What is Low Vision?
• You need more than glasses or contact lenses
• Central or side vision or both may be reduced
• Vision cannot be corrected by surgery or medication
• BUT with the help of support, training and vision aids– you can still be independent!!
Causes of low vision
• Can be present from birth• Can be acquired through disease or
accident• Can be inherited
Some common causes macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment,
glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosis, albinism
Different degrees of vision loss
Diagnosis
• Opthalmologist (Surgery, medication)• Low vision optometrist (Specialised
testing)• Low vision specialist (O & M, vision
training etc.)
Low vision care is about rehabilitation not cure

Path to Independence
• Understanding and dealing with feelings of vision loss
• Home care and cooking• Travelling safely in the community• Managing medication• Personal grooming• Using computers and meeting career
objectives and much more
