ACO Universal Channel GullyInstallation details
Installation Notes:
(A): Excavate a 150mm-300mm bed and surround dependent on loadclass, blind where necessary. Form concrete* bed for base unit and set on mortar (or similar) levelling bed. Make pipeconnections (PVCu or Supersleeve) as appropriate.
(B): Concrete* surround base unit and pipes if required. Positiongully intermediate unit to level.
(C): Concrete* bed for channels allowing levelling mortar bed ifrequired. Extend concrete bed around unit (see fig 1). Installchannels (see separate channel installation recommendations)with taped external joints at junction of unit and end ofchannels.
(D): Complete concrete* surround to unit allowing for framelevelling bed. Cut out knockouts on gully frame and cut profileof the channel from inside of unit . Install gully and haunchconcrete* to the sides of channels as recommended in separatechannel installation recommendations.

ACO Universal Channel GullyInstallation details
1.0 GROUND CONDITIONS:
The long term performance of a gullyinstallation to sustain vertical and lateralwheel loads depends upon a) groundconditions b) stability of the adjacentpavement and c) a durable concrete bed andsurround. NOTE that the stability of thegully/concrete surround to resist lateral loadsfrom manoeuvring vehicles should bechecked. The dimensions shown on ACOchannel installation sketches are those of thelaboratory test block and customers shouldensure that these minimum dimensions aresuitable for the existing ground and serviceloading conditions. Engineering advice maybe necessary.
2.0 BLOCK PAVEMENTS:
THE GULLY MUST BE SUPPORTEDLATERALLY if carrying vehicular traffic andtherefore blocks laid directly against a gullymust be restrained from movement bybedding securely on the concrete haunch e.g.by using an Epoxy or a Polymer ModifiedMortar for bed and perpendicular joints (forexample RONAFIX Mortar Mix C fromRonacrete: Tel 01279 638700) or similar.Engineering advice may be required. Blocksor slabs bedded on sand remote from thechannel should be set at a higher level tocompensate for any possible settlement ofthe paving in service.
3.0 SURFACE CRACKS:
Alternate crack control and movement jointstransversely within an exposed concrete bedand haunch may reduce unsightly surfacecracking. As the design and layout of suchjoints is a function of the concrete mixdesign, the concrete curing regime and thecontractor’s programme (daywork joints forexample) then engineering/contractor advicemay be required.
4.0 JOINT SEALANT:
Where ACO channel joints/fittings andchannel/concrete/pavement interfaces are tobe sealed (where used in foul water orchemical applications for instance) contact asealant specialist for guidance on theappropriate compound. It should be notedthat the preparation of ACO resin concretechannels to receive a sealant does not varyfrom that required of cement concrete.Guidance on the necessary surfacepreparation and/or priming should be soughtfrom the sealant manufacturer.
5.0 SURFACE PROTECTION:
With asphalt pavements avoid contact betweencompaction equipment and gully/grating. Thismay be achieved by ensuring that the finishedsurface level lies above the grating level (by atleast 3mm). Stones should be removed fromgrating prior to laying/rolling wearing course.Covering or protecting the grating, beforeconcreting the haunch or laying asphalt, removes the time, and cost, of cleaning thechannel and grating of cement/asphalt materialand embedded stones.
6.0 MOVEMENT JOINTS:
The gully must be isolated from lateral loadsresulting from thermal movement of concreteslabs. A joint may be positioned up to1.0/1.5m from the gully (UK externalinstallations). In internal applications wheretemperatures are controlled, possibly within alow range of extremes, joints may not berequired. Engineering advice may benecessary. If joints are dowelled then it isimperative that the dowels are alignedcorrectly in relation to the joint in bothvertical and horizontal planes; that they areeffectively debonded (with a proprietarysleeve and capping). Cutting of the jointmaterial (to allow dowel fixing for example)must be made good to prevent the passage ofconcrete through a joint.
7.0 TEMPORARY INSTALLATION:
A gully installation is not complete until thefinal surfacing is laid. In any temporarycondition, i.e. with the gully walls projectingabove an asphalt base course or concretesub-base, site traffic SHOULD NOT CROSSTHE GULLY. LOOSE BOARDS; STONE FILLOR COVER PLATES WILL NOT PROTECTTHE GULLY WALLS OR GRATING. Atemporary crossing should be formed byraising the asphalt base course locally, to 3 -5mm above grating level, either side of agully for a distance of 750 to 1000mm, toform ramps. Concrete ramps should beformed in other pavements. NOTE that thegully LOAD CLASS should be adequate tocarry the site traffic.
8.0 FURTHER ADVICE:
Refer to ACO Technical and InstallationManuals for further information and adviceconcerning a) Handling b) Health andSafety c) Maintenance and d) Detailedinstallation guidance etc., etc. Advice, onany aspect of ACO channel systems, mayalso be obtained from ACO WaterManagement Design Services Team.
9.0 BEST PRACTICE ANDWORKMANSHIP:
ACO can give guidance with respect to themost suitable methods of installation for eachof the products in the ACO range. ACOUniversal Gully should be installed usingacceptable levels of workmanship andaccording to the National Code of Practice(UK: BS8000: Part 14: 1989) in keepingwith BS EN 1433: 2002 (Drainage channelsfor vehicular and pedestrian areas). Detailedinstallation statements and methodologieswill vary for all sites as each will havedifferent aspects deserving particularconsideration, consequently the relevantapprovals should be sought form theconsulting engineer and/or the installer.
