Description of Inspiration:

The inspiration behind the design of this exhibition revolves around water and ships. The ocean water inspired the finishes on the walls, the ceiling panels, and the graphics. Further, the jaggedness of the waves and crags in the ocean inspired the layout of the space, the angular undulating ceiling panels, and the shape of the graphic panels. The hard, exposed exterior of the Navy ships inspired the design of the display cases and the materials used within the exhibition.

Ceiling Plan:

The movement of water inspired the design of the ceiling panels. The large opening in the middle surrounded by clusters of ceiling panels above represents the glimmer of light that you see when submerged in the ocean water. Throughout the exhibition, the panels change in color and height, which will make the visitors feel as if they are begin immersed deeper into the ocean water. The ceiling panels also serve as a wayfinding device and reflect the intended path of travel.

Display Case Design:

Lauren Stern Studio II Underwater Archaeology Exhibition at the U.S. Navy Museum Corcoran College of Art + Design May 11, 2011 Page 17 of 21

The inspiration behind the display cases is the exposed hardware seen on the sides of Navy ships. The cases were designed this way so the artifacts would stand out from the rest of the space.
