It means something to put on the Averitt uniform. Our uniforms represent “The Power of One” – the power of teamwork, the power of consistency, the power of our culture, the power of professionalism, and the power of customer service.
All those values have been hallmarks of our team since 1971, and we can take pride in knowing that’s what our customers expect when they see Averitt on our chests. I’m proud to wear the same colors as you, and I know there is power in those colors – “The Power of One.”
OUR DRIVING FORCE IS PEOPLE.

It’s true of any company.
Without people, orders aren’t filled. Trucks sit idle. Phones go unanswered.
Any company runs on the strength of its people. But at Averitt, that relationship runs deeper.
For you, our associates, a day spent in Averitt Red is about far more than just “doing the job.” It’s about an enthusiasm and professionalism that have made us the nation’s leader in freight transportation and supply chain management.
Things like that don’t happen when people simply go through the motions.
They only happen when people feel like they’re a part of something larger.
They happen when a great team thinks and acts more like a family.
They happen when passionate, talented people stand together and say…
“We are Averitt.”

ESSENTIALS
HOW TO ENSURE THAT DEDICATION NEVER FADES.Keeping enough of these essential uniform items on hand not only helps your clothes last longer, it also means you’re ready in case something gets torn or worn out. We suggest you always have at least the following on hand: five shirts, five pairs of pants, two hats, at least one outerwear item, a pair of black shoes, a pack of socks, one belt, and a pair of gloves.
That way you can help stretch your uniform credit while also being ready for the unexpected.

Any time you wear Averitt Red, you’re serving as the face of our team. And the condition of your clothes can say just as much about your pride in what you do as your performance. So here are a few tips for keeping your clothes in the best possible shape.

UNIFORM CARE
2726
REMEMBER THAT YOUR CLOTHES ARE PUTTING IN THE SAME HOURS YOU ARE.So give them the attention they deserve.
Keep your cool_ Never use hot water to wash your uniform, because it’s rough on the clothes and doesn’t get them any cleaner. Stick with cold water.
Flip things around_ Turning any embroidered or screen-printed items inside out before washing and drying will help ensure that the designs stay crisp and sharp.
Don’t stuff it_ Overloading a washing machine or dryer dramatically reduces its effectiveness. You want to make sure there’s plenty of room for the washer’s agitation and soap to do their work, and room for air to move around the clothes in the dryer.
The directions are there for a reason_ All items of clothing are different. And some require a little extra care. So take a moment to read the laundry directions to make sure you’re following the proper steps for each piece.
Take it easy_ Even the toughest clothes can benefit from a little TLC. So whenever possible, run your uniform items on the “gentle” cycle to help them last longer.
But don’t go soft_ If your work regularly results in stains on your uniform, avoid using fabric softeners – because they can make dirt and other stains harder to remove.
Low and slow_ Avoid using your machine dryer’s high heat setting, and opt instead for “low” or “cool dry.” High heat can shorten the life of your clothes.
JUST LIKE PRIDE, STAINS COME WITH THE TERRITORY.So here are a few tips on removing some of the more common ones.
GREASE & OIL_ In our line of work, these stains are almost inevitable. Luckily, there are a few approaches that work well for getting them out – such as coating the area with cornstarch, letting it soak for between 30 minutes to an hour, then laundering with heavy-duty detergent. But did you know that WD-40 works as well? It’s true – just spray it on the affected area and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then rub a little dish soap on the area, and wash as normal.
COFFEE & TEA_ It’s the fuel that keeps us going. But it’s not exactly friendly to clothes. So if you find yourself with these telltale stains, try presoaking the garment in a solution of liquid laundry detergent and cool water (about 2 tablespoons of detergent to 1 gallon of water) for at least 30 minutes. Then launder in warm or hot water. (We know, we said not to use hot water for general laundry. But tough stains call for tough measures!)
DIESEL FUEL_ First off, it’s best to hang the garment outside. (No sense stinking up the rest of your hamper!) If there’s a significant amount of fuel, hose the garment off, wring it out (wearing rubber gloves), and let it hang outside for at least 24 hours. Once the smell is gone, it’s safe to put it in the washing machine. Set the machine for the largest possible load, and use the hottest water the garment will tolerate. Add ¼ cup of ammonia and a little extra laundry detergent, and wash as usual. Only after the smell or stain is completely gone is it safe to put the garment in the dryer. Tip: Either 2 cups of vinegar or a cup of vodka (yes, really!) will also help eliminate the odor. Just don’t use them both at the same time.
UNIFORM CARE
A Few Overal l Guidelines:1_ Blotting, good. Rubbing, bad. Rubbing a stain only works it deeper into the fibers and causes damage to the garment. Always blot stains first to remove any excess.
2_ Take the test. You’ve heard it before, but remember to test any stain removal products in an inconspicuous spot before applying to any noticeable area. You want to make sure it’s not going to change the color of the garment itself. And beware of bleach – because using bleach-based cleaners on isolated areas can result in uneven colors.
3_ Eye before you dry. It’s easy to make oil-based stains worse. Sometimes it’s best to get it dry-cleaned.
2928
REPAIR OR RECYCLE?If your shirt has seen better days, find out how you can bring it back to life or if you should send it to a new home.
REPAIR
Stained col lar. Next time you wash it, pretreat the collar with hair shampoo.
Keep it from happening again by wearing it only once between washes.
Stains under the arm. Try dissolving a few denture-
cleansing tablets in a bowl of warm water, or use a
bit of OxiClean.
Missing buttons. You probably knew this one,
but a needle and thread are the only tools you need.
RECYCLE
Frayed col lar. You could have a collar repaired, but it’s not worth the time and money.
Frayed cuffs. Getting the cuffs replaced is just as expensive as getting a new shirt and not nearly as rewarding.
Faded color. You’ve worn all the Averitt Red out of it. That’s good, but it’s time to move on.
®
STEP UP.Although easy to overlook, your shoes are a vital part of your overall uniform. So here are a few tips to keeping them in tip-top shape.
“TREE-T” THEM RIGHT_ You already know that your feet perspire over the course of the day. But did you know that on a normal day they can produce over 1/4 cup of moisture? (And up to 1/2 cup on an active day.) Left alone, that moisture is absorbed permanently into the shoe lining, decreasing the life span of the shoes and contributing to odor. But cedar shoe trees not only help absorb this moisture, they maintain the shape of the shoes and naturally deodorize them at the same time.
CARING FOR LEATHER SHOES_ It’s important to polish your leather shoes at least once a month – especially if you wear them on a regular basis. Start by wiping any excess dirt or dust off the surface with a damp cloth. Then apply a thin coat of polish with a soft cloth, being sure to keep it moving in a circular motion. Let the polish dry for a few minutes, then use a polish brush to finish the job.
REPAIRS_ No matter how well you take care of your shoes, problems can and will arise. But don’t give up on your shoes just because they start showing a little wear and tear. Taking them to a cobbler can be a great way to extend their life and save the expense of having to replace them altogether.

MEASURING
MEASURE TWICE, ORDER ONCE.To get the most accurate measurements.
MENNeck. Measure around the base of the neck, where a collared shirt would fit.
Chest. Measure across the fullest part of the chest, under the arms and across the back.
Waist. Measure over the shirt at the waistline, where pants are normally worn. Tighten tape as snug as you prefer pants to fit.
Inseam. After adjusting pants to the position normally worn, measure from the crotch to the top of the shoe (or desired length).
WOMENBust. Measure under the arms and around the fullest part of the bust.
Waist. Measure around the narrowest part of the natural waistline (just above the hip bones).
Hips. Measure around the fullest part of the hips (normally seven to eight inches below the natural waistline).
Sleeve length. Measure from the center of the outside collar over the shoulder, around elbow, to the point where the sleeve should end (usually bottom of the wrist bone).
· Do not attempt to take your own measurements. Many have tried, many have failed.
· Wear your work shoes when measuring. The style of shoe affects pant length.
· Do not adjust for shrinkage. The garments have already been sized with shrinkage in mind.
· Order the larger available size if you’re stuck between the two.
SAFETY
WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY, NOTHING TAKES THE PLACE OF COMMON SENSE.
It’s a simple truth that applies to virtually any company:
no safety equipment on earth can protect against inattentiveness.
Steel-toed boots… back supports… gloves… these
things are meant to protect against the bumps and bruises of
the day – they’re not meant to replace caution and focus.
Situational awareness is a skill that can serve you well in day-to-day life.
But it’s an essential part of any job at Averitt.
So remember to be mindful of your surroundings. And help keep yourself – and your fellow team members – safe.

Our Driving Force Is PeopleWe never lose sight of the fact that you’re the ones who make success a daily reality here at Averitt . So we asked a few of our associates to share their own stories. Here’s what they had to say.
No place like home.“Family” is a word that comes up often when discussing Averitt with 20 year team member Darrell Wooten, a Truckload driver out of Greensboro, NC. Because after nearly 15 years with Averitt, he actually left to try something new. “There was something inside me that I couldn’t get out until I tried. And that was special events.” So he went on the road with the Zac Brown Band. But he soon learned that the grass is not always greener. “It felt like running away from family,” he says. So in just four months, he was back. And he couldn’t be happier. “Averitt puts you in the best equipment, offers the best pay, with the best benefits. It’s like I always say, ‘There they go again, taking care of ya.’”
The personal touch. Berlinda Johnson drove with several competitors over the years, including a period as an Owner/Operator. And she understands that not all companies are created equal. So when looking for her next opportunity, she really did her homework before choosing Averitt. “It helps that red is my favorite color,” she jokes. But that’s the least of the reasons she’s happy with her choice. “Most places just treat you like a number. But here, they treat you like an individual. And the people are fantastic. I have yet to meet a negative ninny.” For Berlinda, that combination of personal attention and positivity plays a big role. “It’s what you look for in a company – a place that gives you peace of mind. Having that peace of mind when you’re a driver allows you to focus on doing your job.”

People make the difference. Robert Crabtree was an Owner/Operator for 30 years before joining Averitt. And he’s grateful for the chance to pass on his experience. “I want the next generation of drivers to enjoy the same success,” he says. And that’s made a lot easier when working with a company that cares as much about their associates as Averitt does. “The commitment we have to our people – you see it every day. It’s like one big ball of family.” And that sentiment is not lost on his students. “They see Gary Sasser come in during orientation and shake their hand to thank them for being there. You don’t see that other places.” That sense of everyone being “in it together” is one of the factors that Robert appreciates most. “They do a great job of showing how the success of Averitt can make you a success as an associate. They appreciate what we do for them, and they show it. Why wouldn’t I want to be here?”Robert Crabtree

What goes around comes around.Gary Craighead wasn’t interested in the long view when he originally signed on with Averitt. “When I started, I didn’t think I’d be here three years,” he says. “I just did it as a way to get over-the-road experience to work at my oldest brother’s trucking company.” That was over 31 years ago.Known most commonly by his CB handle “Dollar Bill,” Gary has definitely changed his tune over the years. “When I got here, I always heard people use the term ‘family.’ And I’d never thought of a company that way. But it’s sure turned into that. Drivers get together, go to each other’s houses, have cookouts. It really is like a big family.” And that goes for the broader company as well. “If you do something good for them, they’ll turn around and do something good for you. I hope to stay here ‘til it’s time for me to retire. And I don’t plan on that anytime soon.”Oh, and why “Dollar Bill,” you ask? “I used to tell everybody I’d leave on Sunday with a dollar in my pocket, and I was supposed to bring back the change when I got home on Friday.”

Lowran Knight
A chance to do more. “Opportunity” would be a good way to describe one of Lowran Knight’s favorite parts of working with Averitt.“A lot of places, some people work the dock, some of them just drive,” he says. “But here, I’ll work the dock, go out in the yard and switch, then go out and drive. You get a chance to do a lot of different things.”Which isn’t to say other things don’t play a role. “The pay and benefits here are a lot better, compared to another company I was working for,” he says. “That’s a big part of what keeps me around. I could go anywhere and get a job, just because of all the things I can do. But I choose to stay right here.”And another reason is the time it gives him to pursue his other interests – including playing drums at the church his family attends.“My wife is minister of music, so she sings…my daughter sings.” But does he sing as well? “Nah. She says I can, but I don’t believe her. I do background, that’s it.”
Featured on page 20
Mark and Martha Brennecke
Part of a team. As much as we like to talk about the “team” culture here at Averitt, we’d be the first to admit that Mark Brennecke and his wife, Martha, take that concept to another level altogether – as Team Shuttle Drivers out of Nashville. In fact, the team mentality is a big part of what they find most appealing about Averitt. “It’s an at-home, family atmosphere,” Mark says. “There’s a real sense of camaraderie. It’s a good feeling, when you’re driving down the road and you see another red Averitt truck coming toward you, because the lights will flash, or a hand will wave. That’s kinda fun. That’s nice.”Something else the couple finds nice is the focus on the equipment itself. “Pat, the head maintenance associate here in Nashville, runs a top-of-the-line, professional team that keeps the trucks rolling and rolling.”And he and Martha know a thing or two about keeping things rolling. Because when they’re not wearing their Averitt Red, they’re tending to their 30-acre farm and their menagerie of sheep, pigs, and chickens. Not to mention a horse. “So our off time is pretty full!”

*NEW U.S. VETERANAs proud as we are of our Averitt uniforms, we know there’s another uniform that means even more. So if you’re a current or former member of the United States military, you can showcase your pride and patriotism with the U.S. Veteran logo.

Gerardo (“Jerry”) Palacios
A focus on family. As you may have guessed by now, the word “family” comes up quite often when speaking to Averitt associates. But while most people use the term to describe the closeness and mutual respect between team members, Jerry Palacios focuses on a different aspect. For him, one of the most notable parts of working with Averitt is the respect and attention the company pays to the associates’ own families – by working to ensure that quality “home time” is never sacrificed. “My last job,” he says, “we’d be out three or four weeks at a time. And we were only allowed one holiday.” A situation that changed dramatically once a friend introduced him to Averitt. “Now, I’m on the road for a week, and home on weekends. And my first year was the first time I’d been home for more than one holiday in eight years. People didn’t recognize me!” And he’s particularly grateful for that extra home time, which he spends doting on his two granddaughters in Laredo. (A pair of little girls who, he’s quick to admit, “have me wrapped around their fingers.”)

Christine Schrader
It all adds up. When asked for some of the reasons she’s with Averitt, Christine Schrader doesn’t hesitate.“Here, the interactions with drivers and leadership are on a more personal level. I’ve worked for other companies where they didn’t even know your name. And being one of the very few female drivers at some of those places, I didn’t exactly blend in!”But that’s only part of the story. “Being appreciated only goes so far. You need that extra boost. And Averitt has the overall package – the best equipment and benefits to tie it all together. Also, at Averitt, people know multiple roles and can step in to help with someone else’s job. Which helps make sure everything continues to run smoothly.”So what does she do when she’s not behind the wheel? Relaxes either at home, or out camping with friends. Preferably around a fire pit.“Dealing with traffic in the city, every day it seems to get worse and worse. So you need that down time, just to remember what the paycheck’s for.”
