This hardback book is easy to read and is dividedinto several chapters looking at both normal and al-tered pathophysiology alongside disease processes. The book gives clear information and is set out insections containing helpful tables, boxes, figuresand some excellent detailed colour images. Pre-sented in an easy to follow format the layout is en-hanced by the chapter outline box at the start ofeach chapter.

Throughout all areas quick check activities are in-cluded to enable the reader to test their understand-ing of various concepts. It is a little disappointingthough to find there are no answers to these ques-tions so readerswould have to refer back to themaintext when checking their understanding. Howeverthe ‘do you understand?’ sections at the end of eachchapter are a series of condensedbullet pointswhichare liable to be very helpful to the reader, especially

when quick reference rather than detailed explana-tion is sought. There are many very detailed andhelpful illustrations. The way that these are usedto support the text is one of the particular strengthsof the book. The book is well writtenwith each chap-ter a complete unit of information. This approachgives the reader relevant information in short sec-tions which are enhanced by the differing activitiesavailable throughout.

At first 1216 pages may seem a little daunting tothe potential reader but it is quite an easy read gi-ven the potentially difficult subject matter. Thedifferent activities and illustrations within eachchapter bring to life the literature in a user friendlyfashion. The book is accompanied by a companionCD with questions and answers to enhance learn-ing. For the detail and potential use that this bookwould provide £25 seems a reasonable amount andis not out of the reach of individual purchasers.

the text but always in the context of trauma withthe management of life threatening injuries as apriority. Some interesting chapters around painassessment and management along with the psy-chological impact of trauma would also be relevantto those caring for orthopaedic patients with trau-matic injuries. A section on spinal cord injuries andan informative chapter on musculoskeletal injuriesalso highlight orthopaedic care issues in an instruc-tive way.

Better texts are available for those looking for adedicated orthopaedic focus but this book is worthviewing in a library as an adjunct to information re-lated to orthopaedic trauma.
