Introduction • Bronchial asthma is a common global health

problem.• Individuals of all ages are affected.• Chronic airway disorder.• Severe and occasionally fatal. • Prevalence of asthama is increasing worldwide,

especially in children.• Mortality data from developed countries show that

the rates vary from 0.1 to 0.8 per 1 Lac persons aged 5 to 34.

Tamaka Swasa

• Classified into two varieties:

Tamaka swasa vatapradhan

Tamaka swasa shlesma pradhana

• The indicators of the former are highly painful breathing with

high frequency of noisy sounds, little expectoration, difficulty

in expectoration, and insomnia.

• The latter is characterized by high vibrating noise in throat

while breathing, coryza, easy and copious expectoration, and

painful fast breathing.

Inhalers / Nebulizers • Inhaled drugs are localized to the target organ,

which generally allows for a lower dose than is

necessary with systemic delivery.

• Fewer and less severe adverse effects.

• The 3 types of aerosol device (MDI,DPI, and

nebulizer) can be clinically equivalent.

• Inhalation : Drug may be administered as solid particle (in nebulizers) either in a solution form or in a vapour form.

Essential oils

• Known as life blood of plant

• Very potent

• Soluble in ether , alcohol and water

• Inhalation of steam containing essential oil is

often a very effective way to treat respiratory

complaints .

• Vasa: Active Constituents Alkaloids, Flavonoids,

• Tylophora asthmatica : Leaves, Root Powder, Root bark

• Ginger root is widely known for its positive impact on

inflammation.

• The volatile oils of ginger root modulate the release of

immune compounds

• Essential oils of Cypress sempervirens and Origanum

majorana were highly valued as medicines by ancient

civilizations.

• Have antispasmodic activity in the RS and promote clear

airways within the lungs.

• Essential oil (Melaleuca viridiflora) comes from the leaves

of a tree used in the respiratory system.

• Resolves phlegm.

• Promotes healthy inflammatory pathways with in the lungs.

Concept of DPI• Powder drug formulations are either in a pure form, mixed

with an inactive excipient such as lactose.

• Finely milled powder particles (< 5 µm) do not flow freely

• Because of cohesive force and static charge.

• To produce suitably small drug particles, the drug must then

be disaggregated by shear forces during an adequate

inhalation.

• It is for this reason that DPIs require a relatively high

inspiratory flow for drug delivery to the airways.

Significance Of Nasal Route

• Quick absorption and fast action

• Poisonous drugs can not be administered by this route ,as it may reach brain.

Further research• Establish Efficacy Of Various Ayurvedic Preparations

used in asthma by good quality randomized controlled

trials.

• Determine the Active Principles in various Ayurvedic

medications.

• Evaluate the impact of Ayurvedic medications on the

natural history.

• Evaluate the role of immuno modulator medications

available in Ayurveda.

Conclusions

• The review of literature highlights need for more research

in utility of Ayurvedic preparations (Inhalers) in bronchial

asthma.

• Medications and the management are not well

standardized.

• As a large number of experimental studies have

documented .

• Potential for discovering new compounds useful in the

management of asthma.
