Theyarelearningtodealwithkidswhentheyarecryingoraredirtyorhungry.Asonefathersaid,“WhenIwasakid,myfatherwouldplayballwithme,buttheminuteIhurtmyknee,we’dbothcallformymother.”

Hewantsthekindofrelationshipthatisonlywovenintheintimacyofdaily,

time-consumingroutinesduring whichyou “learn”whattheycallintuition—thesecondsensethattellsyouonekidisworriedandanotherissad,andthedifferencebetweenacrythatistiredandonethatishungryorhurt.Thesefathersdon’twanttobeSundayevents.

Inasense,everythingIhaveeverwrittenhasbeenforhim,towinhisapprovaleventhoughmyfather’sonlyreadingincludesthebrown-inkEstosportsmagazinesfromMexicoCityandthebloodyAlarma! thatfeaturesyetanothersightingofLaVirgendeGuadalupeonatortilla.Orthefotonovelas,thelittlepicturepaperbackswithtragedyandtraumaeruptingfromthecharacters’mouthsinbubbles.

Myfatherrepresents,then,thepublicmajority.ApublicwhoisdisinterestedinreadingandyetonewhomIamwritingaboutandfor,andprivatelytryingtowoo.
