Although 2011 marked the beginning for the Upsilon Mu chapter, it certainly was a year full of accomplishments. The ladies of Upsilon Mu collectively participated in numerous service projects, including Habitat for Humanity and Service Saturdays with the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, as well as conducted their own service efforts individually. Upsilon Mu made connections with Davidson Day School, Ben & Jerry’s, KadiFit in Cornelius, the Center for Civic Engagement, and Career Services. As members of a sisterhood called to serve, we want to remember the sacrifice of Delta women who have come before us, the hundreds of thousands that stand in sisterhood with us today, and the chosen few who may join our ranks in the future. We have so much to be thankful for!

We pray for a blessed and prosperous year on the eve of our centennial celebration. May we remain forever dedicated to the ideals of this sorority.

Many dynamic women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. have successfully infiltrated various scientific disciplines. Marissa Ghant of Bolingbrook, Illinois is one of those women. This Psychology major offers her critical eye to Upsilon Mu and to the world around her.

Ms. Ghant, a Presidential Scholar, explores her passion for science in a variety of capacities. She serves as a Senior Leader of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Strategies for Success program that provides opportunities and skills for ethnic minorities in the sciences, and a Teacher Liaison and volunteer for Davidson Students Volunteer for Science, a program that instills a love for science in middle school youth. When she isn’t volunteering in her community, Ms. Ghant enjoys recreations such as Dance Ensemble, Intramural basketball, and step as the Vice President of Davidson’s Shades of Brown step team.

Ms. Ghant’s studies have taken her to Costa Rica where she put her Spanish fluency to the test. Additionally, she traveled Mwandi, Zambia as a participant in the Davidson in Mwandi program during the summer of 2011. While in Mwandi she studied health care worker shortage and provided solutions to the problem in her project “Improving Retention Rates of Health Care Workers in Zambia. The culmination of her research will be reflected in a paper, final presentation, and poster symposium. Her work in Zambia is preceded by two summers’ worth of biomedical research on fibroids at Northwestern University. Each summer, her work resulted in presentations to the entire reproductive lab. Watch out! There’s no telling what Marissa will put her hands to next.

Why does she love Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.?

“We are all extremely committed and passionate about the mission of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. It is rare for a person to find a group of talented, intelligent, and focused group of young women that are truly dedicated to

making the world a better place. As a member of this wonderful organization, I am inspired each and every day by our willingness to do

whatever it takes to construct positive change in our community.”

*Fun Fact: Marissa performed brain surgery on a rat to induce Parkinson ‘s disease in her Behavioral Neuroscience class at Davidson!

Be Internationally Involved in Service!

A Message from Marissa:

Anyone who would like to contribute to Mwandi can do so in various ways. The Mwandi Christian Hospital is always in need of money for more supplies, staff housing, and vehicles. The preschool, basic school and high school are in desperate need of basic school materials. To support this cause, those who are interested can visit the Mwandi Christian Hospital website at mwandimission.org and click on the “How You Can Help” link to donate. If you would like to donate supplies directly, contact Dr. Verna Case at [email protected] to see if it’s possible to have those items travel with the Davidson in Mwandi participants this summer.

Additionally, the HHMI Strategies for Success program will be instituting soccer and basketball teams for the Mwandi High School and adult community. Any information and/or help in collecting uniforms, shoes, balls and other equipment would be greatly appreciated and can be direct to me at [email protected]. Thanks!

Tamara Munroe provides balance for Upsilon Mu with her calm demeanor and infectious laughter. This Bel Air, MD native makes her mark on Davidson as an English major, Presidential Scholar, and Bonner Scholar.

When Tamara isn’t brainstorming ways to save the world, she leads as the President of the Black Student Coalition, coordinates volunteers for Florence Crittenton, advises administrators on the Council on Campus and Religious Life,

serves as the Senior Intern for the Bonner Scholars Program, organizes peer mentors for Davidson’s S.T.R.I.D.E. Program, works as the Patterson Court Court Council Justice, and diligently works to improve the campus community as a member of the Social Space Planning Committee. Lastly, and most important, she serves as the Financial Secretary for the Upsilon Mu chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Ms. Munroe has accomplished much in her four years at Davidson. She coordinated the first event series in celebration of Black History Month, developed syllabi for two potential English courses to encourage a more inclusive and diverse curriculum, conceptualized and created an original blueprint for social justice through fellowship with Young People For, and helped charter the Upsilon Mu chapter.

Why does she love Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.?

“Besides the fact that all of my sisters in YM are so supportive, loving, and fun to be around, it is really great to be connected to such powerful,

brilliant, and determined young women. Honestly, each one of my sisters in YM has been an inspiration to me. We are not only a group of practical

idealists, but we are hustlers. With our combined gifts and strengths, I really don't see how we couldn't save the world.”
