p HUDDLE UPS (OPT IONAL)

Huddle ups are for churches that have a drop-off time before the session begins. There are multiple ideas for interaction during this time, such as simple games that children can play on the floor or within whatever arrangements you gather your kids. Leaders can ask “get-to-know-you” questions after welcoming kids into their groups.

(Print the following for your small group leaders.)

What Do You See?

Play a game that is similar to “I Spy.” Toss a beanbag around a circle (or roll a ball for younger kids). When the beanbag gets to them, they will point out one thing they see in the room. Be sure that eventually the kids are pointing out things that they see about the people around them, not just the objects in the room. Today we will hear that God doesn’t see exactly like we see!

Color “David Played Music” Coloring Sheets

• Tell preschoolers that today they will learn about a boy who took care of his father’s sheep and played music.

• Distribute coloring supplies and coloring sheets to the preschoolers. Allow them to color on their pages while they wait for the session to begin.

• If the kids prefer to use blank paper, they can color on the back of the page.

Speaking of prayer, why don’t WE pray together right now? (bows head to pray) “Dear God, thank You for hearing our prayers. Help us to learn more about You as we worship today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.” NOW, I’m ready to get this show started! (speaks into headset) PLACES, everyone! (runs offstage)

p CONNECT ION PO INT GAME

c Estimated time: 5-10 minutes

t Tech: Connection Point slide, Connection Point theme music

p People: Host, everyone

h Props: multiple copies of “telephone” phrases printed out for leaders

Game Instructions:

Form small groups of kids with a leader in each group. Invite each group to form a circle and be seated. Whisper one of the phrases shown below into one child’s ear. Ask that child to whisper the same phrase into the ear of the child to his or her left, and continue around the circle until the last child is told the phrase. Encourage the last child to say what he or she heard out loud to see how close it was to the original phrase.

“Telephone” phrases:

• God will always hear our prayers.

• It makes Jesus very happy when we pray.

• People should pray to God.

• I pray to God and He hears me.

Host

(Play Connection Point theme music and show Connection Point slide.) (Enter after theme music plays.) Hi, everyone! Welcome to Connection Point!

Today we’re playing The Telephone Game. First, I need you to sit in a circle with your friends. (Give leaders time to organize groups of kids and seat them in circles.) Good job! When I say “Go,” your leader will whisper a phrase into someone’s ear. That person will whisper what they heard to the friend next to them and each friend will keep whispering the phrase around the circle until it comes to the last person. The last friend will tell the whole circle what they heard out loud. Let’s see if the phrase stayed the same or if it changed a little bit. Are you ready? Go!

(Play the game as time allows.)

Was that a funny game? Did the phrases stay the same around the circle? Well, even though it was hard to keep all the words the same, you did a great job! Now let’s all find our seats.

(Theme music/slide to transition. Host leads into next segment.)

(Play the Bible Story video or tell the following Bible story.)

STORYTELLER

(Show Bible Story slide.) Hi, friends! I can’t wait to share God’s Word with you today! What do we call God’s Word? (Allow kids to respond.) The Bible! Good! Is the Bible the true Word of God? (Allow kids to respond.) Yes! Let’s put our hands in our laps and close our mouths so we can hear this true Word together!

Last week we talked about David and Jonathan. They were great friends, but David had to run away when King Saul became angry with him. This week we are going to learn more about David and what he did for King Saul before he had to run away.

David was a shepherd boy who loved God. He took care of his father’s sheep. (Lead all kids to make the sound a sheep makes.) He played music on his harp and sang songs, too. (Show a picture of a harp.) Can you pretend to play a harp with me? (Pretend to play a harp.) David wrote a song about God.

(Open your Bible to Psalm 23:1 and read.) The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.

David knew that he would be the next king. Samuel had poured oil on David’s head because God had told Samuel that David would be king when King Saul died. But, until then, he was a shepherd. (Lead kids to make the sheep sounds again.)

King Saul was an unhappy king. Often he was upset. His helpers said, “We can find someone who plays music on the harp. When you are feeling upset, the music could help you feel better.” King Saul thought it was a good idea.

“David knows how to play the harp,” a man said. “He is a brave man, too.”

Saul sent men to get David. David began to help the king. He played music to worship God and he also played music for King Saul. Saul was feeling very upset but when David played his harp the king felt happy again. David lived in the palace so he could serve the king by playing music for him.

(Show Christ Focus slide.)

(Point to the group of kids seated toward your right. Say: “When I point to you, I want you to make the sheep sound once more.” Point to the group of kids seated toward your left. Say: “When I point to you, I want you to pretend to put a crown on your head.”)

David was a shepherd boy (Point to the kids who will make the sheep sound, pausing long enough for them to make the sound.) but when God looked at him, He saw a king (Point to the kids who will pretend to put a crown on their heads.). David loved and obeyed God with all his heart and God could see that. God had big plans for David. Not only would David get to be king someday, but God would use David’s family to bring another Shepherd into the world. Jesus is our Good Shepherd who hears all our prayers.

God, thank You that You hear our prayers. Help us to remember that we can pray to You every day. Thank You for our Good Shepherd, Jesus. We love You. Amen.

(Show Session Title slide.) David played music as a prayer to God. Isn’t it amazing that God hears our prayers? (Allow kids to respond.) We can talk to God anytime, anywhere, about anything! God is always listening. (Show Life Point slide.) People should pray to God. Let’s say that one more time so we don’t forget it. People should pray to God.

Optional Giving Segment: We worship God by hearing His Words in the Bible, singing songs to Him, and praying to God together. Another way that we can worship God is by bringing an offering to give to Him. When we give our money to God, we show Him that we love Him and that we want to honor Him. If you’d like to give to God today, …

(Give your own directions for how the kids can give to God. Perhaps you have buckets in the back of the room, a chest up front, or an envelope that each small group leader passes.)

Do you think David sat in the field with the sheep and the goats and thought, One day I’m going to be the king! No, probably not. But, David may have spent many hours praying to God as he watched after his animals. Praying is something that all of us can do! We don’t have to be at church for God to hear our prayers. We can pray to God anywhere … at school, during practice, in the car, or at home. This week, remember to tell God about your day and how much you love Him. And be ready to listen to Him.

Be sure to grab the One Conversation® page on your way out. It will help you talk with your family about what you’ve learned. Can’t wait to see you next week!

p HUDDLE UPS (OPT IONAL)

This time is designed for churches that have a pick-up time from a large room as parents arrive. It’s a great time for follow-up conversations and questions from small group leaders about the session’s content. You also can use the missions emphasis (below).

(Print the following for your small group leaders.)

• Why did David play his harp? Why did he sings songs? (to worship God; to pray and talk to God)

• How did David help King Saul feel better? (He played his harp for him.)

• What are some things that make you feel better when you’re sad? (Answers will vary.)

• What are some things you can say to God when you pray? (Answers will vary.)

MISS IONS EMPHASIS (OPTIONAL)

• Prior to the session, gather a world map or globe for each small group.

• Tell the missions story, “Who Are the Bedia?” Talk about how the church in Arkansas is helping the Bedia people group.

• If you gathered a world map or globe, invite kids to help locate Arkansas and India.

• Remind kids that when First Baptist Church began praying for the Bedia, they had never met them! The church prayed for five years before making the long trip to India.

Missions Story: Who Are the Bedia?

This is a story about how God brought together two groups of people from opposite sides of the world! It all began when First Baptist Church of Centerton, Arkansas learned about a people group in India called the Bedia. The Bedia had never heard about Jesus. Most of the Bedia are Hindu, which means they worship many gods. The church wanted to help, so they began to pray.

After many years of praying, the church saved enough money to make the long flight to India. When they arrived, they saw small, busy villages. The Bedia ride their bikes or drink tea in little shops. Others carry water from the well to use at home. Kitchens are usually nothing more than a small pot and a fire.

But, the church saw something else, too! They saw many people choosing to follow Jesus and being baptized. The church thought there were no Christians there, but God had answered their prayers!

Mandahar (MAHN-dah-har) is a new believer in Christ. He is a rice farmer. A few years ago, Mandahar was very sick, and no one could help him. Finally, a group of pastors came to the village and began to pray for Mandahar. God heard their prayers, and Mandahar was healed! God has changed Mandahar’s life.

Although there are now some Christians among the Bedia, it still is not easy. Pushba (PUSH-bah) believed in Jesus, but her father did not. He got very angry at her and would not allow her to stay in her home with her family. Pushba, her mother, and her older brother were some of the first Christians in her village. Pushba is praying for a church to be built near her village. She also is praying for the people in her village to understand the love God has for them and that they would not be hurt for believing in Jesus.

First Baptist Church continues to pray for the Bedia. They keep photographs of the Bedia hanging in their church to remind them to pray for the new believers and the people who still need to know about Jesus.
