Notice of intent to amend the
UNIS Hanoi Constitution
The Board of Directors gives notice of their
intention to revise Section 3, Article 5 of
the Constitution as follows (bolded type
represents proposed new wording and
strike-through represents proposed deletions):
Three (3) voting members from the UN Community shall
be appointed by the United Nations Resident Coordinator
in Hanoi in consultation with the UNIS Board of
Directors. One (1) of the United Nations appointees must
be a senior United Nations official who also serves as
liaison of the board with the United Nations. The UNRC
will designate one (1) of the United Nations appointees to
serve as liaison of the board with the United Nations. The
other two (2) United Nations appointees should be from
the United Nations community.
The intention of this amendment is to provide the UNRC
with more flexibility in making her appointments to the
Board of Directors.
The Board is required to give notice of any amendments to
the United Nations Resident Coordinator and the UNIS
school community after the first reading of the proposed
amendment and at least 14 days prior to the second reading
and approval.
The Board received the proposed amendment for first
reading at the Board meeting 10th December, 2012 and
intends to consider it for the second time at the 9th April
Board meeting.
Any community member who wishes to comment on the
proposed amendment is invited to contact me via the

26th March.

Community meeting: Values
and Beliefs
Many thanks to everyone who attended
Wednesday evening’s meeting where we
heard back from the Board’s consultants
about their findings from the focus groups
that have taken place over the past 3 months.
It is clear that the UNIS Hanoi community has risen to the
challenge of helping the Board to articulate the School’s
values and beliefs and we now have a wealth of data to
guide the preparation of the final statements. Thanks to
everyone who has participated so far-more than 350 people
at the last count!
The consultants are now preparing their report which will
incorporate feedback from the community meeting and this
will be presented to the Task Force next month. We know
that more work lies ahead of us before we can finalise the
statements; watch out in Tin Tuc for more updates in the
coming months.

ADMISSIONS ARE OPEN FOR 2013-2014 Please register your child by submitting an enquiry form at www.unishanoi.org.
RE-ENROLMENT FOR 2013-2014 Tuition and Fees Agreements and invoices for deposit payments shall be issued directly to families in early March.
Placements for returning students must be secured by April 1, 2013.
Families are required to pay tuition deposits for each attending student and commit to the terms and conditions of
tuition and fees for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Dear Parents,
Responsible Use of Technology
We have been talking a great deal about ES students' responsible use of technology in recent weeks and this
article was brought to my attention by our Tech Facilitator, Michelle Matias. I believe it will be of interest to
many parents as we all work together to ensure that technology is seen and used responsibly as a valuable
tool to enhance learning. The more difficult questions are based around the access our young students have
to social media outside school and how quickly they learn new skills without always understanding the implications of their
interactions online and the 'footprint' that they leave. I would urge parents to read the linked article and if you have any
particular questions or concerns to contact us at school and we will support you in whatever way we can.

Expansion of our Discovery Programme
As many of you will now be aware, our Discovery Programme will expand next August to provide spaces for up to 32
children, rather than 16 as we have this year. Having separated Discovery children from the previously combined
Discovery/ Pre K classes in August 2012, we have seen a very successful and distinct programme develop for our three years
olds under the expert guidance of our Discovery teacher Miss Sarah Sharp. We are looking forward to welcoming an
additional Discovery teacher to work with Sarah and a team of Teaching Assistants next year. We will also be offering a full
day option for the first time in 2012/13 as well as the current schedule which finishes at 1300. The press release has already
gone out and a leaflet is in preparation for distribution next week. Also look out for an article in the next edition of “The
Word’ for further information that is being shared with the wider Hanoi community about our developments in the ECC.

Tickets for the Spring Fair will be available from Monday March 4.
When: Monday to Friday from March 4 to March 15
What time: 07:45 – 08:30 and 15:00-15:45 (Wednesday afternoons 14:00-14:45)
Where: In front of Canteen
How much: 80,000VND pre-sale, 100,000VND on the fair day
Everybody needs a ticket to enter the fair!
Buy vouchers together with tickets! All food/drink and some games will be priced in
vouchers. Avoid queues on event day!
We will sell vouchers in a package of 10 only for pre-sale (100,000VND for 10).

Bottle Donation Back by popular demand!
Our Operations Director, David Porter, will be running
his bottle game at this year’s fair. This adult game
requires donations of bottles. The bottles donated
should be new (full and unused) of whatever filling –
water, whiskey, milk, spaghetti sauce, lemonade, soy sauce,
champagne, eye drops (possibly not), tomato sauce, cough
mixture……
Big ones, little ones, miniatures ……… anything that
resembles a bottle…….
Check your shelves or stop by the market and drop them at
any collection location: Advancement Office, ES Office
or MSHS Office.

Spring Fair will kick off the party season as a fun family day for the entire community with food, games, shopping and
entertainment. The School Community Organisation are busy with final preparations, and there will be some wonderful new
activities this year including:

World Passport Quiz and Prize Draw for children with a Kindle and 100$ Amazon voucher
“Masterchef” Competition with KOTO and MSHS Students working and competing together for the coveted title.
Special guests from Sapa! Our MSHS students will host students from the Sin Chai school.

If you haven’t already got the date in your diary – please make sure you mark it in NOW!
This is a night of fine dining, fun and fundraising, with live music and some wonderful, exclusive,
silent auction items.
Most of all this is the night that we will raise the funds to create our Birthday Gift Fund. The Fund
aims to establish a legacy gift for our host country which will invest in those most in need in
Vietnam, with our Service Learning partners, for the next 25 years!
The event will be held in the magnificent ballroom of the Intercontinental Hanoi Westlake- our lead, platinum birthday
sponsors. The decorations and theme for the evening will take guests into the heart of the Old Quarter’s 36 Streets and MS
student art will create the spectacular backdrop for the evening, created by our team of volunteer parents. We are also
honoured that the Head of School from UNIS New York and former Heads of School from UNIS Hanoi’s history are

My name is Bryony Rickard and as a Grade 10 student I have to complete a Personal Project. I
wanted to get in contact with UNIS’ Alumni so that our current community could get a better
sense of what our school has been through to become what it is today.
As we are going father and farther back we are getting more and more interesting stories. Some
of these stories are too big to put completely in the Tin Tuc so if there is more stories from a

What do you remember most from your time at UNIS?
Being a part of the UNIS family and watching the school
grow and develop over time.
What were you favourite subjects at school and why?
Music and drama - I had the chance to be creative with
composing music.
Who was your favourite teacher and why?
Grade 2 Mr. Spence was the best teacher! He was so
passionate about teaching and made going to school extremely
fun. I used to want to go to school over the weekend!
How did you get to school every morning?
Bus or motorbike
Who were your best friends and are you still in touch
with them?
I regularly stay in touch with Felice Bakker, I occasionally
contact Sophie Nguyen and Monica Michaan, and sadly I am
not in touch with Allie Uhrig or Laurie Augustin anymore.
How did you and your friends like to spend your free
time?
Riding a motorbike around Hoan Kiem Lake, swimming at
Sedona Suites, going out for meals, and watching movies.
Getting In Touch Project
Time goes by fast but I often think of the time I spent at
UNIS-Hanoi, the teachers, friends, and special "feeling". I
remember my first day at UNIS Hanoi, arriving at the Hanoi-
Amsterdam campus together with my younger brother
(Gustav Dahlberg). None of us spoke English very well so we
were quite nervous and tense about our first day. My
homeroom teacher Ms. Smith made me feel welcome and at
ease and all the class mates made the first day easy by helping
me out. A year or so later, when I was in M1 with Ms.
Thomas, Ms. Smith took me aside in the morning to ask if I
could come by at morning break to help out a new student
and make him feel at home during his first day. This was not
only a natural thing for me to do but also a privilege. This is
just one example of how everyone tried their best to make
new friends and class mates feel at home and at ease, by
helping out and showing respect for one another. We all came
from different backgrounds but came together at UNIS-
Hanoi, a wonderful experience I will carry with me for the
rest of my life. After UNIS I attended several schools, but
none of them measured up to UNIS.

Sweden
Where are you living now and what are you doing (job)?
Malmö, south of Sweden, working as an Analyst in a
Residential Development Company.
What is your favourite memory from UNIS Hanoi?
Too many to mention! But when we had activities such as
Sports Day, UN-Day etc. the school really came together and
involved parents which was great. A special memory was the
soft ball games on Saturdays at the Hanoi Amsterdam fields
with both parents and students.
How did you get to school every morning?
By bike!
How did you and your friends spend your free time?
We used to spend time at the Swedish embassy or in Van
Phuc.
Have you been back to Hanoi since you left?
Yes, several times, the last being in 2007.

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Test
March 5-7 for Grades 3-5 Students
April 23-25 for Grades 6-8 Students
In September UNIS Hanoi students from grades 3-8 took part in the MAP test. The MAP test is an online
standardized test which is completed individually by each student on a computer. These computerized tests in reading,
language usage, and math are called Measures of Academic Progress™ (MAP).
At UNIS Hanoi standardised testing is one method of gathering information to promote and inform student learning. A
standardised test should allow students, teachers and parents to identify a student's strengths and areas of need in the
different subject areas that are tested.
At the school-wide level the standardised test can help to identify areas of the curriculum that may need adapting. It will also
help the school to determine how UNIS Hanoi students are performing in comparison to other students around the world
and evaluate the effectiveness of our program.
The MAP test at UNIS Hanoi is done twice a year so that we can check for growth in student’s development of knowledge
and understanding in the areas tested. This semester students in grades 3-5 will complete the spring MAP test during the days
of March 5-7, 2013. Students in grades 6-8 will be testing in April and more information will be sent out to MS parents closer
to that time. The results of the assessment will be used by classroom teachers to better understand individual student
achievement and future steps for learning. Results will be sent home to parents using a parent report that will be uploaded
onto ISIS.
MAP tests are unique in that as students complete the test it adapts to be appropriate for their level of learning. As a result,
each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.
Please be aware that there is no additional preparation that students can do to prepare for these tests. It is helpful for
students to have a good night’s sleep and a solid breakfast prior to testing. If your child is anxious you can help to alleviate
their worries by talking, listening and reassuring. Encourage your child to simply do their best as he or she would do with any
school assignment, test or project. Contact the homeroom teacher if you have a concern regarding your child’s reaction to
the test.

Health and Safety Awareness - D-12 Parent Info Sessions
The UNIS Hanoi Counseling Department invites you to join us as we present a series of presentations focusing on
health & safety awareness! Speakers from the hanoi community and beyond will present information on helping
promote mental and physical health and safety for our children!
SCHEDULE
March 4 - 1:30-3:00 pm (Library Projection Room) — Session with Dr. Yong Cho, a Clinical Psychologist and CEO
of the Tree Group in Seoul, Korea.
Dr. Cho has experience working with international school students and families both in Korea and throughout the region.
Dr. Cho is completely fluent in both English and Korean and offers services to families in both languages. During this
session he will be talking to Korean parents about how to support their children in English speaking school
environments, the importance of Korean fathers’ involvement in their children’s education, and issues of child
development. This session will be in Korean.
March 5-5:00 PM (Grand Plaza Hotel, 29th Fl. Athens #1) Session for Korean Fathers with Dr. Yong Cho, A
Clinical Psychologist and CEO of the Tree Group in Seoul, Korea. Hosted by the Korean Chamber of Business in
Vietnam, Dr. Cho will give essentials for raising children successfully abroad, within an English speaking environment.
The session will focus on the father’s role in each child’s future, and the importance of the involvement of fathers in
parenting. This session will be in Korean.

HEALTH, NUTRITION AND WELLNESS ADVISORY TASKFORCE
MONTHLY POST – ISSUE 1
Face Time – what does this mean to you and your family? How does your face time affect
your health and wellness?
This year at UNIS Hanoi, a team of parents, teachers, administration and students have joined forces to discuss the health,
nutrition and wellness in our community and what we can do to improve this. We have had 3 meetings so far and have split
into groups to share observations, thoughts and suggestions regarding several areas of relevance; canteen food, sports
facilities and tablet usage in and outside school. In this article, we are concentrating on tablet usage beyond school time and
what this means for our community and the way we think, act and communicate. UNIS Hanoi has made the choice for a 1-2
-1 tablet programme due to many related educational benefits. The 21st century is only moving forward and this progress is
significantly helped by technology. The tablet at UNIS Hanoi is an essential learning tool yet we are in control of how it
impacts our lives outside of lesson and homework time.
Technology is changing the way we live but by how much and to what sacrifice? Do the positives outweigh the negatives or
vice versa. This article is simply to provoke thought and reflect on your own daily actions as a family that possibly relies
heavily on today’s technologies.
As you enter UNIS Hanoi each day, you see faces first. They are in real form. They are smiling, talking, exchanging stories,
welcoming friends and saying goodbye to guardians. They are looking, they are present, and they are living life in real,
present time.
As each day progresses, however, does this face time become different? The faces could change into screens with voices
hidden behind them and eyes could be locked on a type face, locked on web pages, locked on an unreal world. Perhaps the
real world now continues over the internet and through documents and through social networking. Perhaps, however, this is
contorting our view of what real life is to us now. How often are our faces up and not down?
As we live our lives, we are undoubtedly faced with tasks to be completed via our computers. People communicate via e-mail
and create, modify and read documents through a myriad programmes. Whether in class, in a meeting or working on an
assignment, fingers are tapping, eyes are, according to science, fixated on micro-images and brains are interpreting all of this
information. What are the effects on our bodies if we continue this at home as well as school?
Adults will have a more difficult time working on computers than children. The lens of the eye becomes less flexible and
adults start to lose the ability to focus on near or far objects. This is called presbyopia. Our eyes were meant to move around
our environment yet, sitting with a computer, our eyes lock and our posture stiffens. As time goes on and we become
familiar with depending on computers, such things as backache, repetitive strain injuries and even breathing and blood
circulation problems can surface.
While we must admit the positive influences of technology on our lives today, we must not ignore the possibility that we
have become too dependent. We are also perhaps ignoring what our bodies are telling us. Stop and reassess your computer
habits. More importantly, stop and assess how our children are behaving with computer usage. Is it balanced? Is it safe? Is it
limited?
Challenge yourself! Think of things that are not computer assisted. Do these things more! Have a no internet day. Have a no
screen day. Have a proper, old-fashioned face day!
Kindergarten PAC
Congratulations to the Kindergarten students who performed their version of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ on stage this
Wednesday. They did a wonderful job of telling the story and sang and danced with confidence.
A big thank you to the homeroom and specialist teachers, the Centre for the Arts team for making it happen!
Double Success at MRISA
Last weekend the Mekong River International Schools Association (MRISA) held its annual Junior Soccer Tournament here
in Hanoi. The Junior MRISA Soccer Tournament brings together eight Middle School teams of each gender (Grades 6-8)
and is played over a two day period.
The UNIS Hanoi girls came into the tournament as the defending champions and the boys were hopeful that having home
field advantage would see them improving from their 3rd place finish in 2012. Playing in cold and damp conditions on Friday,
both Phoenix teams went undefeated in their 3 round robin matches and finished pool play in 1st place. That meant both
teams would go into the second day of action as the top ranked team, and would play against the second place team in the
semi-final to see who would advance to the championship final.
In stark contrast to Friday, Saturday was sunny and hot, but the change in weather conditions did little to affect the two
UNIS Hanoi teams. The girls defeated Vientiane International School in the semi-final to book a place in the championship
match. Meanwhile, the boys had similar success, getting past a difficult opponent, International School Eastern Seaboard,
from Thailand, to ensure that both finals would feature teams from UNIS Hanoi!
The girls’ championship match saw UNIS Hanoi playing against the International School of Phnom Penh. In what turned
out to be a rather one-sided game, the UNIS Hanoi girls successfully retained their MRISA Junior Championship! The
opponent for the boys was Northbridge International School (also from Phnom Penh). In an exciting final that ended 2-1,
the UNIS Hanoi boys, secured a second MRISA Championship for the school!!
Congratulations go out to both teams and their coaches, as the UNIS Hanoi Middle School teams take home two MRISA 1st
Place trophies!! Well done! GO PHOENIX!!

Middle School Volleyball
The Middle School Volleyball season starts on Tuesday, March 5. All interested students should meet in the Sports Center at
3:40, changed and ready to play. Practices will be Tuesdays/Thursdays from 3:40-5:45. This years MRISA tournament will
be hosted by ISPP (Cambodia). Students should sign-up with the Activities Office.

We Need Help From the School Community!!!
UNIS Hanoi is a busy place! You probably know that already.
It’s great that our students have so many opportunities to get involved in Co-Curricular activities. Throughout the school
year, our students travel to some fantastic events and we in turn also host a fair number of Co-Curricular events. The
majority of these tournaments and festivals depend on the hospitality of the hosting school. Our students stay with host
families when they travel. We value the host family experience as it fosters the development of new relationships and allows
students to be part of another family for a few days. As members of both APAC and MRISA, we as a community have the
opportunity to open our school and homes to visiting guests.
We are currently in the midst of hosting the 5th UNIS Model United Nations Conference, which involves about 140
students. UNIS Hanoi families have graciously opened their homes to provide homestay accommodations for about 85
students who have traveled to Hanoi to participate in this event. Thank you so much!
Before this school year ends, UNIS Hanoi will organize and host two more major sporting events, for which we will need
the assistance of members of the UNIS Hanoi community.
MRISA Senior Soccer (April 4-7) will bring about 120 High School boys and girls to our campus for 3 days and nights.
APAC Girls Soccer (April 17-21) will see 85 visiting High School girls visiting UNIS Hanoi for 4 nights.
We are very excited to be hosting these two tournaments. Although they are only 2 weeks apart, they will bring a lot of
excitement and energy to our campus. It will require a considerable contribution from UNIS Hanoi families in order for our
school to successfully host both of these tournaments. If you feel that you could open your home to some of our visitors
that would be fantastic. Generally, we try to keep students together in pairs, but if you only have room for only one or
perhaps you have room for more than two, we can make things work.

Bangarra Dance
On Thursday February 28, the Bangarra Indigenous Dance troupe from Australia did a workshop with professional dancers
from the Hanoi Youth Theatre. We were very privileged to have both of these groups coming to UNIS Hanoi. This was a
wonderful experience displaying a blending of cultures and contemporary dance.

Aquathlon

“On February 23 many swimmers and runners gathered together to participate in
the successful Aquathlon. This is the 3rd time UNIS Hanoi has sponsored this event
and I hope that there will be more to come! The Aquathlon is an exciting event that
includes a hundred participants, competing in six categories: the Long Course and
Short Course both of which can be done individually, in student teams, or even in
family teams. For the Long Course, participants must do 300m swimming and
2250m running on a marvelous track set up for the event. The Short Course is 200m
swimming and 1500m running. The whole UNIS swim team has been training for
this event from before the winter break. It wasn't easy, but it definitely helped us
improve from our last time doing the Aquathlon.
“As I arrived on the day I could see the brightly marked cones showing where the
track was. I saw participants of every age with the youngest only 6 years old to the
oldest- a grandfather of one student. People gathered around the marking area
where volunteers wrote a number on each participant. I know that as the
competition came nearer, everyone felt the pressure building up, and the heat of the
sun added to that pressure. As the first participant jumped in the water, and the
whistle blew, the next participant would jump in and so on until the last participant.
Running on land was a really hard part of the course and where people could catch
up to others. However I do truly believe that once that participant crossed that
finish line, nothing mattered. I felt like I was invincible when I heard my time, but it
is best to keep walking because if you stop you would get a massive headache like
the one I got. After the incredible experience everybody that showed up, even the
parents, got to eat carrot cake. Ms. Ella loves us eating healthy! If the parents got
lucky they might even have gotten a sausage!
“It's funny when I think back to the time when the first participants complained
about having to go first and the last participants complaining about having to go
last, because really we all had to do it anyway. Personally I've done all three Aquathlons and I have to admit everything was
organized down to the very last minute, and I bet that the Aquathlon will be just as amazing next year. The Aquathlon is an
opportunity to show what you got, and teaches you to push harder and harder every time you go to a competition or a race.
“I would like to thank our coaches, swimming and fitness coach for all the hard work they have put us through because I
know that without that none of us would be able to accomplish so much on that one special and tiring day. I personally
would - also like to congratulate everyone, especially the brave individuals who gave it their all and did an excellent
performance of showing up, getting ready and actually doing the event!”
