Unit 1-Number Sets
Aa-1.1 Define and identify integers, rational, irrational, natural, whole
and real numbers.
1-1 Properties of Real Numbers
Real Numbers – are all Rational and Irrational Numbers. There are 5 subsets of real numbers
Natural Numbers – are the numbers used for counting. 1,2,3,4,…………….
Whole Numbers – are the natural numbers and 0. 0,1,2,3,4,………
Subsets of Real Numbers
Integers – are the natural numbers, also called the positive integers, and their opposites, also called the negative integers and zero. …-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4,…….
Subsets of Real Numbers
Rational Numbers- ⅞,¼,0.5,1.2 Can be written as a fraction a / b where both a
and b are integers and b is not 0. Rational numbers can also be written as either
terminating or recurring decimal fractions. Recurring decimal is a fraction which repeats itself
forever. Terminating decimal is a fraction ends after a definite
number of digits.
Subsets of Real Numbers
Irrational Numbers -√2,√3,√⅜,∏, cannot be written in the form of a fraction where the
numerator and denominator are both integers, whole numbers.
The square root of any prime number is irrational. pi, the ratio between the circumference and diameter
of a circle, is irrational. Numbers which can only be written as a never-ending,
non-repeating decimal fraction.
