INTRODUCTION

RATIONALE:

At Global Jaya School, we believe that the school uniform helps create a

sense of belonging to the school community and helps create an environment in which division and the formation of cliques is less likely to occur. Students have a responsibility to demonstrate their commitment to the school community by following the uniform and dress code. The uniform seeks to present a smart, disciplined image inviting respect of others within the school and wider community.

The uniform policy provides an excellent opportunity to educate and prepare students to fulfil their role as members of a civil society. Through the policy, students come to understand the meaning and application of personal responsibility, integrity and the merits of conforming to certain expected behaviours for the greater good of the community.

Furthermore, at Global Jaya School, we believe the uniform policy provides an opportunity for students to understand and engage in the processes associated with policy change. The uniform policy represents a relatively benign context for understanding the procedures for proposing and implementing change, including aspects of leadership, legal precedence, social architecture, collective will and the responsibility of making choices that will affect a wider community. Hand in hand with the uniform policy is a procedure for amending the current policy through authoring a draft proposal, seeking sponsorship, presenting to the student council and principals for review and final approval by the Head of School. The goal is to educate our students to act responsibility within a socially acceptable framework to create positive change.

AIMS:

To have a clearly identifiable Global Jaya School uniform.

To have a uniform that reflects current school values and practical needs.

To have a uniform that develops pride in and a sense of belonging and commitment to the school community.

To have a practical, good quality uniform that is economical.

To have a uniform and dress code that is straightforward and easy to comply with.

To educate and prepare the students to fulfil their role as members of a civil society.

To provide an opportunity for students to understand and engage in the processes associated with policy change.

While in uniform, either in accordance with the policy or in violation of it, students are representing the school and the high standards to which we all aspire. Students should respect their friends, the school, teachers and parents and most of all themselves by respecting the uniform and its function by wearing it properly.

IMPLEMENTATION:

The school uniform must be worn at all times during school days. Exceptions may include special occasions such as some excursions, assemblies, uniform free day, etc.

The uniform is to be worn as a whole, according to its design and should not be

supplemented by non-uniform items. Exceptions may include special interest items (pins, bracelets or ribbons, etc.) for special occasions, items promoting student council candidates during school elections, etc.

Students must always be clean, neat and properly dressed. Exceptions to

proper dress may include clothes that accommodate medical conditions such as a cast or an injury to the foot which prevents the student from wearing proper footwear.

Girls are to wear proper under-attire that is not obvious under their garments and therefore should be white or cream in colour. Other colours are to be avoided.

It is recommended, though not required, that girls who wear a skirt also wear spandex/bicycle shorts underneath.

The bottom hem of both the skirt and the skort must reach the top of the knee when the student is standing. At the discretion of the student, the bottom hem may be longer, but should not extend below the ankle.

Shorts must be worn by Primary boys. The shorts must not be longer than the top of the knee when the student is standing.

Pants must be worn by Secondary boys. Secondary girls may choose to wear pants at their own discretion. The bottom hem of the pant leg should touch the shoe at its minimum, but not extend below the edge of the sole at its maximum. It is recommended that boys in Year 7 to Year 10 hem the bottom of their pants in such a way as to allow the hem to be lowered as they grow taller. Pants that are damaged or stained must be repaired or replaced.

If a student wears an undershirt beneath their uniform, it is to be all white with no print or picture. It may be crew cut, v-neck, short sleeved or sleeveless (singlet).

Shirts are designed to be worn outside of the pants/skirt, but they may be worn tucked in at the discretion of the wearer.

Official school sweaters/cardigans are also available for colder temperatures. Only these sweaters/cardigans are to be worn at school. Exceptions may include special occasions when clothing is issued by Sports, Arts, etc., but these are not to be worn on a regular basis.

Students must change into their school physical education

(PE) uniform before their PE lesson. This uniform shall only be worn during PE lessons. Students should change back into their normal school uniform after their PE lesson unless PE is the last lesson of the day.

Students who engage in vigorous sports at break times or after school activities such as basketball and soccer must wear their white T-shirt with no print, not their school uniform shirt. The school shirt must be worn again before leaving the field or court unless the student is moving directly to the toilet or changing room in the gym to clean up. Students should not enter the classrooms unless they are wearing the complete uniform properly.

School and PE uniforms (or the material) may be purchased from the shop in the administration section of the school, packaged together with clear illustrations and uniform guidelines.

Due to safety concerns, it is important that students wear shoes designed to cover the entire foot. Open-toed shoes and sandals are prohibited.

Students are not to tread on the back of the shoes or wear them in any way similar to a sandal.

All shoes must be black with no other colour on them. If branded shoes are purchased, the logo must be removed, coloured black or covered with black tape. Exceptions to the color rule may include shoes required for PE or participation in an authorised team or club. Sports shoes for use in the

gymnasium should have non-marking soles.

If shoes are decorated with an accessory such as a buckle or bow, it must be appropriate in size and colour and not excessive in its appearance.

All-black sport shoes, walking shoes and dress shoes with no heel or short heels are considered the most appropriate for movement around the school campus. High heeled shoes are not allowed. Exceptions may be for special performances or formal functions, such as graduation.

Hair is to be neatly maintained, be cut conservatively and be of its natural colour.

Hair should be cut or pinned back so that it does not cover the student’s face, including their eyebrows. Boys should not have hair that is longer than the bottom of their shirt collar when they are looking straight ahead.

Girls may wear hair accessories to keep their hair from their eyes such as bandos, hair clips and scrunchies, but they must be black or dark in color and simple in design.

Hats with the school logo and name may be purchased in the school shop. Other hats are prohibited. Exceptions may include special outdoor events like Sports Day and Swim Carnival. Primary students must wear the school hats during all break and lunch times.

Facial hair is discouraged, but not prohibited. Facial hair

should be well managed and neatly trimmed.

Sunglasses may be worn, but only outside. Exceptions may include special performances and assemblies or medical considerations.

No obvious make-up, nail polish, accessories or jewellery is to be worn. Exceptions may include modest wristwatches, simple earrings (for girls) and bracelets/pendants for medical purposes. Subtle, clear or pastel colored nail polish may be acceptable.

Earrings must be removed for sport and physical education lessons.

Nose rings or studs, pendant earrings, bangle earrings and earrings worn by boys are prohibited when wearing the school uniform. Exceptions may include special performances and assemblies, World Culture Day, etc.

It is the school’s policy that items denoting religious affiliation or preference may be worn if concealed, but should not be visible when the uniform is properly worn. This includes pendants, pins, bracelets, necklaces, etc.

The manner in which the uniform is expected to be worn as stated in this policy also applies to events that take place outside of the school and that require students to wear the school uniform. A simple rule to follow is: If you are in uniform, regardless of where you are, you must wear the uniform properly. Wearing the uniform improperly or wearing only part of the uniform violates the policy. We recognize the rights of students to express themselves in creative and appropriate ways outside of school and away from events, trips, excursions, etc. at which they serve as representatives of the school. When doing so, the school uniform should not be worn.

CONSEQUENCES FOR IMPROPER UNIFORM If a student arrives at school out of uniform, the following actions may be taken:

The student may be challenged by a teacher or Principal. If the offense can be immediately corrected, the student may be allowed to continue to class without further incident or reprimand. For example, a student enters the gate carrying their socks in their hand rather than wearing them on their feet, shoes are not properly worn, shirt is improperly buttoned, etc.

Students may be given a detention. Students negotiate a temporary amnesty so they can join classes until a driver can

return with the proper uniform or component of the uniform. This requires a note from the secretary signed and approved by a Principal.

Students may be sent to the relevant Principal, especially in cases of consistent repetition of the infraction.

The article of clothing may be confiscated and returned at the end of the day. Markers may be given to blacken the non-black areas of a shoe or black tape to

cover up a non-black logo or label. Parents may be contacted and students sent home to change. A letter may be sent home explaining that the student may not return to school until

the problem is corrected. A contract regarding the uniform is signed by the student and the Principal. Heads

of year, curriculum leaders, tutor group teachers, parents and/or guardian are made aware of the contract in accordance with the GJS communication policy.

Student may be sent to the school store to purchase socks or other items kept in stock by the school.

At certain times of the school year, a professional tailor may be present in school to assist students who have been remiss or reluctant to make the appropriate adjustments to skirt or pant length. Individual orders for new uniforms may also be placed at this time and will be considered proof of intent to correct an issue with the uniform, thus preventing the need for additional disciplinary action. All costs associated with the tailor are the responsibility of the student.

ADDENDUM Alumni Alumni are reminded that they will always be considered to be a member of the GJS family. However, alumni status does not include the freedom to dress inappropriately when they visit the school. Dress should be respectable, perhaps indicative of the alumni’s new and successful role in adult society. Global Jaya School reserves the right to deny entrance to visitors who are dressed inappropriately. If a determination is required regarding the respectability of the visitor’s attire, the decision rests with a Principal. Friday Batik Day As part of our ongoing commitment to honour and respect local culture and tradition, students are allowed to wear batik clothing on Fridays. The following guidelines are meant to promote the aesthetic quality of Indonesian batik and prevent misuse of the opportunity:

Primary:

Indonesian styles of batik and design are encouraged.

Girls may wear a batik dress with the shoulders covered or a batik shirt with sleeves, worn with a plain coloured skirt, shorts or long pants.

Boys may wear a batik shirt with school shorts.

Clothes that are not permitted: o sleeveless shirt o t-shirt or shirt without a collar o Jeans o Sarong and/or Kebaya

Secondary:

Indonesian styles of batik and design are encouraged.

Girls may wear a kebaya or other top if they wear a sarong, but plain white t-shirts are not allowed.

Boys may wear a sarong if trousers or shorts are worn underneath.

Due to safety concerns, sandals may not be worn.

Boys may wear non-uniform trousers as long as they are formal or semi-formal in quality and style. Slacks, trousers or khakis are fine, but jeans, shorts or ¾ length shorts are not allowed. Matching shoes may also be worn.

Process for Implementing Change in the Uniform Policy

Student writes a proposal and locates a sponsor. A sponsor should be a teacher or Principal. The sponsor may suggest revisions.

The proposal is presented to the Student Council for consideration by its Uniform Policy Committee. The committee may suggest revisions and either pass the proposal on to the Principals or ask the student(s) to revise the proposal and resubmit it at a later date.

If passed by the Uniform Policy Committee, the proposal is presented to the Principals. The Principals may either pass the proposal on to the Head of School or ask the Uniform Policy Committee to revise the proposal and resubmit it at a later date.

If passed by the Principals, the proposal is presented to the Head of School, who will review the case with the School Board. The Head of School will either approve the proposal, pass the proposal to the Yayasan, or ask that the policy be revised and resubmitted at a later date.

If approved by the Head of School and/or Yayasan, the proposal becomes official policy and is implemented within the proposed timeline.
