How to Read a Credit Line• The ‘credit line’ appears near an artwork and

is text that contains vital information about an artwork like the artist name, title, year, etc.

• Often the first text

• Appears in italics.

• BCE—Before Common Era (Ex: 23,000 BCE)• CE—Common Era (aka AD) (Ex: 437CE)• c. or ca. (lower case letters)—Stands for ’Circa’

which means “approximately” or “around”• Examples: c1900 or ca. 430
