said,“Ifeltfunnykissingaguy.”Behindthatletterisastatistic:“Tenpercentofthechildreninthiscountryliveinfatherlesshomes.”
Thereisalsoaquotefromanovelaboutthechildrenofthesixties,writtenbyStephenKoch.Itsays,“Whoamongthosefierysons,withtheirvagueandblastedeyes,reallyconnectedwithhisfather;whoevenknew,letaloneadmired,whatthefatherdidinthatinvisible city ofhis? Therearesomanyyoungfatherswhodon’twanttobeliketheirowndads.Theyfeelawkwardwhentheyfindthemselvesalonewiththeirfatherstoday.Theyflipthroughtheirownmentalfilesonthesubject.ThereisFatherKnowsBestandFatherKnowsNothing,FatherasPal,andFatherasTrans-parent.Thereisevenanoccasionalfull-timefather—whotripsinallthepitfallsoffull-timemothers.

Theyarelearningtodealwithkidswhentheyarecryingoraredirtyorhungry.Asonefathersaid,“WhenIwasakid,myfatherwouldplayballwithme,buttheminuteIhurtmyknee,we’dbothcallformymother.”
Hewantsthekindofrelationshipthatisonlywovenintheintimacyofdaily,
time-consumingroutinesduring whichyou “learn”whattheycallintuition—thesecondsensethattellsyouonekidisworriedandanotherissad,andthedifferencebetweenacrythatistiredandonethatishungryorhurt.Thesefathersdon’twanttobeSundayevents.
Ontheotherhand,theyhavenewguilts.Theyfeelguiltyiftheymisstheschoolplayandguiltyiftheyaretiredoroutoftown.Theycan’tpushitdownjustifyingtheirabsencewiththeneedtoMakeIt,orwiththenotionthatchildrenarewomen’swork.
