Academic Recognition
Union has grown from a school that recognized one student for an academic award each year, to one that constantly recognizes academic achievement and success. We will sustain and increase that momentum in 2021‐22.

9. Traffic Guard: will be stationed on Anthony St. This is the street onto which cars pull out from the BACK driveway. We put the traffic guard there since it is the area that needs her, most.
10. Front: there is no traffic guard. The flow of traffic and visibility of oncoming traffic in that
area is much better than in the back, where visibility of oncoming cars – both ways – on Anthony Street creates higher risks for accidents.
Amazing Shake
Our program that teaches “soft skills” to students. These skills are just as important in being a successful worker and citizen as good grades.
Union has sent previous Amazing Shake (Arena) winners to compete to the National Amazing Shake competition at the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta. Our students, even though they are 5th graders competing against middle schoolers from mostly private schools from across the country, have scored in the top 20 – twice, in the top 40 – twice, and top 80 (out of over 300 contestants)
Jr. Amazing Shake = K, 1st, and 2nd. May 9 Amazing Shake – Work The Room = 3rd. May 10 Amazing Shake – Circle of Doom = 4th. May 12 Amazing Shake – The ARENA = 5th. May 17 Winner of The ARENA is given a free admission to the National Amazing Shake competition in Atlanta, GA in the spring of each school year.
Spring 2022: Top 20 of Work the Room, Circle of Doom and The ARENA have a pizza and ice cream sundae party.

Art
Quinton Creasy is one major reason why Union changed from “STEM” to “STEAM”.
Art Club: Quinton opens it up to K‐5. She will have schedules and names of children who are joining Art Club.
Hopefully, Mrs. Creasy can have art exhibits again (Artome’ was a great event in 2019‐20). Art Club information will be sent home during the first few weeks of school.

Assistant Principal
We are extremely blessed to have ABBY BROSCHE as our A.P. Mrs. Brosche will lead our ELA program: observations, evaluations, coaching, working with our new LE re: coaching & modeling, data meetings re: ELA, PLCs re: ELA.
Mrs. Brosche taught ELA at Shafer and Merrol Hyde: she’s worked with intervention kids, high achieving kids, and – of course – magnet school kids.
Mrs. Brosche and LT will share all responsibilities re: Administration. Mrs. Brosche’s office is the office used by LT from 2017‐2019.
Attendance Please do not send your child to school, sick. This is especially important as COVID‐19 is still among us, in new variants, and could affect the health of other students (and their families) as well as that of Union teachers and staff.
If a child has a fever before school, please keep her/him at home. Please do not give Tylenol to get the fever down so that the child can be sent to school.
If a child has a fever, they need to be fever‐free for 24 hours before sending them to school.
If you are getting tested for COVID‐19, please wait until your results have been returned before sending your child to school.
If you are positive for COVID‐19, then the child(ren) living with you is a household close contact and cannot come to school a number of days that is determined by the local health department.
Absences: All students are required to bring a note from home on the school day that follows an absence.
Students are allowed FIVE (5) parent note absences per semester. If your child’s absence coincides with an appointment with a doctor, please provide a copy of a doctor’s note for our record keeping.
A student who has an excessive number of absences may be required to show a doctor’s statement to substantiate the illness.
THREE*** UNEXCUSED ABSENCES FOR THE YEAR = REFERRAL TO TRUANCY. Cases of excessive absences will result in the parent and child(ren) having to come to the school for an attendance meeting where an Attendance Contract will be signed. Further issues will result in the case being referred to the attendance department of Sumner County Schools.
Make‐up work may be requested by calling the office by 11:00 AM. All materials, books, etc. may be picked up in the office, later during the school day.
Early Dismissal: Parents of students leaving school early for doctor appointments, etc., must come to the office to sign out the child.
Anyone who is signing out a child will be required to present a photo ID and must be listed on the child’s data card as a person who’s approved to pick up the child.
For students who become ill during the day, parents/guardians will be called to pick them up from school.
***Any child who is too ill to stay in class, or has a fever, must go home. We ask that parents not send their children to school when they are running a temperature or show other signs of needing medical attention.
Frequent early dismissals are reported to the School Board’s Attendance Department in the same manner as absences or tardies.
School Day: Union’s school hours are 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Students who arrive before 7:50 a.m. are to report to the gym (K‐2), cafeteria (3rd) or Library Hallway (4th‐5th).
If a K‐5 student wishes to participate in the breakfast program, she/he should report to the cafeteria as directed by gym or hallway supervisors.
Students are dismissed from the gym and cafeteria to their homerooms at 7:50 a.m. Before and After School childcare is available through the RAIDERS KIDZ ZONE. All applications should be filled out through this program. Our director of Kidz Zone is Sonja Richardson.
Instruction begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and dismissal begins at 3:00 p.m. *******A student is considered “present for a school day” if she/he is present from 8:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Tardies: School officially begins at 8:00 a.m. Instruction will begin at 8:00 a.m. Students must be in the building by 8:00 a.m. to be counted as ‘on time’. 8:01 a.m. is considered tardy. Announcements will begin at 8:02 a.m. It is very disruptive to classroom instruction when students arrive to class late, so, please try to have your child at school on time.
Students who arrive late must report to the office and be signed in by their parent/guardian.
All tardies are counted as time absent; therefore, it will affect perfect attendance records. Please adjust your schedule so your child can be in their classroom by 8:00 a.m. Cases of excessive tardies will be referred to the attendance department after the ***15th tardy/early dismissal for the school year.
Beta Club
Established in 2017‐18 so that our top academicians could become members of a recognized, highly reputable academic club.
Open to 4th graders, after the first semester. We use the traditional A‐F system in 4th and use the first semester grades to determine Beta Club qualification (at least 1 A and 3 B’s…no C’s).
Induction Ceremony: February 2022 Members must maintain A/B averages in the four core subjects (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies)
Bully-Free School
Union students are encouraged to tell a Union employee if they ever feel threatened while at Union STEAM, whether it’s in a classroom, restroom, on the playground, in the hallways, etc.
Union’s goal is to provide a safe, caring environment for all of our students. Serious threats, harassment, and bullying (perpetual name calling, cyber‐based, physical, teasing, etc.) will not be tolerated.
Every effort will be made to resolve the situation and to help our students feel safe while at Union Elementary.
Incidents that are repeated should be reported to school officials as immediately as possible so that a formal investigation into bullying accusations can begin.
Appropriate consequences such as student conferences, parent conferences, suspensions, and other acceptable consequences will be considered after an investigation into bullying allegations.
Cafeteria

Students are supervised by Related Arts teachers, teacher assistants and, at times, Mr. Taylor.
All students are under the authority of the adult employees of Union STEAM and must obey the cafeteria rules.
Students are expected to behave in the cafeteria in the same courteous manner as at home or in a restaurant. We only use “Quiet Lunches” when it’s necessary. We simply ask students to speak to each other “quietly”, with an “inside voice”…no yelling or loud noise making.
Please emphasize to your child the importance of good cafeteria manners. Students receive 30 minutes for lunch. Students may eat breakfast at school between 7:20 – 7:50 a.m. Students should be finished with breakfast before 7:50 in order to be in class before 8:00 a.m.
Price of Breakfast: FREE! The F.D.A program was extended to the SY 2021‐2022! Price of Lunch: FREE! Price of ala carte items: varies – please check with our café manager
CAFETERIA RULES:
Obtain all food, utensils, napkins, etc., on the first trip through the serving line. Do not go back for any items.
Sit in assigned seating area. Each class has two tables at which they need to sit. If a student needs help, he/she should raise his/her hand. Assistants and Mr. Taylor are present to help but cannot “wait on” children, as they have to supervise >100 other students in the cafeteria.
Students are responsible for cleaning up after themselves. Students may not leave the cafeteria during lunch without permission. Parents are encouraged to send containers or wrapping that children can open without adult help. Glass bottled drinks are not allowed.
No running, loud talking, yelling, throwing food, touching others’ food, or horseplay. Students may not visit with other students at other tables during the lunch period. If rules are not followed, a student may be required to sit in a designated are in the cafeteria; perhaps, eating alone.
***Please alert all areas of the school program and your child’s teacher to any food allergies. Our office staff, nurse, and cafeteria staff should be informed of any food allergies.
Choir

Clinic Union STEAM has a clinic where a sick or injured child may temporarily remain until a parent or guardian can arrive to pick up him/her.
Union’s School Nurse is ASHLEY HARRIS Aspirin, Tylenol, and any other pain/fever medication cannot be provided to students by Union STEAM.
All prescription and non‐prescription medication will be administered through the office. Please limit the numbers of dosage as much as possible. A permission form is available in the office and MUST be filled out in order for office staff or the school nurse to administer any medication.
A form, "Permission for Administration of Prescription Medicine", MUST be filled out and signed by the DOCTOR before any medication will be given at Union STEAM.
All medication must come to school in the original pharmacy container. Students who become ill during the day may call a parent to come pick them up from school.

Field Trips Union is allowed 2 per year. Fall and Spring. During the school year, field trips may be taken to various places designed to enhance the educational program of your children. Parent volunteers, for the supervision of our students, are vital for the success of these trips.
2021‐22: PARENTS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN CLASSES ON FIELD TRIPS! Guidelines for our volunteers are as follows:
Please do not ask to bring younger or older children with you if you are volunteering to supervise on the trip.
Please do not ask for your child or others to be transported in your private vehicle. Students participating in field trip activities must ride the school provided transportation, unless there is an extreme circumstance.
If you sign out your child from the field trip site, you cannot sign out another person’s child, even with their permission. That is a district policy that has been in place for several years.
Remember, by volunteering to help, the teacher needs your help with the entire Class, and not just your child.
PLEASE NOTE: A required Indemnity Agreement and Consent form will be sent home as per Board policy. The completed form must be returned. Without it, your child will not be allowed to attend the field trip.

Grades K-3 3 ‐ On Track ‐ A student is meeting the grade level expectations for a standard. 2 ‐ Approaching‐ A 2 indicates that the child has some knowledge of the standard and is approaching mastery but hasn’t fully mastered the content.
1 ‐ Below‐ A student is below grade level expectations and only has some basic knowledge of the standard WITH teacher help.
Grading Policy
K – 3rd
Zero Policy‐ SBRC grades/scores are based on a scale of mastery from 1‐3. Teachers use a variety of class work, anecdotal notes, observations & informal assessments during small & whole group instruction, & formal assessments with a rubric provided by the county to assign students' scores of 1,2,3.
Graded Items Policy‐ Students' scores of a standard are based on classwork, homework, anecdotal notes, assessments, & rubrics used to identify a student's mastery. Some standards are expected to be mastered by a certain quarter while others are expected to be mastered by the end of the year. This is indicated on the SBRC. Students also work on project‐based assignments for Science and Social Studies and scores are assigned based on understanding of the tasks and completion of the project.
Re‐Do Policy‐If a student completes class work and/or homework without showing mastery, the teacher will offer re‐teaching and more opportunities to show mastery before the progress report or report card is sent home. At mid quarter progress report or on the SBRC, students will be assigned a score of 1‐4 to show level of mastery of that particular standard at that time.
Extra Grade Opportunities‐ If a student receives a lower than mastery score for a standard, that skill can be retaught and reassessed for the next progress report or end of quarter report card.
Late Work Penalty‐ Late work is not taken into consideration for the SBRC. Homework Policy‐ Daily Homework should not exceed 20‐30 minutes for grades K‐3.
Homework is used to support the skills we are currently working on. Students are expected to read each night (approx. 15‐20 minutes) and practice Sight Words (approx. 5 minutes) a few times a week. All homework is used for practice to ensure student success with minimal frustration. Studying for a test is homework.
Grading Policy
4th – 5th Grade
Purpose – Grading occurs within classrooms to provide a pure representation of a student’s level of mastery of standards to all stakeholders involved in the student’s academic plan. The following policies and practices will reinforce this purpose.
Zero Policy ‐ Students will not receive a zero for missing or incomplete classwork or homework. Every effort will be made on the part of the teacher and, most importantly, by the student, to ensure that all students complete assignments. Students will complete missing or incomplete assignments at Union, at times designated by the classroom teacher. Students in grades 4 and 5 are expected to maintain their proper responsibilities for completing assigned classwork and homework. Students must learn that zeros are not acceptable in the real world. Work assignments must be completed at all levels of education and in life.
Graded Items Policy ‐ Teachers will grade assignments that represent a student’s independent ability to illustrate mastery or progress towards mastery. Some classwork and all homework items that are practice will be assessed formatively by the teacher and will NOT be averaged as a grade. Unit assessments and other summative assessments may be weighed more, as they are a more accurate representation of a student’s mastery of a standard.
Re‐Do Policy ‐ When a student completes an assessment that does not accurately represent the student’s level of mastery towards a standard, the teacher will provide the student with one re‐do opportunity. The grade on the re‐do assessment may replace the original assessment grade at the teacher’s discretion. EXAMPLE: a student earns a 60 on an assignment or assessment. When given the opportunity to correct the incorrect problems on the assignment /assessment, he/she is able to recover ½ of the points lost on the original assignment /assessment. If the student completely corrects all missed items on the assignment /assessment, his/her final score would be an “80”.
Extra Credit Opportunities – Due to the Re‐Do policy, which allows students to correct mistakes/errors and receive a higher grade for an assignment /assessment, “extra credit” will not be given. Being able to pull up a score of, for example, 80 to a 90 by correcting errors/mistakes, is much more meaningful to student learning and standards mastery than assigning extra credit assignments.
Late Work Policy ‐ Late work will be accepted with a grading penalty of 10 points per day. Once a student has failed to turn in an assignment or assessment after 3 days, he/she will complete the work with Mr. Taylor, enabling the student to earn at least a 70 on the missing assignment/assessment. When failing to turn in assignments or complete assessments, students will receive consequences related to the loss of privileges (i.e. quiet lunch, study hall).
Homework Policy – Daily homework should not exceed 45 minutes in grades 4 and 5. Homework should support the reinforcement of standards taught or should provide an opportunity for pre‐teaching of standards that will be taught during the current unit. Homework should be provided as intentional practice at a level that ensures student success with minimal frustration. Studying for a test is considered homework.

Kidz Zone
Union Elementary provides before‐ and after‐school care for interested families. For more information about Kidz Zone, please visit our school website. The Kidz Zone staff provides a nurturing and very safe environment. Kidz Zone is licensed through the TN Department of Education. Mission Union Elementary STEAM and Demonstration School is committed to promoting high‐quality instruction to students with an emphasis in the provisions of the foundation of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education.
Monarch Launch
Each July/August/September, we harvest Monarch Butterflies. Doing so allows our students to see – firsthand – the metamorphosis of the butterfly from egg to Monarch.
From 2018‐2020, we moved our huge Monarch Butterfly Launch event to Triple Creek Park, naming it, “Monarch In The Park”. We hope to have this event, again, in September 2021.
We have a musical program, followed by the release of, often, hundreds of Monarch Butterflies.
Collins Crew will help Mrs. Thorne harvest the Monarchs.
Monarch Run
This is our Fall Fundraiser for the school. Will occur in September 2021. Students run laps for donations – per lap – on our two tracks. Parents are welcome to attend this event.
Our school goal for 2021: $40,000. We will use it to further advance our STEAM programs.

Allison Bush is another key to Union moving from “STEM” to “STEAM”.
Music class is top‐notch. Music programs are top‐quality. Music groups: Percussion and Choir. Hopefully, 2021‐22 will see our programs revived. May 2021 was a good start!
New Crew Debut
This is an assembly that occurs on the first day of school, where our new students get to walk the Red Carpet, spin the House Wheel, and be cheered on by their new schoolmates.
It’s a way to show that everyone is welcome at Union and that, after day one, no one is “new”…we are all one family.
We do not call children, “Transfers”. We call them New Crew and in a positive light. Once they spin the Wheel, they get a certificate titled, “One of Us”. New Crew students have HELPED our scores, not hurt them.

Parties According to School Board Policy, there may be three (3) classroom parties (Holidays) at the elementary level. This option is at the discretion of the classroom teacher and the administration.
All Union Grade Teams have decided to not have birthday parties in the classroom. Teachers have asked that parents bring treats for the children in a child’s classroom to the cafeteria during lunch, where they can be passed out to each child before their lunch time is over. As in years past, we continue to ask that you not send birthday gifts to the school.
Please do not send party invitations to school unless there is one for every child in the class. Also, we ask that parents, who would like to send cupcakes or other items for birthday celebrations, please do so by making arrangements with the teacher in advance. These treats cannot be passed out in the cafeteria.
PE Coach G (Thomas Gabrielle) is a great role model and caring teacher for our kids. Our
kids LOVE to go to PE. Most PE classes will meet in the gym. However, there may be times that Coach utilizes the track, kickball field, or soccer fields.
If your child has any type of medical reason to not participate in PE, short‐ or long‐term, please share that information with your child’s teacher Coach G, Mr. Taylor, Mrs. Brosche, and Nurse Ashley Harris.
Teachers will share their Related Arts schedules with parents so that children are wearing or bring to wear, athletic shoes on PE Days. NOTE: every 9 weeks, those days change, so teachers will send new R.A. schedules, before the beginning of each 9 weeks period.
Pen Pals
Each House member is assigned a Pen Pal who is also in their House. Grades 3‐5 kids are paired with students in grades K‐2. Pen Pals have a schedule to use when writing their Pen Pals; but, of course, they can write them more often if they choose.
A‐Team members are the couriers for these Pen Pal letters.
Penny Wars Every Spring. Our PTO fundraiser that is used to pay the salary of our STEM Lab teacher and to pay for costs of upkeep of our gardens, chicken coop, and greenhouse.
2022 Goal: Likely, $20,000 (this will be a four‐peat accomplishment, after years of raising between $14‐15K)

Raider Reserve
Sumner Bank & Trust offers the RAIDER RESERVE at Union STEAM. The Raider Reserve and Sumner Bank & Trust provides students with the opportunity to learn good money‐saving practices. The students will receive interest on their savings accounts as well as other benefits by participating in this program. Students have the option of keeping the account open even after they leave Union STEAM for middle school. *Bank days: one Friday during each month (with two bank dates during two of the months). HOURS: 7:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. This may change if we are out for scheduled/unplanned events. An announcement will be made before each bank day to remind students to bring their deposits.

Related Arts Art Library Music PE 45 minutes per day. On some days, the overall schedule for Union is modified and there are less minutes to Related Arts. At times, RA will be involved in school events such as Raider Rallies.
You will go to your Monday Related Arts class, again on Friday. The rotation of Related Arts changes every 9 weeks so that you have each of the four Related Arts classes 2x per week – during one 9 weeks period.
Safety Patrol
Each 9 weeks, students serve as Safety Patrol helpers. Front driveway and back driveway. Supervised by Mr. Taylor, Coach G, and SRO Parker. They open car doors for kids and, at times, walk upset students into the building as a big buddy.
Open to 4th and 5th graders. House Points are assigned – each week – to Safety Patrol members.
School Psychologist
We are blessed to have Stacey Gilreath, supervisor of school psychologists, as Union’s own S.P.
Mrs. Gilreath serves as a consultant to families and school staff to address the academic, social, and behavioral needs of students. The school psychologist works in a collaborative role with educators and families to assess students for a suspected disability when there is an educational deficit compared to their grade level peers.

2. Technology: we have worked hard to drastically increase our iPad offerings to grades K‐2 and to have 1:1 devices for all students in TCAP grades (3rd – 5th)
3. Engineering: whether in our STEM lab, Media Center, or classrooms, the Engineering Design Process is fully alive at Union
4. Arts: we have top‐notch Music and Art programs: Our music class consists of grade‐level performance. Our Music teacher has a strong choir and percussion ensemble. The Music department puts on top‐quality performances during the school year. Mrs. Bush is a top‐notch teacher!
Our Art club is led by THE most talented and dedicated art teacher around, Mrs. Quinton Creasy.
Our Librarian is not just a librarian. She’s a media specialist. She’s a technology guru. She loves and incorporates STEM into her classes. Michelle Howell is a great asset to our school.
