Why do people have yard sales?

In the US, when people want to get rid of their junk for a little cash, they have yard sales. They put a sign up in their yard, maybe place an ad in the newspaper or on the Internet and sell things they no longer use. Often people have yard sales when they are getting ready to move from one place to another.Sometimes, you can find good stuff at yard sales at a good price. People sell everything from clothes, dishes and books to CDs, furniture and art.

What is a yard sale?

Look at the things at the yard sale. Do you have any of these things at home? How long have you had them?

Mom: Let’s look through this box of old things and decide what to give away. Amy: I think I want to keep this book. I’ve had it for three years. Even though I’ve already read it twice, it’s still my favorite book. But we can give away the magazine.Mom: What about these soft toys?Amy: I want to keep the bear because I’ve had it since I was a baby. It has special meaning for me because Grandma gave it to me. I’ll give away the lion and tiger.

Mom: OK. And this old bread maker of mine can go, too. I’ve had it for more than 10 years. Aunt Taylor bought a new one for me last week. Amy: That’s great. We can still have homemade bread. And I can give away this sweater and dress, too. They don’t fit me anymore. But I want to keep the hat and scarf for ice skating. Mom: Great. You can take these things to the children’s home tomorrow then.

Role-play the conversation in 2d with a partner.

1.over the years: 在过去这些年也可以表达为 in the past years.e.g. 在过年这些年，他们帮助了很多学生。They have helped many students over the years.

2. We don’t use them anymore.我们不再使用他们了。 not … anymore / not … any longer: 不再e.g. 他不会再在那里工作了。He won’t work there anymore.

3. There are many things I’ve had since I was a child. 有很多自从我小时候就已经有了的东西。 since: conj. 自从e.g. 这个座桥 10 年前就在这里了。The bridge has been here since 10 years ago.

4. I don’t think I could sell them. 我认为我卖不掉他们。I don’t think … （否定前移）I think/believe/suppose/imagine 等动词后的宾语从句的否定词要前移到主句中。e.g. 我想我不认识你I don’t think I know you. 我相信他不会来。I don’t believe he will come.

5. It’s hard to say goodbye to certain things.对某些东西道别是很难的事情。It is + adj. + to do sth 做某事很 …… say goodbye to sb 对某人道别 say sorry to sb 对某人道歉 say thanks to sb 对某人道谢e.g. 我认为跟他道歉不是很难的事情。I don’t think it is hard to say sorry to him.

6. By the way 顺便问一句 in this way 就这样 on the way to someplace 在去某地的路上e.g. 顺便问一句，那个玩具多少钱？By the way, how much is that toy?就这样，他按时到达了学校。In this way, he arrived at the school on time.在去博物馆的路上，他丢了钱包。He lost his wallet on the way to the museum.

7. I have had it for three years. 我已经拥有了它 3 年了。终止性动词表示的动作极其短暂，不能持续，所以，在现在完成时中一般不能和以 since ， for等引导的表示一段时间的状语连用。 get, buy 在这种情况下用 have 代替。e.g. 我三年前买了这本杂志。I bought the magazine three years ago. I have had the magazine for three years.

8. I learned how to ride a bike on it. 我用它学会了如何骑自行车。 how to ride （疑问词 + 动词不定式 作宾语）e.g. 你能告诉我如何开车么？Can you tell me how to drive a car?他不知道要怎么办。He doesn’t know what to do.

9. Old things really bring back sweet memories. 老东西真的能带回美好的记忆。 remember: v. 记得 memory: n. 记忆 e.g. 他有很好记忆力。 He has a good memory .

10. It’s true that we may never use some of these things again.确实，有些东西我们不会再用了。It’s true that … it 为形式主语， that 引导主语从句我确实没有对他撒谎。It’s true that I didn’t lie to him.

11. You can also give them away to kids or people who need them.你可以把他们送给孩子们或者需要他们的人。 give away: 赠送e.g. 我想把这些食物送给那些老人。I want to give the food to the old men. people who need them 需要他们的人 who 引导定语从句， 修饰 peoplee.g. 你认识那个给你这些钱的人么？Do you know the man who gave you the money?

4. They don’t fit me anymore. 他们不再适合我了。 fit ： v. 适合 e.g. 这鞋子不合我的脚。The shoes don’t fit me. not … anymore: 不再e.g. 我不会再穿这条裙子了。I won’t wear the dress anymore.老师不再生我们的气了。The teacher isn’t angry with us anymore.
