Blackstock begins his 33rd season as athletic director at Union University, In the spring of 2006, Dr. Blackstock returned to the coaching ranks as he took over the softball head coaching duties. Over his career, Blackstock has coached baseball, women’s basketball, and softball in addition to his athletic director duties.

Dr. David Blackstock will be leading an athletic department that is currently made up of 10 varsity sports (women: soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball, softball; men: soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, golf) and two junior varsity sports (men’s and women’s soccer). For his efforts as athletic director during the 2003-04 season, Blackstock was voted the TranSouth Conference AD of the Year.

Blackstock spent 17 seasons at the helm of the women’s basketball program at Union, where he compiled a 509-89 overall record, earning his 500th career victory during the 1998-99 season. Numerous accomplishments have been a part of his basketball coaching career, including the 1998 NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship. In addition to the national title, Blackstock was named NAIA Coach of the Year and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1999.

Blackstock began his campaign at Union University as a baseball player in 1960 where he played for the Bulldogs until 1964. In 1967, Blackstock graduated from Memphis State University with a Master of Education degree and then moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he received his doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi. Blackstock then returned to Union in 1973 as athletic director and instructor in the physical education department.

Blackstock took over the baseball program in 1977 where he eventually guided the team to a third place finish in the NAIA World Series in 1983, the only season Union has participated in the event. It was at that same time that Blackstock turned his attention to the women’s basketball program. During the Lady Bulldog campaign, Blackstock went to the NAIA District 24 finals 11 times, capturing five district crowns, the 1998 national championship, and 12 conference championships. He guided the team to 10 national tournament berths in his final 12 seasons, participating three times in the title game.

David S. Dockery was elected the 15th president of Union University on December 8, 1995. Since that time the university has seen an increase in student enrollment from 1975 in the Fall of 1996 to 3,100 in 2006. The number of donors to the university has increased from around 2000 to over 4300. The significant increase in giving to the university during this period has included twelve of the largest gifts in Union’s long history. Dr. Dockery is providing leadership for a major five year strategic plan called Union 2010: A Vision for Excellence. The plan will be enabled by a $110 million campaign, of which nearly $80 million has been raised.

During his tenure the university has seen a strong increase in commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship. Union has been listed among the top tier institutions in the South each of the past ten years by U.S. News and World Report. Union has also been recognized during this time by Peterson’s Competitive College Guide, the Time/Princeton Review, and Templeton’s Colleges that Encourage Character Development.

The university has added several new degree programs including undergraduate majors in digital media studies, engineering, physics, sports medicine, political science, and ethics, among others, and graduate programs in business, intercultural studies, Christian studies, nursing, and education, including the doctor of education program and a graduate program in nurse anesthesia. Faculty development programs have been greatly enhanced and the breadth of student services has been visibly increased. A new campus master plan has seen the addition of two residence halls, the Miller Tower, Jennings Hall, Hammons Hall, the Fesmire baseball/softball complex, Fesmire Athletic Fieldhouse, and a soccer complex. Construction began on White Hall, a new 63,000 square foot science facility in 2005. A branch campus was established in Germantown, TN in 1997, which offers programs in education, business, nursing, and Christian studies.

Dockery is the author or editor of twenty-five books including The Holman Bible Handbook, Biblical Interpretation Then and Now, Theologians of the Baptist Tradition, and Shaping a Christian Worldview. In addition he has contributed to nearly thirty others including some of the most important reference books of the past decade such as The Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, The Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, The Holman Bible Dictionary, The Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology, and Religion in Geschichte und Gegenwart. He is the author of almost 200 articles, chapters, and book reviews. Turner, a 1979 graduate of David Lipscomb University, is now in his 13th season as the head coach of the Bulldogs. Coach Turner has led the Bulldogs to eight NAIA National Tournaments in his 12 years as head coach. Turner’s career coaching record at Union University is 290-122 (.704 winning percentage).

Turner has led the Union Bulldogs to five TranSouth Regular Season and Tournament Championships (1998, 1999, 2002, 2005, and 2006). Dating back to the beginning of the TranSouth Conference in the 1996-97 season, Turner’s Bulldogs have won five of the 10 championships.

Turner began his coaching career at the junior high and high school level in Georgia and Tennessee before moving to the collegiate level at Oklahoma Christian University. Returning to his Alma Mater, Turner served as an assistant coach at Lipscomb for nine years, winning an NAIA National Championship in 1986. Then in 1994, Turner accepted his first college head coaching position at Union University. In his career, he has coached college basketball’s all-time leading scorer, all-time assists leader, all-time steals leader, and all-time leading shot

blocker. He has coached 26 NAIA All-Americans in his career and has had 13 players to take their talents to the professional level.

In addition to his coaching duties at Union University, has served on the USA Basketball Selection Committee. This committee selects players to represent the United States in the World Games, Pan-Am Games, and other International events.

Turner also takes his knowledge of basketball to the national level by serving on the NAIA All-American Committee and the NAIA Championship Tournament Committee that organizes the men’s national basketball tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. He also has served as the NAIA National Rater for the TranSouth Conference.

Under the guidance of Turner, summer basketball camps at Union University have continued to grow. Through Turner’s hard work and dedication, Union averages over 1,500 boys and girls during the camps.

Turner’s goal for the men’s basketball program is more than concentrating on the score of a game. His desire is to not only see that his players be a part of the best teams that Union has ever had, but for those individuals to be the best people Union has ever had.

He and wife, Sherrie, have two daughters, Andrea, a junior at Union, and Alison, a freshman at Union.

2005-06 Season Summary...The 2005-06 season for Union was a historic season as Union peaked in the NAIA National Rankings at the No. 1 spot for the first time in the program’s history. The Bulldogs posted a 28-6 overall record and finished with a league best 9-3 record. During the season, Union knocked off Mountain State twice, both times, as MSU was ranked No. 1 in the NAIA. Union began the season with nine straight wins and won 13 of their first 14 games. During the season, Union went 9-4 versus teams ranked in the NAIA Top 25 final rankings.

Union lost two in a row for the only time all season in mid February, games in which they held leads late. However, from that point Union won eight games in a row to seal the TranSouth regular season co-championship and win the TranSouth Tournament for the second straight

season and fifth in 10 years.

Union advanced to their eighth national tournament in nine years, but lost to eventual national champion, Texas Wesleyan College.

Union players and coaches received numerous honors following the 2005-06 season. Kinley Sellers and Corey Burkett each were named NAIA All-Americans. Sellers, Burkett, and Ben Frederick were named first team All-Conference performers. Deywane Lee was named a second team All-Conference performer. Sellers was selected as the TranSouth Conference Newcomer of the Year, while Union head coach

In the NAIA National rankings, Union was No. 6 in the preseason poll and No. 5 in the final poll. Union peaked at No. 1 and dropped to as low as No. 17. Of the 12 polls during the year, Union was out of the top-10 just one time.

2006-07 Season Outlook...

Union University looks to follow up on an outstanding regular season in which the Bulldogs peaked at No. 1 in the NAIA for the first time in school history. Included in last season’s 28-6 record, Union was 9-4 versus teams ranked in the final NAIA poll, and were the only team to beat No. 1 Mountain State during the regular season (twice).

This season, Union is eyeing their 9th NAIA national tournament appearance in the past 10 seasons (highest finish was a quarterfinal appearance in 1999). The Bulldogs lost two of their top three scorers from last year (Kinley Sellers-14.2 and Corey Burket-12.6), however, have added some new and very talented players. NCAA DI transfer Brian Lake and JUCO transfer Tony Brown join the team along with others. Union has a very experienced and talented senior class made up of five players who each started at some point during last season. Three of the five seniors, Ben Frederick, Marcus Cooper, and Pierry Valmera, are four-year players.

Five seniors make up one of the most talented classes in recent history for Union. Post players Ben Frederick and Pierry Valmera have each been NAIA All-Americans in different seasons during their career. Marcus Cooper, a very explosive guard has been a starter for the majority of this career. Deywane Lee and Mack Bealim each joined Union for their junior seasons, but each made great contributions to the teams success in 2005-06. All five of these players started at some point during last season and each will be called on to lead this team deep into the NAIA postseason.

Newcomer Ryan Merriman, a transfer from Chattanooga State Community College, is the lone junior on this years team. Merriman’s ability to shoot the ball will make him a valuable player on this team.

The sophomore class is made up of three players, two of which are newcomers to the Bulldog program. The lone sophomore returner, Alan North of Jackson, has continued to improve and with his confidence in making big shots on the rise, he will be a valuable player off the bench. The two sophomore transfers are two of the most talented transfer player in quite some time. Brian Lake, of Bolivar, joined

Union this season after spending the past two years at Middle Tennessee State University. Tony Brown transferred to Union from Kirtland Community College after being named a JUCO All-American as a freshman.

Two freshman complete the 2006-07 roster for Union. Tacuma Alexander joins Union from Harding Academy and brings a great deal of athletic ability to the team. He will get his opportunity to contribute early in his career for the Bulldogs. Kennedy Okello joins Union from Mombasa, Kenya and will redshirt this season as he continues to learn and add strength for his upcoming Union career.

This Union team has definitely reloaded to make a run at their third straight TranSouth Championship and another national tournament appearance. This senior class has been to the national tournament in each of their three seasons with Union. The experience is there and the time is now for this very talented Union team.

NAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs.

With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to strengthen academic eligibility requirements. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis.

The NAIA includes more than 60,000 participating student-athletes. The NAIA offers 24 separate championships in 13 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.

For more information on the NAIA, visit their web site at www.naia.org.

NAIA Champions of Character A Character Development Initiative

Mission StatementThe NAIA “Champions of Character” initiative will create an environment in which every NAIA student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.

Vision StatementWhen researching the NAIA’s place in the history of sport and higher education, several consistencies are apparent, including its dedication to academic achievement along with athletic excellence. Also apparent is the organization’s role as a trailblazer in providing equal opportunities for all student-athletes. Above all, there is an expectation of ethical behavior and a commitment to scholarship, sportsmanship and leadership.

Throughout its history, the NAIA and its members have used sport informally as a vehicle for character development. Because the athletic arena has become a microcosm of society, the time has come to bring a more formal emphasis to character development on every level and especially in sport. The NAIA “Champions of Character” initiative, through awareness, education and community involvement, will continue to develop an atmosphere of integrity in sport. Character and cooperation will grace our youth as they compete in athletics and life.
