Unit 1 Rules of the Road

Drivers License Exams

When applying for a driver’s license, you may be required to take vision, written, and driving exams.

You are allowed 3 attempts to each of these exams within 1 year from the date you paid your application fee.

Vision Screening

Minimum visual acuity of 20/40 with or without corrective lenses

140 degrees of peripheral vision

If you wear glasses or contacts you must always wear them while operating a vehicle. Noted on your license

Written Exam

The basic exam requires you to:

1. Identify traffic signs by shape, color, or symbol.

2. Identify signals and pavement markings

3. Answer multiple choice and true/false questions about traffic laws, safety rules, crash prevention and vehicle equipment

Driving Exam

Graded on: Driving skills Vehicle skills Backing vehicle up Turnabouts Parking on a hill Obey all traffic signs,

control devices, right-of-way, lane markings, and proper use of turn signals

Cheating and Bribery

Any student suspected of cheating or suspicious behavior will be warned once

After warning, student will fail test and be prohibited from retesting for 30 days

Chapter 3Graduated Drivers Licensing Program

Rules of the Road

Initial Licensing Phase for Drivers Age 16-17 - Restrictions

A. Restrictions1. You must have 50 hours of practice

driving with someone over age of 212. For first 12 months following the

issuance of a license the number of passengers is limited to 1 person under the age of 20 unless the additional passenger is a sibling or child.

3. All occupants under the age of 19 must wear safety belts.

4. After the first 12 months, the number of passengers is limited to 1 in the front seat and to the number of seatbelts in the back seat

5. 10:00 pm curfew Sunday – Thursday and 11:00 pm Friday and Saturday

6. Legal blood alcohol content is 0.00

7. Use of cell phone under age of 19 is prohibited while driving unless it is an emergency.

8. A traffic conviction during the initial licensing phase (16 and 17 years) may extend restrictions beyond age 18.

9. Any student who drops out of school before the age of 18 or is a “truant” can have his/her license taken away by the school district in which he/she attends.

***Truancy: absent on own free will or are enrolled in school but don’t go to class.

Note: Anyone caught driving without a valid permit will be ineligible to obtain a drivers license until they are 18

Initial Licensing Phase for Drivers Age 16-17 - Penalties

1. To obtain court supervision, a driver must appear in court with a parent/legal guardian and must also attend a traffic safety school. Limit one court supervision for serious driving offenses

2. The conviction of any moving violation before age 18 results in a warning letter sent to parents and teen

3. A moving violation conviction that occurs within the first year of licensing will result in a 6 month extension of the passenger limitation, which allows only one unrelated passenger under the age of 20.

4. Conviction of 2 moving violations in a 24 month period results in a minimum 1 month suspension.

5. A suspended driver is required to attend a remedial driver education course, pay a $70 reinstatement fee and be retested

Parental Consent

A. Drivers age 16 and 17 must have parental/legal guardian consent to obtain a drivers license

B. Parents/legal guardians may withdraw your license for any reason until you turn 18

C. Parents/legal guardian may access your driving record at any time.
