GL finally got over the hump in its consolation game, downing Bergen County foe Dumont 21-13 for its lone victory. A season that includes a record under .500 and no playoff participation is not what eighth- year head coach Terry Hanratty comes to expect. "We hope to get back to what we were like the previous six years. which means making the playoffs," Hanratty said. "In order to improve we have to stay healthy, piny hard together and give it all we've got. 'Tve got a great bunch of kids here that arc working really hard." This time last year Hanratty knew he was losing senior John Jennings to concentrating on baseball and was not going to have senior Brendan DiLandro back alter DiLandro had shoulder surgery during the summer. DiLandro was healthy enough to play basketball and Hanratty said he is now playing football at Delaware. Jennings is at Rutgers as a recruited walk-on after leading the baseball team to its second state championship. This year, seniors Joey Graziano and /ack Boyer did not come out because of injuries sustained before football season. •Joe} took the rest of the sum- mer oft" because of his back." llanratty said. "He's resting up and going to therapy." Graziano already gave St. John's baseball a verbal commitment before this past baseball season. Graziano was the quarterback and safety on last year's squad. Boyer started on offense at right guard. "We had to move on and keep practicing like he (Graziano) was- n't going to be here." Hanratty said. Boyer has back issues as well. "Zaek called me in the summer and said his hack was bothering him," Hanratty said. "He told me two week before camp. ""It seems to be a trend every year where we lose one or two starters." Taking over under center is sen- ior Rendyll Moorman, who was at wide receiver last year. Moving over to right guard is junior Mike DeMarco. "We moved Rendyll to quarter- back and Mike to guard." Hanratty said. "Rendyll ean throw and run and he's very athletic. He's done a good job so far." llanratty said thai Moorman did play a little quarterback on the junior varsity level. "We will alternate our offense," llanratty said. "We'll run and pass and go Wildcat a little bit." Although Moorman will be missed at wide receiver, he will have capable targets to throw to, including juniors Justin Ennis and Michael Murpln and senior Will Smith. "Murphy is a track star and has been limed 4.4 in the 40-yard dash." Hanratty said. "He's a real burner. We really think Murphy can be a. great help. He's really fast." Back to lead the ground game is three-year starter Andrew Romeo. Hanratt) said Romeo rushed for 1.20(1 yards as a junior last season. "We had a three-year starter at quarterback, he was established, so we thought we would be okay there." Hanratty said. "'But when we lost Joey we had to do some scrambling."
