meaning as you work with classmates to determine word meanings and annotate important ideas in a text.

• Looking at the half-sheet you receive, make some inferences about the photograph.

• Your copy of “The Vietnam Wars” (you will take notes on the article and need to keep it in your classwork folder).

• A pen or pencil

• A willingness to “get the gist” of a difficult informational text.

You’ll receive poems and questions later on in the class.

Today we continue looking at some of the historical background that helps you to understand how Ha’s life is affected by the time and place in which her story is set.

Section 1

Can someone state the main idea of “The Chinese Dragon”?

For centuries China tried to rule Vietnam, and the Vietnamese fought back.

Reading for the Gist

Now we’re going to do a quick reading of sections 2-4 for just the gist. Since we are only going to do a single reading of these sections, please mark your text for anything you feel is important.

Also: mark any section where you feel you can see what the attitude of the Vietnamese is toward the other nations that occupy their land.

Section 2 Summary

The French invaded Vietnam in 1857 and tried for years to control the country.

Section 3 Summary

Ho Chi Minh fought for Communism and Vietnamese independence.

Section 4 Summary

Ho Chi Minh, supported by China, finally wore the French down and they left in 1954.

Section 5:“Doc-Lap at Last”

For this section, we’re going to do a close-read.

Why?

• It gets to the period in history that is covered in “Inside Out & Back Again.”

• You need to understand what is going on during “The Vietnam War.”

• The test that you will take on Friday/Monday includes informational text on this part of Vietnam’s history.

Follow along in the text as we read “Doc-Lap at Last” aloud.

Focus on “getting the gist.”

Now we’ll re-read the section, and as we do, we will practice

annotating the text.

What does “annotate” mean?

What do you do when you annotate?

1. What words does the author use to describe the Viet Cong? What do these words show about the author’s attitude toward the rebels?

2. Based on what you learned about Tet from earlier in the novel, what do you believe was the impact of the Tet Offensive on the Vietnamese people?

3. How did the Vietnamese people likely feel when the Americans left in 1973? Collect specific evidence from across the text “The Vietnam Wars” to support your answer.

Now that you have annotated the article, work with your group to

make some inferences about Vietnam.

Back to the novel . . .

As we CLOSE READ some more selections from the novel, keep in your mind the information we have learned about regarding the wars that have gone on in Vietnam for centuries.
