*Arrows on templates indicate pile or print direction on fabric.

Note: All seam allowances are 1/4" unless otherwise specified. Templates include seam allowances where neces-sary. Press all seam allowances open.

Construct the Unicorn Head Place one inner and one outer ear

right sides together, matching all edges. Place a batting scrap beneath the layered ears, and sew around the outer edges, leaving the bottom edge open. Trim excess batting close to the seamline. Trim the ear tip, and clip curves.

Turn the ear right side out. Fold each side of the ear toward the center, overlapping the sides if necessary, so that the unsewn bottom edge of the ear measures 1". Baste the bottom edge to hold the sides in place. Repeat to make a second ear, folding the sides in opposite order, to make a mirror image of the first ear.

Matching raw edges, fold the Side Face darts right sides together and sew the darts using a 1/4" seam. With right sides together, pin and sew the upper edge of the Side Face to one

UNICORNS ARE REAL WALL MOUNTlong edge of the Center Face. Clip the curves. Repeat to join the remaining Side Face to the opposite side of the Center Face.

With right sides together, align the Chin with the lower edge of one Side Face. With the Chin against the feed dogs, sew the Chin to the Face, stop-ping with the needle down at the first A corner. Lift the presser foot, clip the Side Face seam allowance, and reposi-tion the fabric as necessary before continuing on. Match the outer notches with the Center/Side Face seams, and match the center notches together. Place the needle down at the second A corner, clip the Side Face seam allowance, then finish the seam. Clip the curves.

With right sides together, sew the lower edge of the horn to the upper edge of the Center Face, stopping with the needle down at each corner to lift the presser foot, clip the seam allow-ance, and re-position the fabric as needed.

With both the Center Face and Front Mane right side up, baste one Front Mane to the upper edge of the Center Face. With the outer ear facing up, position an ear along the basted edge. Make sure that the top fold of the ear faces away from the Center Face, and baste the base of the ear in place.

Repeat to join the remaining Front Mane and Ear to the Face.

With right sides together, align and sew the long notched edge of one Neck to one side of the head. Sew the un-notched edge of the neck to the inner curve of one Mount, making sure the wider straight edge of the Mount is at the bottom of the Neck. Repeat to join the remaining Neck and Mount to the opposite side of the head. Clip the curves.

Layer the four Mane pieces together, and baste along the curved edge. Posi-tion the Mane right side up on the right side of the Neck. Baste in place.

Following the manufacturer's instructions, attach the eyes to the head, making the shank hole as small as possible. To add extra support, place a 1" square of batting over the shank before securing the washer in place.

With right sides together, sew the upper edge of the unicorn head to-gether, starting at the tip of the Horn, and ending at the outer edge of the Mount, and securing the Mane within the seam. Sew the lower edge of the unicorn head, from chin to mount outer edge.

Assemble the Mount Fold the lining circle in half and press

the crease. Cut the circle in two pieces along the crease. With the two half-circles right sides together and all edges aligned, sew along the straight edge, changing the stitch length to the longest setting at the center 2" to 21/2" of the seam. Press the seam open.

Turn the head right side out and stuff firmly with polyfil stuffing until the head is nearly filled. Place the head on top of the lining, so that the wrong sides are together and the long stitches in the lining seam are behind the Neck.Place the head in the embroidery hoop, aligning the top seam of the head with the opening in the outer ring. Pull the fabric taut and tighten the hoop.

Use perle cotton or embroidery floss to hand sew around the base of the neck, attaching the lining to the mount. Clip the long stitches in the lining seam. Finish stuffing the head, then hand sew the opening closed.

Finishing Using perle cotton or 6 strands of

embroidery floss, secure the floss at the center back of the horn, then wrap the floss around the horn in a spiral, securing each wrap with a small stitch at the back of the horn. Bury the floss

To add shaping stitches between the eyes, use a soft sculpture needle and strong thread. Bring the needle out at the inside on one eye, and secure the thread with a few small stitches. Push the needle through the head to the other eye. Pull the needle through the head to the first eye, then back to the second eye again. Gently pull on the thread to draw the eyes slightly together. Secure the thread with several small, close stitches, then pull the thread into the head before cutting the excess thread. Add shaping to the lower face by sewing the corners of the mouth in the same way.

Using a water-erasable pen, draw eyelashes and nostrils on the unicorn face. Using perle cotton or 6 strands of embroidery floss to satin stitch the nostrils and 2 strands to embroider the eyelashes.

Optional: Layer the mane, trimming upper manes 3/8" shorter than the one directly below.

Trim the excess mount and lining fabric 1/2" beyond the edge of the hoop. Apply glue to the inside edge of the embroidery hoop, then fold the trimmed edge inside the hoop edge to secure.
