit us at our Open Days and Offer Holder Days. You will be able to see our lovely campus and take a look at the accommodation available. There is also an opportunity to meet the staff who will ensure that your young person gets the best out of university life both inside and outside of the classroom.

The University uses the UCAS Tariff to compare applicants with different qualifications.

This also allows us to consider applicants who have taken a range of different qualifications. Many programmes have specific entry requirements, which are listed on the individual course pages in this prospectus, as well as on our website so please have a look before you apply.

All offers are subject to the University’s general entrance requirements, which can be found on our website:

roehampton.ac.uk/applying/undergraduate-general-entrance-requirements

To give you an idea of how your grades translate into UCAS points, please see the tables opposite. You can also use the UCAS offer tariff calculator on their website. Please note there are many combinations, and if you are unsure, please feel free to contact us.

Support for students

Accommodation

Living away from home can be a daunting experience at first, but at Roehampton there is a lot of support in place. All students on campus are supported by a Flat Rep, who will live either in their flat or in a nearby one. They are there to ensure that if students have any questions or issues they can help them address them, as well as signpost them to other relevant services in the University.

Academic support

Our extensive support services are one of the reasons that our students thrive. Every student is assigned a dedicated Academic Guidance Tutor who is a member of academic staff in their department. Tutors offer personalised study advice, help choose modules and provide advice on future careers.

We also have a team of Academic Achievement Advisers, who run workshops and 1:1 sessions to help students manage their time, undertake research, write dissertations and learn effective note-taking.

roehampton.ac.uk/student-support/study-support

Chaplaincy

The University of Roehampton is a diverse community, made up of people from all faiths and none, living, studying and working together. To reflect this, we offer a multi-faith chaplaincy with chaplains. We celebrate our diversity and promote peaceful coexistence to all members of the community and beyond.

Each Chaplaincy Centre has a lounge area available to all members of the University, where students can relax away from their academic work and meet up with friends. They can also enjoy chaplaincy hospitality with a mug of Fairtrade tea or coffee, or attend a chaplaincy lunch or film night.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us – see our contact details at the back of this prospectus.

If you are applying from overseas and require specific advice about your qualifications, you can visit the country pages or contact our international team on:

This prospectus was accurate at the time of going to print, December 2018. It is important therefore that you check the University website for updates as some information is subject to change.

The University will endeavour to deliver the course in accordance with the description applied to it in the University’s prospectus and on the website for the academic year in which you begin the course. However, the University will be entitled to make reasonable changes to the course, including to content or syllabus of the course where developments in the subject area make that necessary, or to the location, method of delivery or methods of assessment on the course. In making any such changes, the University will aim to make the minimum changes necessary and will notify and consult with affected students in advance about any changes that are required. If the University changes your course and you are not satisfied with the changes, you will be offered the opportunity to withdraw from the programme and, if required, reasonable support to transfer to another provider.

Further, circumstances beyond the University’s reasonable control may prevent it from delivering the courses as described. Examples of such circumstances could include unanticipated departure of key members of University staff or where numbers recruited to the course are such that it is not possible to deliver an appropriate quality of education for students. In these circumstances, the University will take all reasonable steps to minimise any resultant disruption, by, for example, offering those students the chance to move to another course or institution or by delivering a modified version of the same course, but to the full extent that is possible under the general law, the University excludes liability for any loss and/or damage suffered by any applicant or student as a result of those circumstances.
