UNDERGROUND MAGIC WEEKLY LATE-NIGHT MAGIC SHOW LIGHTS UP WICKER PARK BASEMENT David Copperfield may have landed supermodel Claudia Schiffer for a few years, but that's nothing compared to the tricks local magician Dennis Watkins has up his sleeve. Stop by Wicker Park's Chopin Theatre to drink Polish beer in the basement during Watkins' Friday night "Magic Parlour" show, the city's only weekly late-night magic act. With sharp wit and charming rapport, David Blaine he most certainly ain't. No bad jokes or creepy mannerisms here, just a late-hour kid's birthday party gone horribly dark and comical. Watkins will be reading your mind and inviting you on stage to assist with various trickery (he has no assistant) in a cozy, laid-back setting with a '20s-style stage setup. In between slight-of-hand and card tricks, Watkins' well-placed one-liners keep the crowd as relaxed as the beer and wine that flow through the show. Up-close levitation and rope tricks start things out before Watkins moves to his show-stopping finale, where he tells which card you picked from a deck… while inside a giant 7-foot balloon.
