GSS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PLAN Great to see some rainfall in the Valley. It is a timely reminder to families that our staff and students are familiar with our emergency response procedures. Not just for storm threats, but for fire and flood, evacuation and lockdown. We have evacuation or lock down drills each term.
The health and wellbeing of all our students and staff remains my highest priority.
BE SAFE Students are reminded that as per the Dress Code, caps are not permitted at the
school. Hats must be either a legionnaire’s hat or a broad brimmed hat - no hat no play – old or new style is fine. We are a sun smart school.
Uniform
The key to wearing the school uniform is pride in appearance. Any public action,
good or bad, performed by a student wearing the school uniform, automatically
reflects on the school. Be it the yellow shirt or new uniform, we hope our
students wear the GSS uniform with pride.
Jewellery
Any items of jewellery must be for religious, medical, health or safety reasons except for approved jewellery such as a watch, signet ring or a maximum of two studs or sleepers in each ear lobe.
Some examples of jewellery which should not be worn include chains, necklaces, anklets, bangles, dangly/hanging earrings and silicone/rubber arm bands (unless provided by the school and then for a period of one week).
Hair
Shoulder length hair or longer is to be tied back away from the face for all
students. Firstly so they can see and secondly it will reduce the chance of them
catching head lice.

Specialist Appointments
We are very happy to provide a school based report for Drs and any specialists. Generally specialists find
the school reports extremely valuable. Working together with the school, best outcomes are achieved for
your child/ren. The class teacher will work with the Principal, Deputy Principal or HOSES to prepare the
letter.
Please:
Let your child’s class teacher and the office know as soon as you know about appointments.
Follow up with the class teacher 2 days before appointments as a reminder.
Thank You
Our school will proudly stand united with schools across Australia on Friday 16 March to mark the eighth National
Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).
I know our school community, along with other Australian schools, will be sending a powerful message that bullying
and violence, in or outside the classroom, are not okay at any time. Through positive action we can make a real
change.
Imagine a world free from bullying activities are being held in classrooms to get students thinking and expressing
their creative side to say ‘Bullying. No Way!’. Please lock Friday 16 March in your calendars and join our school
community in saying ‘Bullying. No Way!’
Parents and carers are encouraged to have open and honest conversations with their children about bullying in all
forms. For helpful resources visit the Bullying. No Way! website.
Get this school year off to the best start possible! Set up your children for success – whether it’s at the start, middle or end of their schooling years – with Triple P.
Triple P is a positive parenting toolbox proven to help young people learn new skills, cope with stress, better handle
their emotions, and communicate more effectively. You’ll even notice the difference at home. Plus, it’s free in
Queensland. You can do it online, in large seminar or small group sessions, or one-on-one. Find our more

Leaders Induction 2018
On Wednesday 14th of February we welcomed our student leaders for 2018. These leaders have been selected by their
peers to represent the student body in public functions, sporting and cultural events and fulfil supporting and helpful
roles around the school.
Our student leaders nominate for these positions based on their track record of being active and responsible members of
our school community and acting as role models for others. It was a very proud moment for us as a school to see our
new student leaders accept their badges and new roles.
Thank you to LVRC Mayor Ms Tanya Milligan, LDHS Mandy Staines and P&C President Mrs Amanda Whiting for
presenting badges to our newly elected Leaders.
Congratulations and we are looking forward to a great year.

Positive Behaviour Learning
Each fortnight we have a specific focus on a selected behaviour. Over these two weeks we are focusing on “I
know that every day counts”. Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance is associated, on
average, with higher student achievement. Additionally, attending school every day helps children to build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork
and resilience. If your child is unwell we encourage you to keep them at home until fully recovered. Lessons devoted to teaching our students what this looks like can be observed in
many areas across our school. At home you can support your child’s learning by having a conversation about the fortnightly behaviour.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

Reading Pirates by 3S
“BEWARE”
Our pirates are looking for treasure on deserted islands whilst using their oral language skills with
strategies we are focusing on.
Brayton, Smokey and Xander really loved learning new vocab that we placed on our Pirate hats, and using
our Chunky Monkey strategy in various texts.
Erin and Hanna made treasure maps so we could use our comprehension skills to locate hidden treasure.
Hamza and Iangica really enjoyed using oral vocab to discuss the tea staining, scrunching and using the
Skippy Frog strategy in these activities.
5 and 10 c pieces To help raise money to buy table and seating or the playground areas we are collecting 5 and 10 cent pieces. Please bring in any loose change to help buy more seating.
