T he dream to create an Italian American service organization to engage in charitable work, support higher education, and perform patriotic deeds sparked the formation of UNICO. The name, in Italian, means unique. Placing service to the community before and above their own fraternity made the group one of a kind. UNICO was formed in 1922 and has become the largest Italian American service organization in the United States. The group was formed in the wake of World War I when the Italian immigrant loyalty to America was in question. Even though Italian Americans accounted for twelve percent of the war’s casualties the strong anti-Italian prejudice prevailed. lead organizer Dr. Anthony Vastola wanted to remove any doubt that the Italian Americans loved their adopted country first and foremost. There are nineteen states with local districts and chapters. The Elizabeth New Jersey Chapter has been active fifty two years. Its track record for service is extensive. UNICO raises funds and redistributes them to local Elizabeth community service organizations. Members volunteer for these organizations and then pick a community service project to complete. Beneficiaries of UNICO support include: St. Joseph’s Social Service Center, Center of Hope Hospice, St. Anthony’s Church, Our Lady Of Guadalupe Academy, Arc of Union County, Kohler Development Center, and Community FoodBank of NJ. The local Chapters also support the national efforts such as battling Cooley Anemia. Academic scholarships are also awarded on an annual basis. The ties that bind the group is an Italian ancestry. Preserving Italian traditions and culture is prevalent in everything the club does. Moreso, it tries to promote that culture by recognizing the contributions that Italians have made to this country. The Elizabeth Chapter holds an Annual Dinner Dance that honors a Citizen of the Year for their accomplishments and contributions. This year is the first time that the club has selected more than one recipient, in fact, it has chosen three brothers to honor. Mike, Tom and Philip Colicchio have achieved a level of success in their respective fields. Each have their own brand of success but share the same sense of satisfaction. They also share a connection with Elizabeth rooted over three generations. They are, in their ways, ambassadors fo the city. UNICO chose them as 2015 Citizens of the Year because they exemplify the positive characteristics of Italian American culture. They embrace the Italian traditions that shaped the community in the Peterstown Section of Elizabeth - God, family and community. The Colicchio brothers were born and raised on South Broad Street in Elizabeth, New Jersey. They are the sons of Thomas Patrick and Beverly Ann Corvelli Colicchio, and are the grandsons of Mike and Esther Corvelli and Felix and Olga Colicchio. The influence and inspiration provided by their parents, grandparents, wives, children, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, colleagues and each other are immeasurable. Dad forged their competitive edge and outgoing side and Mom instilled in them the value of literacy, compassion, humor, cooking, and hard work. She’s a confidante and friend to all three of her sons! Mike, born in 1961, spent considerable time of his thirty year career living and working throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia directing and managing financial programs. Tom, born in 1962, has been a trend setting, world-renowned chef, restauranteur, food activist and television personality. He is Executive Chef and CEO of the Crafted Hospitality Group with eight restaurants and a sandwich chain. Tom has been awarded five James Beard Awards and has won two Emmy Awards. As a founding director of Food Policy Action Group he frequently speaks on Capitol Hill for consumer rights. In 2012 he and his filmmaker wife, Lori Silverbush, produced and directed the hunger documentary “A Place At The Table”. Philip, born in 1966, played basketball for Elizabeth High School and Kean University. He has been coaching the Linden High School Varsity Basketball squad for 18 seasons and is approaching his 400th win. His teams have won seven State Championships. I wish all the best to my friends in

UNICO. They do a great job of

preserving the traditions that came so

naturally to us growing up. It does ta

ke

an effort today to pull everyone togeth

er. Families are so

spread out that a club like UNICO is n

eeded to create

common ground. It used to be easy to get a

group

together when needed by just walkin

neighborhood.

Helping each other and those in need

was a way of

life growing up. It’s what our grandp

arents and parents

did. It was a struggle back then and

helping each other

was the way everyone prospered. Th

e past generations

were so successful that the present g

eneration may be

too comfortable to recognize those in need.

One of the traditions that UNICO kee

ps alive is that of

community service. Their motto is “Service be

How many parents teach that to their kids to

helping others is not part of your fam

UNICO is a good way to start getting

Dear Joe,Your August 2015 edition of Around About Peterstown,

Issue 101, reached me through the courtesy of one of my firstcousins, Irene Rotola (of Cranford by the way) present at theFoti Family Reunion. I really enjoyed picking out cousins Irecognized in the center spread photo. It was delightful to seemany familiar faces and those totally new!

The article on St. Anthony of Padua Church reflected thevibrancy of the present congregation and its pastor. Everyarticle was wonderful to read! I was a young child when weleft Peterstown and yet some memories are still intact!Though my memories of Peterstown are tenuous at best, some are well-remembered and treasured.

Our grandparents, Filippo and Domenica Foti, their foursons (mentioned in the article) and their families each hadtheir own apartment unit in what was then a brick three-storybuilding on the corner of Palmer Street and Third Avenue.

Another wonderful surprise: The article on Page 5 yieldeda tribute to Arthur and Anthony Papetti. I send the brothersmy congratulations upon the recognition and magnitude oftheir efforts.

Many thanks,Romilda FotiBloomington, MN

Dear Sir,I was forwarded a copy of the February 2015 issue of the

Peterstown Newspaper in which you wrote about the PetrucelliFuneral Home and my great uncle, Peter Scutro. It waswonderful to see photographs of him and learn some things Idid not know about my extended family. Bob Belmont, alsomentioned in the article, was especially kind in arranging theinterment of my mother’s ashes several years ago.

Sincerely,Roy ScutroRockledge, Florida

Dear Tina,My family and I read the August 2015 issue of the

Peterstown newspaper and was so surprised to see a photo ofour loving mother on page 6.

My mom and dad were residents of Peterstown basically alltheir lives. We lived in Peterstown, went to St. Anthony’sChurch and School, had the best pizza, oven baked bread andItalian ice. We enjoyed all our favorite little stores and havemany fond memories.

My family had a building construction company and theRay Masters Orchesta. The Orchestra played for many SaintAnthony’s functions and mama sang. She also volunteered atthe church and school helping the priest and nuns.

My beautiful dear mom passed away and my dad and thefamily have moved from Peterstown. I’m getting a copy of thenewspaper for my dad and myfive siblings. It will be nice tohave a copy with my mom’sphoto. Thank you for handlingthis matter. We greatlyappreciate it and we’re so happywe came upon your wonderfulnewspaper. What heartfeltmemories it has brought back tous.

Sincerely, Denise M. KoningMartisville, NJ

Hi Joe,Thank you so very much for the fantastic story about my

grandfather, Dr. Guidi in the December 2015 issue of thePeterstown Newspaper. All the members of my family arevery pleased that I sent them copies. And also a big Thanksfor the follow-up about the folks that were able to find theirbirth records and used it as a chance to renew old friendships.

I saw the obituary for John Riggi in the August 2015 issueand remember that My Grandpa treated John Riggi for someillness when he was a young man. I was proud to beacquainted with John and his father, Manny, in the past.

Although I never lived in Peterstown I had many friendsthere and attended St. Anthony’s Church as an adult.

Last but not least, THANK YOU for the great job ofhelping to keep Peterstown alive.

Some people say “You should have no regrets in life.”That’s hogwash. There are plenty of things that I regretand would do differently if I could. The deep feeling ofremorse and regret is what makes us grow into a personand develops our conscience. The more profound thefeeling, the more embedded the lesson.

No one is perfect and we all make mistakes. Some arelapses in judgement while others are deliberate badbehavior. There are plenty of both in my life and I wasable to make amends in almost every case. Dismissing theinstances of just plain stupidity, I have just a handful ofregrets. Nothing serious in the last thirty years until now.

I regret not being present when I had to put my dogdown. I left my wife Tina alone to handle the process. Itwas a devastating thing for her to have to do and worsefor her to have to do it alone.

Neuman had been part of our family for 15 years. Hishealth was slipping and Tina and I would have deep end-of-life discussions, but there was no definitive correcttime to make the decision. We tried to do what was mosthumane. A wonderful veterinarian helped us to weighboth sides of the decision, or at least accept the decision.Of course, Tina was racked with emotion over the wholeordeal.

The doctor had a unique practice in that he came toour home and did the procedures on site. This gives theopportunity for the family to comfort their pet to theend. The appointment was made for noon on Saturday,September 12, 2105. That morning Tina took Neumanon one last walk. Tina made him hamburgers fromSacco’s Butcher, then made him comfortable in his bed.

That morning I went to a funeral at 10:30 with theintentions of getting back by noon. I’m thinking everyfive minutes that I had enough time to make it back

when you can write.

home. I sat in the church, cell phone off, lost in thethought of the thirty-one-year-old family friend in thecoffin. I’m thinking about losing my dog and just plainnumb. When I exit the church I see that it was 12:06. Myphone shows a dozen missed calls from Tina. I’m crushedbut it doesn't compare to even a small fraction of how sadTina was. I could not imagine her holding Neuman whilehe was being put to sleep and our daughter Angelahelping to carry him to the car.

Part of the experience is that you get to be close toyour pet to the end. I missed being with Neuman on hislast day, but more importantly I missed being there forTina. It is one of my biggest regrets for it was preventable.

I’ve got to check whatever guided my decision thatmorning. It’s a flaw I experienced in the past but never tosuch a degree. Some times I think I’m emotionally cold, but this seemed just plain insensitive.

I regret not being there for Tina and missing theopportunity to give a proper farewell to Neuman.

As a proud resident of Peterstown, it has been my pleasure to have serviced the community’s car and truck buying needs. Together with Richard Lucas of Richard Lucas Chevrolet & Subaru, we have been satisfying area residents for many years. With the excellent reputation of the Lucas family, we promise to keep you a very satisfied customer for many years to come.

THE CENTENNIAL WOMANSubmitted by Dominick Zarrillo, great nephew of 100 year old Millie Iscaro

Carmela Mildred (Millie) Iscaro was born onSeptember 27, 1915 in Elizabeth New Jersey and onehundred years later, she would be turning a century oldin the same city as she was born in, but lets start herstory from the beginning.

One hundred years ago, World War I was raging on inEurope while Millie Iscaro was just born to parents, JuliaMaranico and Enrico Iscaro. As Charlie Chaplin wasrising to fame, she was learning how to walk. Millie hadthree siblings, Joseph, Angelina, and Louis Iscaro nowdeceased. Millie attended elementary School #3 inElizabeth and St. Benedictine Academy High School. She turned sixteen the same year the Empire StateBuilding was completed in 1931, and graduated highschool in 1933, the same year trouble was rising inGermany.

Millie’s’s mother wanted her to be a nurse but Millieknew that nursing school or college was not her desire. She was determined to fulfill her dream of becoming afashion designer and with some convincing she got hermother’s blessing and went to design school in Newark,New Jersey. Upon graduating she become adesigner/seamstress working in the New York garmentdistrict.

In the late 1930s, she meet the love of her life andfuture husband, Samuel Covino of Elizabeth, whose lastname she would carry for the rest of her life. They hadone son, John, who, with wife Pat gave her a grandson

also named John. Her brother-in-law Nick Covino, alsoof Elizabeth would also give her many nieces andnephews.

Sadly, in 1966, Sam Covino pass away leaving Millieheartbroken. She never remarried, for her heart willalways belong to Sam.

Millie Covino has seen a lot in her life. She has livedthrough two world wars, seventeen presidents, seencountries rise and fall, and countless other events andpeople in her one hundred years on this planet. Notmany people today can say that they roared along withthe crowds in the Roaring Twenties, but Millie can. Shenot only lived through it all, she thrived through theyears as the proud Italian woman. Presently, at onehundred years of age, she is still living in the smallapartment where she was born in Elizabeth. She stilllives on her own, without assistance, a resilient goldenwoman. Her niece Rose and her son John help her withsome chores but mostly to be in her company.

Millie loves watching old movies on TCM moviechannel and still love ot sew. He apartment is a like amuseum filled with memories and items she saved fordecades, garments that she made, love letters from herhusband predating the German invasion of Poland.

Carmela Mildred (Millie) Iscaro Covino has seen itall and there is much more for her to see as thisremarkable woman has always said, “The first hundredyears are the hardest.”

Not for Nothing But...Millie Iscaro says

“The first hundred

years are the hardest.”(above, l-r) Sam and Mildred Iscoro.

RENNA MEDIA LAUNCHES SEVEN NEW NEWSPAPERS14

October 15

Beginning in October 2015 Renna Media’s family ofmonthly newspapers will grow from 12 to 18publications. The towns of Westfield, Scotch Plains,Fanwood, Summit, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, and Mountainside will join Renna Media’s existingnewspapers and will deliver important information fromthe departments in town hall, along with news from theschools and libraries. Community service organizationsare encouraged to promote their events and celebratetheir accomplishments free of charge. The goal of all ourcommunity newspapers is to have a positive influence onthe economic development and overall well-being of thetowns they serve.

Renna Media is a Cranford based business owned andoperated by husband and wife team Joe and Tina Renna.Renna Media’s family of 18 community newspapers arepublished in and around Union and Somerset countieswith a total circulation of 100,000 newspapers mailedmonthly. The publications are “hyper-local” in nature inthat they contain information focused on each individualtown and are direct mailed within those towns.

The concept of being hyper-local is to give local

businesses a venue to promote events and services.Reaching local customers gives you the highest return foryour advertising dollars. The newspapers are designed(black ink on newsprint) to keep the cost of anadvertisement to as low as $60. Inserts are also available.Regional businesses can take advantage of one low ratefor advertising in multi publications.

Joe and Tina Renna, owners of Renna Media, LLC,have been publishing community newspapers since 1998with the launch of Around About Peterstown, a regionalnewspaper about the Italian-American neighborhood in

Elizabeth, NJ.Renna Media sought to fill what they saw as a void in

other communities and created newspapers that wouldgive a venue to town administrations and non-profitorganizations to promote upcoming events as well as toshowcase the accomplishments of local residents andbusinesses.

For more information about Renna Mediapublications, please call 908-418-5586 or email:[email protected]. Visit us on-line atRennaMedia.com.
